Depending on the status of your vehicle will determine if it's worthwhile for a full replacement of pads, rotors, and calipers, just a replacement for one of those things, or a combination. The key takeaway here is that you might not need to replace your calipers entirely, in which case a refresh-the process Jay outlines in this DIY-might be the best route for you.
Jay details how painting the calipers (after thoroughly cleaning them, of course) will improve the look of the vehicle by hiding the unsavory finish calipers gain after several years of use. Jay goes on to show the full process on how to replace pads and rotors, ultimately installing everything back together with the refinished calipers. The resulting package looks (and performs) miles better than the outgoing components.

A little tip to stop that annoying drip from the open brake line, place a pry bar between the seat and brake pedal and depress it about 1/4 of the way down. Will stop fluid from emptying from the reservoir. :)

If the bolt is rusted into the threads it helps to tighten it first a little to make it less likely that it strips or breaks while removed.

Use caliper bleeder dust cap to cover the exposed brake line. Wont leak

I think the issue is with the graphics [white letter overlay "|7"] on the 7 mm Allen--because you clearly say "7 millimeter" NOT 17.
Finally, I just take the top off the brake fluid reservoir & change out my pads & use large Knipex Cobra pliers to push the brake
pistons back down. I don't fool around w/ brake lines if I dont have to....

Question: As you did not replace the rubber brake hoses, why did you unscrew the calipers as opposed to just hanging them up somewhere? Many thanks, -Harvey G.

Why didn't you clean (take the paint off) the rotors?
it might a zinc coating , fitted some discs recently that were coated like these it didn't clean off with solvent after a quick test drive the coating was completely gone with no I'll affects
It's a protective coating that first breaking will take care of and rest of disc will remain protected from element for longer.
Suprisingly this is one of the easiest DIY cars to work on.

Hi Carlo, good question! While normal practice is to start farthest away from the mater cylinder, different cars have specific orders based on location and length of the hard-brake lines coming off the mater cylinder.
what size wrench did you use for for the brake hose ??

How important are those rattle clips on the rear calipers? I replaced mine, and it kept snapping out of place, until I finally lost it.
The brakes might be a bit noisier without them, but should still work fine.
The rear caliper slider bolts are 7MM allen not 17 as stated
Hi quick question.. I am doing only the rear portion of this job, no front brakes. Is it still necessary to start the bleeding process with the front? Or can I just bleed the rear? Since I’m only doing the rear.. thanx.
While it is recommended to bleed the whole system, you can get away with just bleeding the rear if you are only replacing the rear calipers.

He said you start at the caliper closest to the master cylinder. The service manual says the same thing.
The order goes:
1. LF
2. RF
3. LR
4. RR

I overhauled according to this video and was successful. My problem is my breaks squeal most of the time on the last 20 ft of a stop. why is this?
Hi, Greg. Glad you were able to successfully overhaul your brakes! Brake squeal could be a number of things. Some types of pads can be noisy, other times it could be not enough grease/ceramic paste on the ears of the pads. So long as your brakes are functioning properly the noise should not alarm you, unless it gets worse. If the noise is very annoying you can take the pads out and try putting ceramic paste/grease on the rear shim and on the ears of the pad to try and quiet it down.
@@fcpeuro Hey Guys I re greased the break pads and the squeal is gone. Only trouble is when i press the break pedel it feels like i have to press all the way down on the pedal to get the same breaking power that pressing half way used to produce. what have i done and how do i remedy this?

@@gregoliver705 Sounds like you need to bleed the brakes again. My indy mechanic says always use Volvo pads to avoid squeal. I use anti seize on the sliders.
I'm sorry bringing this up again after all this time.
But I currently own an s60 from 2009.
If I want to upgrade from 288mm to 330mm rotors. Do I need to do any custom work besides the replacement itself.
Hi Bekie, the 330mm brakes are from the S60R/V70R, you can not just swap to the larger rotors, you need all the corresponding components such as the Brembo calipers, rotors, pads, backing plates, etc all from the R model. You will also need at least 17 inch wheels to clear the brakes as well.

Why didn't you clean the back breaks ?
If you mean why didn't he clean the paint from the zimmerman rotors, I had the same question.
The allen bolts that hold on the rear caliper is 7mm not 17mm as described at 3min 32 secs. Otherwise a great video.
he says 7, the line they use to intro their subtitles just makes it look like 17

What are the correct size rotors for a 02 s60 with AWD?? It has the 17” tire option but when looking at brake kits for this car there are 3 sizes. Short of removing the wheel caliper and all that looking for some pointers.
