    You have my respect for keeping positive composure on camera while you are sick.

    You're absolutely right, I try to clean the chips off the machine often, especially those accordion's. I give it a good scrub every time I change between different metals.

    I love the whistle of the steppers motors. When Im doing long runs of parts they sounds is soothing.

    You've got it, I ended up having to tap a ton of holes for this grinder and gave up using that tapping lube pretty quickly, just ended up using lots of WD40, worked great!

    Agreed, I noticed that several of my cordless drill tapped were crooked, so you're absolutely right that it's not perfect for precision work.

    Starrett puts out a great equivalents chart! I only use their tools for measuring. It gets expensive but the quality is worth it!

    And I completely agree about spiral flute taps. I've done lots of work with them, by drill, hand, and machine. The thing about drilling in your tap, you have inadequacies with tolerancing if you're doing anything precision because you're not working between centers.

    Form taps are awesome, I use them for all my 4-40 spacers. But I don't know if form taps would work with the cordless. Yeah they probably would, certainly worth a try!

    I did get the kit, the impact and the drill, use them both every single day I'm in the garage.

    Nice deburring tool, your learning new stuff every day. Learning to tap with a cordless drill, not so good.

    Google drill chart or tap drill chart, eventually you'll find a really good guide that you'll use all the time. Often times tool supply places will include a little postcard sized paper that has all the drill sizes and tap sizes, super handy! Mine says 2-56 threads need a #51 hole (1.7mm or 0.067") and that gives you a 74% thread engagement. Handy huh? Form taps use a different chart, they need bigger holes! I learned that the hard way.

    Yeah it is synthetic, good to know I'll keep it in mind. But I really like having clear coolant ;-).

    Nice video as always John! At the shop we only use Metaflux for all our tapping needs. Not that cheap but we get good tool life with it! Take care!

    I think I'm at something like 0.0004" and 0.0008" backlash, so it wasn't that. I realized later that I had replaced the probe tip and didn't zero it properly, so the probe itself was like 0.028" off.

  • @JohnGrimsmo
    @JohnGrimsmo  11 років тому

    Both, but yeah there's a good amount of rust in my humid shop. Enough people have mentioned it so I should probably sand it down haha.

    Metal Supermarkets, they have a store 5 minutes away from me. Lots of stores all over US and CAN.

    My ratio is fine, it's all the water evaporating into the air that's causing it all to rust.

    John what sort of backlash are you seeing on your mill? Is that why your circle was not on center after probing?
    It seems like I'm always chasing backlash on my G0704.

    Cool, I think I am going to just try tapping with the drill press. Alex Deitz showed me how to do it, Take the belt off and hand turn it, then the spring pressure of the drill press pulls it out. Should keep them pretty straight too. Btw do you know what size hole I should be drilling for 2-56 in Ti?

  • @andregross7420

    And that is why I don't use flood coolant on my mill:)

  • @IkkFedt
    @IkkFedt 11 років тому

    It's usually the water to oil ratio that's wrong when your machine starts to rust.

  • @MrLiamCooley
    @MrLiamCooley 11 років тому

    I like the new intro its a nice change. And thats a good idea about tapping with the drill. I keep breaking my 2-56 taps I might try the drill. Have you tried form taps? I have heard they work nicely on ti.

    That deburring tool, we call them deburring knives in my shop. I'm pretty sure the blades are carbide.

    nice job...where do you get all your metal stock from?

  • @ka1bbg
    @ka1bbg 11 років тому

    HI, S90V with inserts, consult the maker of your carbide inserts.... there is all kinds
    of carbide made for things such as interrupted cut, various metals, specialized carbide inserts... ask about the best carbide for the metal you are cutting...bf
