try looking at it like this. beck may see daniel johnston as an influence. someone who inspires him to write. like many other established musicians, he wants to feel the beauty of this incredible song. there is a difference, especially for music artists, between hearing a beautiful song and playing it. i believe beck sings this song in ode to daniel johnston, as well as to feel, even greater, the emotional depth of such a masterpiece.

This is a tremendous cover, it keeps the original aspects of the song and goes from a different direction due to becks voice. He didn't 'kill' the song, he sang it a different way from Daniel. Some people just think DJ is the best at everything and nothing he does can be compared to by anything, or anyone, else!

Since the Daniel Johnston songbook basically doubles as his autobiography it doesn't make sense for others to be singing it. I do like the gesture though... artist like Beck and the Flaming Lips have helped to expose Daniel Johnston's brilliant art to the world.
