@@fuchila2point0 Plenty of people just got into the book because of MCDM streaming this game. Someone in the chat during the stream had this spoiled for them by Matt, as did I.
@@drodjenkins I tried watching the movie - the one with Sting. I got about 30 minutes in and I just did not get it at all. Seems like I will have to try the book
@@bunnythekid The book is really good paired with lore vids about the world. I have ADHD so reading is an endeavor for me, but surrounding myself with Dune stuff got me hyped up for the book and now I'm hooked.
D-rod Jenkins I recently got diagnosed myself, at the tender age of 28! Reading can be difficult for me too, so I might look into getting an audiobook. I’d recommend you try it too. I listened to all of the available game of thrones books recently - something I doubt I could have ever read.
First of all, I love watching these! Please, be aware that when you choose to dismiss the 'pay to count full force' rule, you actually alter the balance of the game quite significantly: - The Fremen's advantage of not having to pay is there to counteract the fact that they're very poor. - The Bene Gesserit rely more on the use of their powerful leaders combined with the Voice ability, rather than the sheer number of troops. Not paying spice to make forces count full strength makes BG significantly weaker. - The Emperor's Sardaukar are much more cost-efficient than regular forces for the same cost. - It's much harder to guess what your opponent is going to choose on the wheel, if they have to pay for it as well. The rule is very thematic: a small number of well supplied troops may be able to match a large force of undersupplied ones, you make killing leaders all the more important, you make the Fremen's mastery of the environment apparent, and you add another layer of mind games. Also: - Bene Gesserit start with one advisor in any territory, apart from the warrior in the Polar Sink. - The number of players allowed to have forces in a given territory is only limited to two if the territory is a stronghold.
It's extremely difficult for the Fremen to win with the rule set that they're playing, and extremely easy for the Guild to win. And lo and behold, that's exactly what has been happening.
100% agree! We always play with all the advanced rules (including spice-supported combat); the complexity of spice-combat is greatly exaggerated, imo, and worth the table figuring out so that the Fremen player can have a chance. What's most confusing to me, though, is why they are playing with double spice blows if they're dropping spice combat.
yep. While their games are fun to watch, they are terribly unbalanced. And i disagree with the sentiment "playing with a weak side is good because winning is more rewarding". I really like assymetrical games, but this is no reason to not have at least close winning percentages. Id say the gf9 ruleset does help to balance the factions.
Perfect, thanks Matt and the crew. We were all waiting for the 4th installment of Dune with y'all. Bravo. We had a fantastic game at my home last week and I won as the bene because of guessing Paul would win on round 8. Fantastic twist. He thought he had it. 4 hour game and a blast.
Dune is not a long game. What usually takes up time is the auction and people who think too long during combat wheel configuration. If you play with people who know the game, it usually don't take more than two hours. Most of our games are won in round 4-6. It does not add musch time if it lasts to round 10, because then multiple players did someting wrong, and has very little to do. Making the turns much faster.
I love when yall play dune. I can play codenames or Whitehall with friends... but getting 5 other people to commit to learning how to play a game this complex hasn't happened for me yet. I truly am indebt to you guys. I really didn't understand this game when it popped up on my radar and when I watched a review of it, it just seemed like a jumbled mess that was hard to understand. Soon after in early November I saw your first installment of Dune and was like holy crap this game seems amazing. Got my copy, have played two 6 player games since and it is my all time favorite game. Thank you so much for uploading these because they are so entertaining along with everything else. I was able to catch this one on stream but wow what a game this 4th round of it was, I'm also a third of the way through the book now too!
Exactly this. I saw a few reviews and really just wrote this game off. it seemed incredibly fiddly and unnecessary complicated. But after these videos I have preordered myself a copy. Did a really good job of convincing me that it is manageable if everybody is into it and kind of gets their powers.
I watched the SUSD review and thought, meh its ok I guess, but watching this I am totally sold on the game. sadly I do not have enough friends willing to give up 3-4 hrs for a game. We normally play Battle for Rokugan. Not as thematic but a great game nonetheless.
Thank you all, because so much passion you put in the setting and those gameplay, I've returned after a long time to audiobook, and also compulsively bought the 2019 version - we've played one game so far and it was a blast, I knew I'd love this game watching you, but now I have 5 more people loving it as much as I do. Also in first game I lost as Bene Gesserit only because I predicted win by Harkonnens on turn 7 and they were 1 men short of winning the game (I even was able to stop the storm after Family Atomics to make sure they'd win)
YESSSSSS I watched your guys first 3 games, and immediatly got it for myself. I created 200 small "spice" vials with mica powder and played a few rounds with friends. Keep it up!!!

These videos are how I found your channel and I absolutely love them. I love watching you play and I like that you guys know the game well enough that you can play quickly. I don’t like the changes you made to bidding this time around as much. But you guys are awesome. Keep kicking ass.
wish there were more Dune gameplay videos! the first four convinced me to pick up the game myself, my gaming group and i have had a blast every time we've played it
Hopefully they start doing these again. If they do, they should do what TotalBiscuit did and add a 5-30 minute “anti-spoiler” at the end so you don’t know exactly when it will end. Not needed for games that end at turn 7 (or other games that end at specified point)
The issue with the alternate bidding, it shouldn't be the first player each time, it should be the first bidder that gets priority. Game as so few turns, it gives massive advantage to whoever is first, they just need to equal best bid, never exceed it. First bidder moving around the table counters that, each player have a chance to be first for each bidding.
Another alternative idea would be to have a 2nd (or 3rd, 4th, etc.) round of blind bidding, just between the tied players. This would be how much they want to ADD to their initial bid. This would probably not take that much longer and would help avoid the issue of turn-order priority advantage.
Or, you could have everyone put in the maximum they are willing to spend, at the start. Then have the winner only pay the 2nd highest bid +1 (not all that they put in). This might work out to a similar spend as if bidding is done like normal.
I'd recommend a Vickrey auction in the future, where the winner pays the second-highest bid. It incentivizes bidding your true value, and is equivalent to an English auction (almost what you were doing before) while this bidding system is not. It really is just a speedy version of the normal bidding system. Essentially, the winner only has to pay just enough to beat the second-highest bid. You can do second-highest bid plus one for exact equivalence.
Looks like Zach(Atreides) looked at each treachery card(6 total) before bidding began on the first treachery card began(1st round). Unless I am mistaken, Atreides should only be able to look at the current treachery card up for bid. Which they explained later in the vid...lol
I think I prefer betting on Treachery Cards one by one rather than the simultaneous reveals, it takes longer but gives more opportunity for mind games and driving the price up.
I just want to thank you all. I am a Dune fan but never knew about the game. Your videos pushed me to buy the GF9 remake: I do not regret it one bit. One of the best experiences ever. Kudos to all of you! ps: I love being my group Spiritual Advisor. :D
Been roping my friends into playing Dune with me for the last few weeks, and it's every bit as amazing as it is to watch. Just last game we had double traitor, blown up shieldwall and lazgun shield explosion all within first three rounds. And doubly thank you for introducing me to a world I've been lost in since I watched the first round of this mess.
Hello. It's funny you should say: "There's no way to say the imperial bassin is safe from the sand storm"...because it's the one thing they did in this edition. If you look, desert zones have a normal, single line border. Mountains and safe zones have a double line border. Arrakeen, Cartagh and the zone protected by the wall have a double line border but the second line is dotted to denote that it's not "permanent". My mind got (spice) blown by this piece of UI :)
Mooooore Dune!! I just played my first game of it and you guys are the reason why I went and got it in the first place. Won as the Benes btw, but with brutal force :D
The advanced rule that requires supporting your troops in combat is bothersome, but not using it puts the Fremen at a significant disadvantage within the context of the advanced rules, since they are the exception to that rule, always fighting at full strength. This way you're nerfing the Fremen quite severely, you should homebrew together some bonus for them to offset that. The same-time reveal for the bidding phase is much better than the normal way !
You are the prophet sent to us by Shai Hulud! All of you. :) Been a huge Dune fan for years. I never knew this existed until I just binged it a week ago. Thank you!
I've really enjoyed watching your MCDM Plays Dune series. It's a great game, but it's a challenge for me to get 6 players together, so this is a great substitute for actually playing! I would love to see you play another game using some of the factions from the expansions.
I really hope you guys are getting through 2020 without taking too much damage and I look forward to once more see all of you play Dune again, since your videos are the best in terms of quality and entertainment!
I know it's hard to get together with all the shit that's happening right now, but this is GOOD UA-cam!!! Colville & Co. Are just great people! And Dune is my favorite game, so it's a win/win.
alternate bidding is a good idea. Here's a proposal on how to incorporate the Atreides "ability" to drive the prize on useless cards: let them reveal how much they're willing to pay first and then let all others choose their prize and reveal those at the same time.
I SAW THIS AND WENT KULL WAHAD I FINISHED THE BOOK AGAIN TODAY FOR THE FIFTH TIME BLESS THE MAKER FOR THIS. I'm rather excited. Can't wait to watch it. Hope you guys play even more :D
I think the alt bidding you're after is. 1. Eligible bidders willing to pay 1 put hand up (or other clear signal) 2. Keep hand up if willing to lay 2 3. Repeat 2 until a winner of bid (only 1 person goes to next price) or everyone left dropped out 4. If it was a tie, roll a die or whatever to chose at random between tied players.
Played it a week ago. What's your opinion? From my expirience: Tleilaxu are too rich and as a result too strong, while Ixians are too weak because their total combat strength can be only 20,5 but suboids were not meant for combat usage so total strengh goes down to only 14 which is absolutely nothing. Also they break the game with everyone starting with 2 cards that's why guild or other late game factions get enough treachery to rush from the first turn. And in 6 player game it becomes a real problem to watch not 5 but 7! victory points and prevent only 3 of them beeing controled by somebody. New cards are amazing though, especially poison tooth.
@@HeadHunterFett Super late reply but I finally got to play! I agree with you, but have one caveat. When playing with six players; I keep the Tleilaxu and ditch the Bene Gesserit. IMO the Bene Gesserit & the Ixians are too weak to play. So I leave them out unless someone at the table wants to try them.
Another great game. Don't really like the new bidding method that was used at all as bidding is one of my favorite parts of the Dune game, but hey man, each table to their own! Loving watching through these games.
I love these playthroughs, i was really hoping you guys would do another one. I like the once a month idea, I'll be watching each one. Keep up the amazing work!
Oh My God, THANK YOU SO MUCH. I thought you guys stopped doing this series. Btw, how do u think the strength of Fremen is without the advanced battle rule (Since they don't have to pay for full strength)
I've thought the same. I am considering making the Freeman able to double their troop strength, which is essentially the advantage they have. But probably limit them to three spice.
@@lukehanson_ I'm thinking about this: if in a battle against Fremen with their star force present, fremen's opponent must play like the advanced rule (pay for full strength) this will work in conjunction with only single spice blow to make game clean.
@@muchendai1361 that's an interesting idea. But I think the double spice is important to help basically all other factors keep up with the Guild and Emperor's economy, it also makes more of the game happen outside the strongholds. So I personally would want to keep that. I also would avoid that adjustment because you will have to explain how half strength battles work, I'm just very opposed to dialing half numbers on battle wheels.
It's actually just flying down. The world of Dune has no sense of Star Trek style transporters. It just seems easier to understand when describing the rules to newer players.
I can see how playing with the Teleilaxu would make things more complex. If both sides lose lots of troops they can make out like bandits and then throw their own guys in bum rushes because they can use the money they just got to bring outer people's armies back and bring their own back making a battle of attrition.
Just played my first game with 3 other friends who hadn't even heard about the Dune universe and it was really fun, looking forward to bring in another two friends and play a proper game.
Watching the first three episodes inspired me to buy the first Dune book, which I promptly finished in 4 days. Absolutely amazing book; thanks for the inspiration!
You need to do videos of Dune again, I love those 4 games that you've made. Sorry for my english I'm a fan from France, I hope that you'll find time to play this game again and to film it.
I reading Dune Messiah now and I bought the Dune board game because of your Dune videos. House attreides is my favourite because even in the worst case scenario where your army at Arakeen is shield-lasgun exploded, you just ally with Fremen or Spacing guild, take 3 revives a turn and crush the enemy with Kwisatz Haderach.
Also your ruleset is what my friends and I use and if we had to pay spice to have our troops fight properly, the game would be gathering dust on my shelf.
I have thoroughly enjoyed watching these games! Love the game concept, mechanics and intricate political power struggle. I was mildly disappointed to see Matt play Bene Gesserit again, only because I would like to see a veteran player show different faction strategies. Lars is a stellar Harkonnen player, but I would like to see his Guild or Bene Gesserit play as well. At the time of writing this, I'm only 21 minutes in, so I'm holding out hope for a Bene Prediction victory!
I also don’t like the rule for battle that troops fight at half strength. However, I feel like it’s a good rule for Emperor and Spacing guild since they don’t have anything special during battle like, Harkonnens huge hand of treachery cards, Atreides ability to ask about the battle plan or BGs voice, what makes them a threat is they can out dial their opponents easier because of how rich they are so they still feel like a threat on the battlefield. It also makes Sardukar a lot more threatening when you have 1-3 with a group of regular forces. One thing I wish would change is the dial. The dial should somehow go up to 40 so that we can still use the advanced battle system but without half numbers. For veteran players, this isn’t an issue but I’ve seen newer players mess up their dial numbers a lot due to half numbers being involved. They will usually over dial and kill too many of their troops.
Dude, just got my copy of Dune after watching this and the other three, along with Shut Up & Sit Down's review of Dune, this game looks super fun, can't wait to play with my friends and family in the next week or two... Hope you guys do another Dune game eventually!

I can't wait until you play this again. These videos got me into the game and therefore the books
Matt! You need to turn up your game as Bene Gesserit. Seeing the win coming, that coexisting needed to end with lasgun :)
I know right? It's like he's not even trying :(
Mooooore Dune!! I just played my first game of it and you guys are the reason why I went and got it in the first place. Won as the Benes btw, but with brutal force :D
more Dune please!
Please more DUNE! ..and more Anna!
Zach played wrong at 19 min. He was looking at all the spice cards. You can only look at the card right before the bid
Played my first game of GF9s Dune yesterday after watching MCDMs videos and now there is a new one. I'm a happy camper.
No advanced combat really puts the Fremen at a disadvantage, and makes the spice economy overflow with money for shipment and revivals.
Agreed! Not sure why they are still playing double spice blow if they aren't doing spice-supported combat.
Really wish more vids of you playing Dune!
alternate bidding is a good idea. Here's a proposal on how to incorporate the Atreides "ability" to drive the prize on useless cards: let them reveal how much they're willing to pay first and then let all others choose their prize and reveal those at the same time.
I SAW THIS AND WENT KULL WAHAD
I FINISHED THE BOOK AGAIN TODAY FOR THE FIFTH TIME BLESS THE MAKER FOR THIS.
I'm rather excited. Can't wait to watch it. Hope you guys play even more :D
I think the alt bidding you're after is.
1. Eligible bidders willing to pay 1 put hand up (or other clear signal)
2. Keep hand up if willing to lay 2
3. Repeat 2 until a winner of bid (only 1 person goes to next price) or everyone left dropped out
4. If it was a tie, roll a die or whatever to chose at random between tied players.
This is f***ing fantastic, is there any more of this coming up? I'm going out tomorrow to find this game to buy! xD
Awesome game. This is a perfect example of how short this game CAN be. Perfect!
I just got my copy of the new Expansion and I can't wait to play! It adds the Ixians & Tleilaxu as playable factions. Both seem pretty interesting.
@@gjpokey Thx for the answer, it's never too late)
Is it actually „beaming down“, or is it flying down with transporters?
It's actually just flying down. The world of Dune has no sense of Star Trek style transporters. It just seems easier to understand when describing the rules to newer players.
I can see how playing with the Teleilaxu would make things more complex. If both sides lose lots of troops they can make out like bandits and then throw their own guys in bum rushes because they can use the money they just got to bring outer people's armies back and bring their own back making a battle of attrition.
Just played my first game with 3 other friends who hadn't even heard about the Dune universe and it was really fun, looking forward to bring in another two friends and play a proper game.
LOL! When I saw the duration of the video, I was like... "Uh. Somebody won fast!" :D GG TOM!
that truth trance was so anticlimactic haha
Glad this video got uploaded I watched the first 3 and will be buying a copy and playing my first game tomorrow
The fast bidding is neat, but it seems like it reeeeally hurts the Emperor's pocketbook.
Watching the first three episodes inspired me to buy the first Dune book, which I promptly finished in 4 days. Absolutely amazing book; thanks for the inspiration!
Since we didn't get a stream of the North Africa campaign, I say we should get a new round of Dune games going.
These Dune games were fun to watch :)
You need to do videos of Dune again, I love those 4 games that you've made. Sorry for my english I'm a fan from France, I hope that you'll find time to play this game again and to film it.
Votre anglais est parfait! Il n'y a aucun errures dans ta grammaire.
C'est certainement meilleur que mon français, qui est ma deuxième langue.
I love watching these games
yes yes yes, i got the game after watching your streams, even made my own acrylic spice!
By cutting a bunch of acrylic in different sizes? :D
Ohh.. new invention in bidding looks quite controversial. It makes less spice for the Emperor
Also spoils his alliance "power", unless you communicate very quickly with your partner before each bid.
guys, play more dune PLEASE
When Round 5?
I reading Dune Messiah now and I bought the Dune board game because of your Dune videos. House attreides is my favourite because even in the worst case scenario where your army at Arakeen is shield-lasgun exploded, you just ally with Fremen or Spacing guild, take 3 revives a turn and crush the enemy with Kwisatz Haderach.
I should proof read more often
Dang! 3 rounds off Matt, well played all!
Absolutely love these games!
Major book spoiler at 43:15. Skip to 45:00 before that point to evade it.
Before or after (spoiler) Paul kills Jamis?
@@codyc7477 ... you utter bellend
@@cl0udbear I don't get it
@@codyc7477 I'm trying to warn people of a book spoiler that got me during the stream, and you've replied with another spoiler.
@@cl0udbear I tagged it as a spoiler in jest. That's not a real spoiler. Jamis had a shorter lifespan than a Star Trek redshirt.
Dude, just got my copy of Dune after watching this and the other three, along with Shut Up & Sit Down's review of Dune, this game looks super fun, can't wait to play with my friends and family in the next week or two... Hope you guys do another Dune game eventually!
When I finally get around to playing, I’m definitely gonna use that quick bidding process.
@MCDM now that the movie is out could I humbly request a return to this marvelous game?
Gotta say, this was probably my favorite game so far. Great job, Tom!
Just finished all of these, they're great, thanks!
I think the 'tie in bidding goes to the first player' would work better if the 'first player' rotated after each card being bid on
I started running this via Facebook Chat and Google Docs. Hoping I can find someone that has made a good version of this that can be played online like Diplomacy. Right now I'm not playing because I'm the one running it.
I love your Dune rounds!
Wow, crazy fast game. I'd definitely love to see you guys playing more often.
