    Adult Natty feels genuine; she found her style, found her voice and she's killing it

    • @cloudchungxiao
      @cloudchungxiao  Місяць тому +56

      The factor and significance of youth within Kpop means we rarely see adultness being embraced like that. Natty has definitely done it right while having her vocals compliment this kinda idol concept she has.

    • @brzt4256
      @brzt4256 Місяць тому +8

      There's an interview on this show, I don't remember the name, where she was with Belle and two vocalists from NMIXX, where she says she has two modes: her interview mode and her performance mode. The latter is more sultry and 'adult', whereas the former is more cutesy. Her natural speaking voice is also much higher pitched than her singing voice. I don't think her performance mode is a reflection of who she is as a person, it's just a performance. If you prefer that performance to something more cutesy, that's something else entirely.

    • @cloudchungxiao
      @cloudchungxiao  29 днів тому

      Ohh yea, there is an aspect of idol persona that we might be overlooking as her "personality" which is similar to how interview / camera mode might be different to if she was living normal without a camera in her face. I don't think we'll really know what a real Natty personality is but I guess it's all inferring.

    Can we also talk about how much she’s grown as a person who was forced to follow the toxic practices enforced on her as a child?!! She’s so vocal about body image and skin tone and how she no longer gives into diet culture. The way she took full control of her debut as her company was against the whole release of sugarcoat is so commendable! She really took this as her last chance and refused to let another company create her image and instead to control of her own narrative and image and look how amazing it did!! Sugarcoat is quite literally the best solo song since 3rd gen and not to mention how she choreographed the whole song!! She’s turned into such an amazing all-rounder!

    • @cloudchungxiao
      @cloudchungxiao  29 днів тому +1

      Ohh damm, I didn't realise the extent of how much control she took with Sugarcoat and all that. Would this be from Lee Haein's video or is this something that Natty said?

      @@cloudchungxiao she’s mentioned it in many shows but the ones the I can remember from the top of my head are, Lee haein’s UA-cam channel, idol radio and jaejae’s show with SWF’s gabee, SNSD’s sooyoung and after school’s Kahi! It is actually so crazy how she was so determined to really show her real self! She’s not praised enough for it!

      Yea, being a soloist can be really tough in many aspects. I'm glad she's enjoying but also thriving in Kiss of Life

  • @celestialdorm
    @celestialdorm Місяць тому +121

    Ngl. Natty being in a group saved her career. She's talented, but I feel like she fits the group member persona the most because, as a soloist, she was not getting as much attention and support as she should, but now that she has people to banter off of and is talented in all aspects, she really stands out and fits right in with the kiss of life.

    • @CrisOnTheInternet
      @CrisOnTheInternet Місяць тому +6

      Does any soloist actually get the level of attention of a group? I think of Boa, IU and Sunmi as famous soloists but I don't think they're as know as the kpop groups.

    • @cottonhxney
      @cottonhxney Місяць тому +9

      @@CrisOnTheInternet It is definitely harder as a soloist. Much of the industry is centered around groups ("Best Male Group", "Best Female Group", Best Band Performance, Best Unit, Best Mixed Group (retired MAMA Award, etc). Groups are easier to gain attention because the different amount of members with unique charms increases the chance that someone will stick to the group just for their bias.
      BoA and IU are a unique story because Korea has loved them since early on in their career. Sunmi was loved in Wonder Girls, criticized for leaving and then redebuting, and only really got some of Korea's love with Gashina and the following tracks.
      As a group, each member, even during their solo schedules, has the opportunity to promote their group. For example, if Yuqi from GIDLE goes overseas and someone likes her, they'll start researching her and wanting to watch all the content with her. That leads them to GIDLE. For soloists, all promotion is on them and only them. Many prefer to debut in a group and then have a solo debut while still in the group.

    • @ananyasubramani4596
      @ananyasubramani4596 Місяць тому +5

      @@CrisOnTheInternet I'd say BoA, Lee Hyori, IU at their peaks were more popular than a lot of groups. Same for Rain and Se7en. Also, IOI's soloists (Somi, Chungha) are wayyyy more popular than its groups (Gugudan, Weki Meki, Pristin).
      They're not as popular in 3rd and 4th Gen though

    • @cloudchungxiao
      @cloudchungxiao  29 днів тому +1

      Yea, kpop is really group focused and so there is a further obstacle to navigate as a soloist. I think very few idols can actually be a successful soloist from ground up; and even then the success will not be as consistent without the right factors.

    After watching both Sixteen and Idol School, I was awaiting Natty's solo debut because I could see her potential as an idol. As much as I like Nineteen and Teddy Bear (with adoring the latter), Sugarcoat blows them both out of the water. I'm really happy that she got to see the rewards of her hard work through Kiss of Life (along with the other members, of course).

    • @cloudchungxiao
      @cloudchungxiao  Місяць тому +10

      Yesss, her journey seems like one that was really right person, wrong timing. It would be interesting to imagine what would have happened if she got in Twice or Fromis 9 but then also would we have gotten Kiss of Life Natty then.

  • @hello1868
    @hello1868 Місяць тому +96

    Her journey in the industry is so inspiring!! The rebrand definitely helped her blossom further into her personality too. It reflects the “true Natty’s” tastes and as she continues to develop, so will her idol persona given the amount of artistic liberty and individualism their group identity has. Although I hadnt known about her previous projects and only learned about Natty when Kiss of Life debuted, I could immediately tell the current concept of her “character” in Kiof and Kiof as a whole just… makes perfect sense for her. Her concept now vs her solo era fits her in a way that’s so much more natural and comfortable for her to lean into, but of course growing older, gaining more experience in life/the industry, and finding her personal identity as an adult definitely helped. Huge props to Lee Haein as well for taking each of the girl’s personalities in account to form the group’s image.
    Sugarcoat was THEE MOMENT last year, it’s still one of my go to songs to bop to these days. Her voice to me is like smooth caramel. Perfect for r&b. I really hope they produce more r&b/groovy sounding songs, the girls have stated how much they love the genre and Natty especially is in her element with songs like Sugarcoat and Taxi Blurr… the Sugarcoat cameo in the Sticky MV is already giving me a lot of hope haha
    She’s been in the industry for half of her life and has gone through so many personal trial and errors. Her stack of experience is a big part of her character and it’s fun to see being played into i.e. the callbacks to her actual life in their debut album- starting off solo auditioning, falling/collapsing 3 times in the Bye My Neverland MV (speculated to be referencing 1. Sixteen 2. Idol school 3. Her solo career before Kiss of Life). Everything just seems like it fell right into place when it was ready to for Natty, all her hard work continues to pay off

    • @cloudchungxiao
      @cloudchungxiao  Місяць тому +5

      Yea, I do wonder how much of sugarcoat really reflects her as a person in comparison to a nineteen. The artistic liberties that I'm hearing Kiss of Life get does slightly reassure me that this is kinda a relatively more real depiction that Natty wants but also thrives in. It definitely helped that Lee Haein and Natty had such a strong connection from Idol School to further build on this through developing Kiss of Life. The MV anaylsis though. Never really looked into the meaning too much of what certain aspects meant but damm; that's wild if these were callbacks to Natty's career. But it's great because it ends with Shhh, coming together and creating the start of something new and hopeful.

    she said in a interview, she was in 6 labels and finally she got the right one. the girls made a powerpoint to the S2 Ent. guys explain what they like, what they want, what they do, they have a reunion, talk about it and next they all go out to eat like a family, Julie told this in a interview to pH-1. is a great interview, a serious one. Natty and Julie many times help with choreos, Belle help with writing, prodution or the english pronunciation of her fellow members....they are really involve with the company, so that helps too, so who say, for example "Sticky" is too sexy, is on purpose, is not a company thing, they like it, they wanna the place left by SISTAR

    I think you’re exactly right on Nineteen & Teddy Bear not being the sort of music she was interested in & I think that a major reason for her rebranding is Natty being able to advocate for herself more now. At Swing she was 18 & had pretty much been moved around the wider company as CJ Ent saw fit. At S2 she was older & was involved more in decision-making to the point that she was the one really pushing to choose Sugarcoat as her solo track over another song.

    I think that kpop and pop fans have a lot in commoun, I personaly dont see why create another channel and build a new audience. I am a fan of both.
    Unless that you want to focus many consecutive videos that may have a very distintive tone / format more then subject that you have done.
    Example of another yt:
    there is an art channel I follow that started with techiniques tutorial in 3d sculturing.
    did a video " how I got my art stolen/ how to do watercolor effects" unfocus videos that mixed a compelling story about his carreer, while a video of him working played. But he did some pauses to explain as if were a tutorial and ended the video with a plug for and techinical e book.
    For whom the title and the story was more compeling, the script was a little akward. For who was used to want to watch to learn in details step by step, got frustraded to not actually get a tutorial , but a " kitchen chat".
    The execution wasnt well tied, and changed the type of content that he want to make, not more 3d sculturing but other types of midia. And sometimes stories.
    It will change the profile of who will follow him, a total re branding.
    --
    In your case there is probaly a continum between kpop analysis and pop analysis. Maybe try to publish 1 or 2 in this new subject and see if the metrics, or followers response is good enought to see if is worthy to start a new channel.
    I like culture analys / history type of channel because I trust on their method and presentation. So their subject can be anything that I may never even know but I will check it out.
    --
    Ps
    🤷‍♀️ I know a few yt channel owners irl consistence and some deviantion seens to works on their fields ( most do yt to sell services/ education).
    Other there is in yt for almost 10 years post with almost no focus on format but just a loose sense of theme, only grew big last year when started to do more humorist " template style" informative videos in the same theme. More or less in the vein of shorts script style.

    Good luck

      Thanks for the advice. Kpop is definitely still just a hobby that I like to enjoy while also understanding the background / discourse on issues of. There are definitely parallels that I can see with them that made me think that I could potentially just branch out even more with. However, I wasn't too sure how much that also translate with a paralleled audience who would vibe with those types of video. Defs will give it a try on this channel and see what the reception is.

    this was the analysis i needed- the old natty seems like a cutesy twice wannabe which WAS NICE but I think it didn't feel as genuine ass sugarcoat natty? if that makes senses
    also- I'm not sure if you noticed but in your voiceovers, your voice is only on the right side- not sure if this is a panning issue when editing or your mic direction when recording- but when wearing headphones your voice only comes out of the right whereas the rests of the clips audio would be balanced

    • @cloudchungxiao
      @cloudchungxiao  29 днів тому

      The slippery slope with that is that we don't know what genuine Natty is in that maybe technically both songs embodied who she was but from our subjective view; we may prefer one over the other to think the other wasn't genuine. But yea, I think the relatively generic-ness of nineteen didn't help too much.
      Yea, I saw the comments hahaha. When editing and uploading the video my headphones had no problem and was playing the audio from both ears. It wasn't until I used airpods is when I heard the sound issue. Defs will have it fixed for my next video.

      @@cloudchungxiaoduring an interview with naver she said that both NINETEEN and TEDDY BEAR were not representative of her true self. Whilst she looks back at those two releases fondly as they were age appropriate, she felt as though she was playing a character. Natty wants to embody the Y2K era so I’m guessing sugarcoat is just an insight of her true creative direction?

    • @cloudchungxiao
      @cloudchungxiao  25 днів тому

      Haven't seen that interview but it's great the its the direction she was to embody. The only thing that I would-ish kinda think about is the fact that her saying that is kinda the equivalent to idols saying their new fave title track is the most recent one as a way to promote it even more. In saying that, Natty did have a bit more control in her solo debut in S2 in comparison to Swing so there is plausability of it being more her.
      As well as that, people are multi facted and so Y2K might just be one aspect to her and not her whole complete personality. So the whole what might be geuine thing is really hard to navigate at times.

      She isn't actually. She's one of the less well-off Thai idols (in fact probably the least well-off with regards to notable Thai idols) - there was a Thai TV program a few years ago that interviewed her family during her solo debut era and toured her house. They're very middle-class (if compared to the average American, they would be solidly lower class). She said in an interview a few years back (solo era) that she was desperate to debut as quickly as possible because she needed to earn money to pay back & support her family.
      I can't find that particular video now but her dad was on a TV show awhile back.
      ua-cam.com/video/vQIOAF18CNM/v-deo.htmlsi=m7I9WjVM-Gu2kKbI&t=300
      He's the slightly chubby man with glasses. Basically her dad runs a small family-run agency for child models and organizes dance competitions for teens (he's on the show to pitch to investors for money to open an acting school). It's not a particularly lucrative business but he's obviously passionate about it so I'm not surprised by he continued to support Natty for so long. He mentioned in the show that his dream is to send Thai kids to the world stage, so in some way her dream is his dream. I'm glad they're both seeing it to fruition after fighting a decade for this.

    Beyound balads, do soloist on the kpop / idol genere* trive over groups in korea ? Or the group system is more stable to build a fanbase ?
    A comment above seens to imply that many soloist would be better in a group setting. 🤷‍♀️ western pop is predominant solo acts.
    * for my understandment kpop and idol music are 2 sister generes in korea. Idol music is what most of the world resumes kpop to be, while there still pop in korea that dont follow the same marketing / parasocial / dance focus performances scheme of kpop.

      Yea, Kpop groups get more benefit and are more favored for many reasons. As for soloist, they just tend to struggle more due to the different system built within Kpop in comparison to western industry. There are more factors of consideration within Kpop that puts pressure for that one individual to thrive in. The only exception to this is if you were in a group before branching solo which is a shortcut route to potentially thriving more. However, there are also additional factors to consider that might deplete the thrivingness.

    • @cloudchungxiao
      @cloudchungxiao  29 днів тому +1

      Is this in reference to male soloist? If so, yea. I mean it depends on how marketable the idol has become to warrant a solo; but military service allows for the male idol to just do a solo. Not sure about being experimental though; just because it's a case by case basis on who has the control and narrative for the solo releases (being either the company or the idol).
