Thanks for being such a loyal subscriber! The button lock Norseman was over a year ago! I still have it and flick it every now and then. Part of me still wants to make a button lock, I'm sure I will one day.
Man that ATC is going to make your operations smooth as hell now!! Will give you ALOT more time to be working on other things, especially with how many tools you need to use for each run!! Happy for you man!!!!
I am really hooked on this show...learning so much stuff so glad I found you guys...can't wait to see my Norseman and learn even more about hardcore knife making skills. Lots of good times when the brothers are together...keep up the great work
The SuperFly is good for about 7 cubic inches of aluminum per minute. Pretty good for a low HP spindle! My next project needs to be an enclosure for my milling machine. I used the SuperFly to square up the edges of some .25" thick 1.5" X 1.5" aluminum angle for almost 100 brackets, and it threw tiny aluminum chips all over my basement shop. I tracked some of them upstairs. It makes longer chips when facing a plate, but it did very well on the interrupted cuts. Waiting to see it with Ti!
John, I've been watching since I stumbled upon week 1 over a year ago. Thanks for documenting your progress, it's fascinating to watch. I'm glad you've become so successful!
Thanks! We're really glad to share the knowledge and entertain you guys. You're going to love your Norseman. In the next 2-3 weeks I should have some good Norseman footage in the works, new stuff that I'm trying out to make them even awesomer.
We use a portable propane heater to take the edge off, but our shop isn't insulated and we don't leave it on too long. So we wear lots of layers and try to keep moving
There's another guy interested in it as well, so I'm not sure how long it's going to last before someone puts money down to have their name on it. I'll definitely be doing a whole video on the making of that specific knife, should be awesome. And I'm sure I'll make more in the future.
What I would give to come hang out with you guys for a day. I love watching all the machines eat away at the metal. Maybe nest year I will be able to open a present from santa and have a Norsemen in it. Hope all the best for you guys in the new year.
Man I remember when the Norseman was still a button lock. Seems like forever ago but then again it's like BAM 3 knives all of a sudden, well lets say 2.5, the Integral is not quite done. I've loved following this journey, keep it up.
Not yet, however it will lose tooltable and fixture offsets if you don't properly close the program, you know where it asks you to save those two things. So in a power outage I always loose stuff. I've gotten into the habit of shutting down Mach3 every time I make a significant change to the tooltable or fixture offsets, then just open the program again, home, continue. That being said, I've already broken two sets of finger bolts due to goofy mistakes haha.
Me toooooooo! I'll be making it with this next batch, so within a month it'll be alive. I'm trying to decide between honeycomb and diamond pattern, leaning towards diamond.
Heck yeah! It'll probably be its own little series of videos, depending on how long it takes and/or how much footage I take while building it. Should be fun.
The ATC. Like we didn't see that coming. :-) Sweet. I love how Eric is so stoked he's skipping in the shop. I don't think I've skipped in, like, 40 years. I suspect that Santa brought Eric more than just machining stuff. Family Guy isn't *THAT* funny. I also love how Eric got you an R/C helicopter for Christmas and then proceeded to crash it. :-) I'm still loving my Tormach SuperFly. I love carbide insert tooling, and the SuperFly is my new favorite of the carbide insert tools.
There are ways to easily ship to Canada, but it certainly is more difficult and annoying. Glad to hear that I've converted you! The gun culture in Canada is probably 1/100th of what it is in America, probably less, and while we do enjoy going to the range and shooting some cool toys, we're not gun nuts.
If you guys need help with the grinder tracking system I can take a pic from my belt sander/grinder and send it to you since it can be tricky to design. Use the helicopter to transport parts in the shop!
I'm going to cut it out myself and there will hardly be any left at all. I can squeeze 2-3 pocket clips in this chunk along with the pair of handles. Hopefully a thumbstud too!
Hmmm.. Im not sure what would look better! Jeeze I have no idea Im thinking the diamond would show it better but I have no idea. Maybe try it out first one the cut drops. Like the scrap outline pieces that are water jet if you are getting it water jet.
Some day, yeah. But for now we just really need to CLEAN it and organize it better. There's tons of junk in there taking up space, and with more shelves we'll have tons of room. Should be able to get a car in there again, maybe, one day...
Love the vids! I guessed the auto tool changer:) You guys should make a bali at some time, they are simple, fun to make, and you can go crazy with the design! Just look at some of the customs!
Right on. One more question, when you finish knives with the Wicked Edge, what is your stone progression? 100/200/400/600/800/1000/1200/1600/1 micron/0.5 micron?
It's time to start skipping man! I used the superfly today on high carbon blade steel, it throws HUGE blue chips EVERYWHERE. It's fantastic. My metal removal rate was about 1ci according to Gwizard and the spindle didn't sound like it was struggling at all.
Erik might be there if he doesn't decide to travel, but Meg's due that weekend so I'm not going to be able to make it. However, we'll definitely see you at Blade if not sooner.
I forget exactly what it's called but it's a liquid marker, probably similar to your paint pen. Seems to hold up alright, but definitely wears off over time and use.
That looks to have been a bloody expensive christmas, well done both of you! To get to this stage must have been hard work but your new toys make it worthwhile. :) Now get onto modifying that RC helicopter to fly using Norseman blades as rotor blades. Best regards from the U.K.
FYI, it is not Mcmaster that sucks, but shipping to Canada! Great videos guys, I didn't even like knives until I started watching your videos, very cool designs and info. Have you guys thought about making gun parts?
what did you use to mark your tools with? we used a paint pen but the paint comes off of the tools in use. we did prepare the surfaces with acetone and used a quality paint pen. please help!!!!!!!
Welcome back, Eric. Nice new toys! Man you guys have a ton of equipment. I'm just now getting set up for knifemaking and leatherwork/kydex and scavenging for tools myself. I love your DIY approach. The more you can do in-house the better. Just curious, what do you use to heat your shop area?
John I have been running into a odd Issue with my ATC losing its Z loading position and breaking fingers after computer restarts. Have you seen that happen on your machine?
How many timascus Norseman you gonna make? I would like to upgrade to timascus handles on my Norseman if at all possible....already wanted the rainbow effect that would make it freaking amazing!!! Let me know
Hi John cool vid! I don't know why, but your brother reminds me of Grover from the Sesame street. ;-) You two make awesome knives, i like them alot! I hope i'll hold one in my hands someday. Mike
You can blame the US government for your McMaster woes. They used to ship internationally, but got wrist slapped by the DoD for violating ITAR export restrictions. I would be careful about advertising that Tormach helped you import McMaster merchandise without an export license. Excellent videos otherwise.

I'm excited for you John! I hope one day I get to where you are :)
Thanks buddy! You're on a faster track than I was when I started.
A very good, deep question.
And I can't wait to build it! Stay tuned, I've got some Norseman footage planned in a week or two.
awesome update guys ! nice new tools im so jealous !!!!
Yesss finally you got a ATC!!!
Feeling so happy for you :D

Just one Timascus Norseman will be made, and it does not have a buyer yet. Shoot me an e-mail and we'll discuss it there!
Heck yeah! It'll probably be its own little series of videos, depending on how long it takes and/or how much footage I take while building it. Should be fun.
If you mean the Timascus Norseman, not sure yet, but somewhere between $1000-1200.
The ATC. Like we didn't see that coming. :-) Sweet.

I'm not saying I've paid for everything yet, but yes, from knife sales only.
It's time to start skipping man!

Hey! North Texas actually got a few inches on Christmas....
Good stuff! Cant wait for my Norseman!
Erik might be there if he doesn't decide to travel, but Meg's due that weekend so I'm not going to be able to make it. However, we'll definitely see you at Blade if not sooner.

If more people did what they loved, I wonder how the dynamic of things like the economy as you spoke of would change?
That looks to have been a bloody expensive christmas, well done both of you! To get to this stage must have been hard work but your new toys make it worthwhile. :)

I got the website link in my e-mail, those are genius! I'll get some for sure, and my wife wouldn't mind tagging along to Ikea.
will you be filming the grinder build?? would love to see that!!
Who me? A tease? C'mon, nobody saw this ATC coming..... hahahaha.
I really wanna see this Timascus Norseman
I figured I needed to throw that in there, I should do it more often haha. Make it blatantly obvious and goofy sometimes.
Can always ship in 2 packages as "spare parts"....
Looks like you might outgrow that garage pretty soon.
Yep. Never thought id need more than 100, and then...

Now you can go watch tv , when its cutting. Loll
Watching your video on your flat stock. Might be cheaper to get a time saver sander in the long run too rough down your stock.
