I would definitely say those were incendiary rounds, tracers start burning from inside the barrel because of the powder igniting the "pyrotechnics" in the tracer round and not on impact like in the video

If those are M25 tracers, they won't ignite until 100 yds down range - the idea was for the tracer to indicate closeness to the target and not indicate where the shooter is.

I used to manufacture BR laminate of glass and polycarbonate. The level of protection depends on the expected threat. For military vehicles like the MRAP, we used nine layers of half inch, low iron glass with quarter inch hardened glass strike face and three quarters of an inch of polycarbonate innermost as a spall shield. This would stop .50AP. The standard was three rounds inside a 12 inch triangle with no penetration. Three round impact resistance should allow time to escape the kill box. We made THOUSANDS of them.

I'm not sure if there are different kinds of tracers, but the ones I've used (conscript in the Swedish army) were just ordinary rounds with a small gob of phosphor stuck to the bottom of the bullet. It takes a little while before the phosphor starts reacting with the oxygen in the air, so it only ignites after travelling a few (10 or so) meters. Good thing too, cleaning the machine gun would've been even more of a b-tch with burnt phosphor all over it. :D
So yeah, it's basically like a tiny tiny incendiary round.

    • @bills6093
      @bills6093 6 років тому +5

The tracer compound is ignited by the powder charge. It has it's own oxidizer and doesn't need exposure to the air.

    • @tommysedin

Would make a lot more sense, but this was back in the 90s - and as part of the conscript army we were always training with the cheapest stuff available (i.e. old, leftover ammo). Heck, my brother that's only 6 years my elder was issued a Kpist -45 ("Swedish K").

    • @StPaul76
      @StPaul76 5 років тому

I did some machine gun shooting with tracers back in -96 in the FDF and they pretty much lit up at the muzzle but the compound was in the tip of the bullet.. Also they did give a bit of a flash when impacting on steel as the compound was splattered all over.. My enlightened guess here is that the tracers boys had here sort of ignited on the kinetic energy of the impact.. The coolest thing however was the 12,7x109 AA-machinegun spitting 800rpm belt full of tracers and incendiery.. Shit got on fire and dirt and splinters were flying all over.. Especially vivid was to see tracers ricocheting and flying half a mile arcs and incendiery igniting 100 meters up in the air after skimming from shit.. :D

@@StPaul76, it is highly unlikely (as in impossible) to have a tracer round constructed with the tracer element in the tip.
How would you see it during flight and how would it be ignited and burned??
I think what you meant to infer is that your rounds were of an "incendiary" construction and, Yes, the incendiary material (powdered zirconium crystals usually) was in the forward-most part of the interior of the outer jacket.
Upon impact with any "hard" target, the internal, dense, steel or tungsten penetrator (IF also an AP round) would obviously continue forward until it crushed the zirconium crystals, causing intense (!!) heat and, thus, the "flash" which can be quite pronounced.
Depending on the kind of ordinance (but usually .50 caliber and above due to construction complexity and lack of interior real estate) rounds can include:
      Armor Piercing,
      Incendiary,
Tracer or a combination of some/all of these.
When assembled and the projo tip painted, the nomenclature for the round would be labeled as:
      API-T
      (Armor Piercing Incendiary-Tracer)
to denote what it actually was.
Tracers by their very nature are used to show where rounds are falling to ensure good target coverage.
Armor Piercing are designed to defeat (AKA Penetrate) hard or hardened targets up to a given distance, thickness and material construction.
Incendiary are designed to set fire to surrounding materials as well as to cause fuels/oils to burn when exposed to the HOT debris of the burning crystals.
      There you go.
We are all more smartened up for the day.

When I shoot MILSURP ammo in my 03A3 Springfield, it just loves M2AP cartridges. At 100 yards, if I do my part, it will fire a group you can cover with a quarter. Penetration isn't an issue since it would have to shoot through a quarter mile of hillside to hit something on the other side.

Can do this with dangerous game loads using 220 grain round nose softs. What it does at 100 yards is irrelevant since Alaska's big three (moose, buffalo, Kodiak bear) is best approached to within fifty yards.

It depends on the purpose of the tracer. If it is an "over head training" tracer then it is likely to be seen immediately after exiting the muzzle. If it is a tactical round, then the subigniter and igniter chain will burn without significant signature delaying initiation of the illuminating grain until it is downrange. If it is a "dim" tracer then it can't be seen at all without light amplification. If it is an IR tracer, then it can't be seen without an IR imager.
It depends on when the rounds were manufactured, who made them, and how they are marked.

Later tracers are set up to begin to trace at 25 yards or more. This to hopefully hide the shooters location. Old tracers leave the tracers compound exposed in the back of the bullet. Newer ones have what looks like a large domed primer in the bottom. This may be to protect the primer compound from degrading.

Tracers are like a strike match, the initial burn isnt much, and takes a split second to fully ignite. With a bullet, it travels so fast the full ignition will not happen until it travels 100 yards, depending on the type of ammo etc. Pistol rounds will travel slower and tracer will light up earlier, a rifle round travels much faster so will travel further.
When a tracer strikes before full ignition, the compound tends to splatter with the bullet breaking apart. If it passes through, it tends to lose the compound from the projectile and it will burn for 10 seconds even if submerged. A hit to a human torso tends to follow that pattern and boil out blood in a foamy goo. The rhodesians called the hit targets floppies, as theyd tend to flop around on the ground until the tracer compound burnt out.
No bullshit, Ive thrown more than a million .308 down range in a single day. I can hit a target with a 240b from 1,000 yards in bad bush and do it all day everyday. I know the sweet spot for them babies, know their drop rates, know their conical dispersion. At 150 yards, typically, depending on barrel length etc, 150 yards is the most stable with the least inertia drop and most likely to penetrate steel plates. Each weapon handles slighrly differently, just takes a few rounds to judge it. It does take some flight time to fully stabilize the.7.62x54 round. They have an odd warble out the barrel and it makes for a messy close range hit. I tend to dial my scopes in at 200 yards, but uave a few setup for longer range. Youd be surprised what stock a ptr g1 can do with a dialed in scope.

The last shoot was 10 rounds grouping. It was a tight group, and the smoke cloud behind the target got a little bigger after each shot ...
Fortunately, the brush and straw were sparse enough to burn out fast.

The tracer rounds will be hard to see at short range in bright daylight. The phosphorous blob at the tail end of the bullet is indeed ignited when the round is fired, but it takes a short time for it to start burning fully. When impacting, the phosphorous material will continue to burn and it is not uncommon that it detach from the bullet and flies around its own way. Especially at night, you can see this when target shooting and you could think it is the entire bullet ricocheting up and away - but it is just the burning material. Bright red/orange tips are indeed the marker for M62 ammo, 7.62x51 NATO tracers.
The M61 armor piercing rounds are indeed fun plinking rounds and it is amazing what it can penetrate. They are hard hitting little buggers :) They would not have any problems stopping cars and trucks by disabling their engines or penetrating some lightly armored vehicles (M113, Im looking at you!) :)

3:50, I have projectiles that appear to be from 30-06 AP rounds. A 164 grain, flat base, boat tail, FMJ with black tip. I removed the jacket and found a steel penetrator similar to that in the video that was shaped like a boat tail projectile. These appear to be the projectile from the 30-06 M2 AP rounds.
I loaded some into 7.62mm cartridge cases with a moderate load of powder for the projectile weight. Shot AR 500 metal at 200 yards with them in the day time. Result was very big, bright, flash of sparks. The AR 500 plates only had the paint knocked off with no apparent damage to the AR 500 1/4" plate. I do not know what the bullet velocity was.
One day I might load more of these with a maximum recommended powder charge, per my Hornaday reloading manual. Especially since I now have the Garmin chronograph so I can measure bullet speed.

I'm no expert on ammo, but I knew that Pearson round was going through that copper like hot butter! It's been 30yrs so ammo was fresher, and I was using a ww1 Springfield, but as a teenager I prob shot 40-60rds of those through everything from old straight 6 cast iron engine blocks telephone polls.. my grandpa had a legit military arsenal and there was never any shortage of ammo.. Even those Red tip tracers (always on new yrs and the 4th July) those tracers basically had miniature road flares in the ass end... I shot one through the woods at night and saw so many ricochets I thought the round was coming back to me... I did manage to set the woods on fire, but from then on ive been nervous to go into the woods during deer season! Great video!

In my youth, my dad had a white Prinz, (not sure I spelled it right). This was in the late 60s, early 70s. We had to push start it because he couldn't figure out how to fix it. It also wouldn't shift into 3rd. We got it once. That little car could really move. Sorry just surprised to hear about such an obscure car. Dig your videos.

If youre wondering why those tracer rounds didnt go off, its because they need to travel a certain distance before they "fire off" Generally around 50-75 meters is where they light up.

  • @cluckinwing8388

There’s a myth busters episode where they’re trying to shoot a gas tank to set fire to a vehicle like Hollywood does in every other movie, and nothing would work. They even tried tracer rounds and nothing was happening. Then they found out that they had to shoot a target at like 150+ yards before the tracers would light up and glow. This might be the reason why y’all weren’t seeing the tracers glow. Great video though.

l wilton, I can say with some authority on the topic that’s not true. Ammo can be laying next to the gun but can’t be “attached” to the gun per CA Penal Code. I recommend students don’t let it touch the gun just to be safe. I’ve never heard of the six foot thing. F&G and CHP operate in vastly different environments my friend.

In the UK, it's a firearms offence to "cause interruption to any person" with the sound of an air gun (that isn't legally a firearm) being discharged *within 50 feet of the centre line of a highway* or to have a loaded air gun on a road without due cause. This creates the silly situation that I can legally shoot from the private woodland by the stream towards the road but not from the road towards the private woodland across the stream ... and yes, we do have "four lanes and a hard shoulder in each direction" highways here and they are more than 100 feet wide.

I think I have between 200-500 rounds of Lake City Arsenal black tipped 30-06 date stamp 1943, loose. Once had 1500 rnds but lots of punching holes in paper later, Never had a misfire. You all want? I'm currently in Amarillo (I RV full time). All the bullets could be pulled the brass cleaned and reloaded, reliably punch holes in 1" plate at 100 yards.
