The Pretty Things are without any question one of the all time classic rock bands. Only bad management meant they didnt tour USA in the 60s so eluding world stardom. They did tour US in 90s and over their lifetime 1963 to 2020 recorded incredible music like the 2 ballsy 60s psych tracks featured today. Dick Taylor the guitarist was an original member of the Stones and Phil May the vocalist present throughout the bands long history. Also featured Viv Prince and Twink on drums in the 60s. The Pretty Things recorded a large number of amazing albums. Commercialy successful band particularly in UK releasing superb rnb singles like Rosalyn, Dont Bring Me Down (both later covered by Bowie) and Honey I Need in 1964 and superb follow up album in 1965 'Get The Picture'. Mr Evasion was an amazing psych single in 1967 b/w Defecting Grey (another awesome song). SF Sorrow (1968) is their best known album and rightly regarded as a classic, and the first rock opera album, a year before The Who's Tommy. Baron Saturday is my favourite track from 'SF Sorrow'. They recorded 13 studio albums, 14 live albums, and 34 singles in their lifetime. They also recorded 3 excellent albums under the name of 'Electric Banana' in 1960s for movie soundtracks. Thats another story. Monster of a band.
They were a great band. Far longer hair than the Stones, they started with the same rhythm'and'blues. My favourite was Don't Bring Me Down, a sort of theme song for us scruffy, mad beatniks! "I′m on my own, nowhere to roam I tell you baby, don't want no home I wander round, feet off the ground I even go from town to town I said I think this rock is grand Say I′ll be your man Don't bring me down, don't bring me down"
I discovered them just 10 years ago and they've become a favorite! They never broke up! Had their last album out just a couple years ago, just after their lead singer passed. You HAVE to react to their song, DEFECTING GREY! Like nothing you've ever heard before!
The band had several distinct periods--English white boy Blues, psychedelic, hard rock, and finally back to traditional blues. Their longtime guitarist was originally in the band that became the Rolling Stones!
Oh, and producer Norman Smith also worked with the Beatles and early Pink Floyd. He later had hit records on his own as a singer under the name HURRICANE Smith!
Defecting Grey was the double sider of Mr Evasion which was played today. I agree Defecting Grey is a corker but picked my favourite 2 first. Defecting Grey is incredible.
OMG, John E, talk about a blast from the past. These tracks take me back too many years to even think about, lol. I'm looking forward to more. Great reaction, L33 to these trippy songs. Far out, dude. Blessings and peace to all.
Thank you Shirley. I love the 60s psychedelic era and mid to late 60s music in general but I was only born in the late 60s! Sounds like you may have experienced it first hand. Lucky you! I usually pick trippy and rock songs for Lee. Look back at some of my selections!
SF Sorrow was the third of the great psychedelic albums that changed the UK's musical landscape for ever - Sgt Peppers and Piper At The Gates Of Dawn being the others - or it would have been if its release hadn't been delayed for a year, by which time the moment had passed. Mr Evasion is a non-album B-side. It backed Defecting Grey, and if you want to know what that sounds like you'll just have to hear it. I don't have the words to describe what's going on. Another must listen is Talkin' About The Good Times, which sounds like it was recorded 30 years later.
Exactly it was their managements bad decision not to join the British invasion tours in the States (after initial hits) that stifled their international appeal even though they were big in UK, Germany and also Australia
Such a great band. Too many great songs but here is a tiny selection - Defecting Grey Get a Buzz SF Sorrow Old Man Going Gonna Find Me A Substitute Rosalyn Buzz The Jerk Trippin' Talkin About The Good Times It'll Never Be Me Eagle's Son Street Girl I See You Whole SF Sorrow album
Lee, `Mr Evasion` was never on the original (Vinyl) album. In fact it hails from 1967! It was the `B` side to the groups November 1967 UK single `Deflecting Grey` And, That `A` side is as barmy as a `Box of Frogs!`.
A Great forgotten/unknown British band ! Just for the record they weren't pretty, they were contemporaries of the 'Stones ' and made them look like choir boys!!...
Wow, something I haven't heard yet. That was excellent! I just downloaded this album thanks to your channel, Lee.
You have impeccable taste. Hope you enjoy the album.
❤🎉❤never heard of them either thrup! They are fun! Definitely "psycho rock",lol! Kidding!🎶💕🎶
One of my favourite albums
And me
Such a cool psychedelic british band! Baron Saturday could be a song written by Dr.John...and they were from Sidcup, Kent (south east London)!
Great tracks they had.
One of the best bands ever
Classic British psych, mr evasive is one of four bonus tracks on some versions of the album, all of which are excellent.
First rock opera and many would suggest Old Man Going one of the first heavy metal songs from this album ….fantastic band

Listen to 'Get A Buzz' by this band. It is incredible rock for 1965.
Impressed! Love the Pretty Things!
The Electric Banana provided music for porn movies!

Like these strange vibes.
Back in the day all we needed were strange vibes, lol.
One of the most underrated bands/albums of the 1960s
Never heard of these guys... intrigued
Listen to whole SF Sorrow album it is wonderful and check out their excellent back catalogue
Mr Evasion

My favorite of Pretty Things is Silk Torpedo from 1974

Agree on all points
Very owl and the Pussycat.
Love the movie!
❤❤❤
Classic 60's album!
Check out their 1974 album "Silk Torpedo".
Have always loved this band. Should’ve been much bigger than they were 👍
Exactly it was their managements bad decision not to join the British invasion tours in the States (after initial hits) that stifled their international appeal even though they were big in UK, Germany and also Australia
You should start with the early Pink Floyd - The most psychedelic sounds I know.
Listen to Scream Thy Last Scream - Lee already done that one - psych masterclass

I always thought that Eno might have been influenced by these guys.

It certainly is and excellent with it
A Great forgotten/unknown British band !

Baron Sayurday - The percussion break in the middle - was Zeppelin inspired (euphimism) using the percussion break in "Whole Lotta Love?"🤔
This was recorded before Led Zeppelin even formed
Would it be fair or accurate to call this band a "Stoner Band?"
A new one for me. A little too wonky for my personal taste. He had a great voice though.
