Radom Fact: True tabby is made of equal parts lime, water, sand, oyster shells, and ash. The ash is a byproduct of preparing the lime, but its presence contributes to the hardening of the end product. Which is why you can see the shells in the constuction
That's kitchen midden from the Indians that were there before. All the by valves and such is the dead give away. In Florida we paved the streets before asphalt with midden.
Went to Hilton head for 2 vacation days back in 1997 the one thing that stuck out in my mind was how impeccably manicured all of the grass, bushes and vegetation was. Very pristine landscape never seen anything like it to this day.
I stayed in Hilton Head in 2019 and visited the Stoney Baynard ruins and Fort Howell. If I remember the information correctly, the smaller buildings between the main house and the chimney were slave quarters. The chimney was part of a kitchen, the walls of which were torn down by union soldiers to make platforms for their tents.
When I was a kid, I remember a legend surrounding the Baynard family crypt. For a long time, the door on the crypt would not stay on. The coffins inside would lay askew. The crypt would need repair often. Many offered supernatural explanations based on darker side of family history. SC lore is as old as the land it seems.
The area between Savannah and St John's Island just outside of Charleston are some of the best exploring areas of the country. This will no doubt be some great stuff over the coming days

I've been to Hilton Head, South Carolina one time back in the 90's. You should go to Daufuskie Island. The only way you can get there is by Farrie and you have to leave your car back at the parking lot near the dock of the Farrie. Once your on the Island you can only driving around the island on a golf cart. There's not much to do there. There are private summer homes people have there. It might be fun to explore Daufuskie Island on the golf car or walk around.
We have never been to Hilton Head. We sit here watching the video and imagining people living there back in the old days. We also love the informational signs. We need to take a family trip to Hilton Head. Awesome video and thank you.
I love Hilton Head! Only visited once, when I drover over from where I lived in Atlanta. However, I loved it. Very natural and mellow. Peaceful place, for sure!
Loving the trip, Adam. If you ever make your way back through Brunswick/St.Marys/Kingsland,GA area, I recommend Jekyll and Cumberland Islands, a ton of Historical value there.

You were soooo close to Daufuskie Island!!! You were looking at it was you were panning around the Sound from the Harbor Town Lighthouse. It is such a cool island with lots of history. It is a true back roads adventure. A must stop at some point. Thanks for sharing your adventures!
Love old cemetarys. You can learn a lot reading the grave stones. One I visited up in Northern Vermont New Hampshire, had a long line of stones in a line big to very small. It was a whole family down to small children and baby. Died in the big influenza pandemic early 1900's. Sad to read their names and ages.

Thank you so much for this video. I love History and learning about the Fort and the African American Union soldiers was wonderful. I love seeing our history celebrated and preserved in lessor known places and I’ve always been curious about the Carolinas and the Gullah culture.
This was so great. We loved that you showed the statue Out For Lunch. John Seward Johnson II is one of Joe's favorite sculptures so it was great to see one of his pieces of art that we did not know of on Hilton Head. You showed one of his most popular statues in TDW 500 when you showed Unconditional Surrender. Plus it made us happy to see that you went to the Stoney Baynard Ruins and Baynard's grave.
Very cool to see you exploring Hilton Head. I used to live next door in the Bluffton area however I now reside in Ohio where it's entirely too cold. I hope to eventually move back to the south
So excited to see you exploring South Carolina! You need to come to Charleston, it is such a beautiful city, it's literally a living museum. I am SoCal native now living here and it's one of my favorite cities, as well as Savannah. Charleston was destroyed by an earthquake, too in the late 1800's.

Awesome! I have been coming to Hilton Head throughout my lifetime, and a few of these places are definitely places I have never gone to. And sorry about the lack of access. All that money down there sure likes to keep people gated out and locked away from half of the island. I kept wondering what kind of great content you could find in such a ritzy and touristy place, and you came through wonderfully! I really look forward to seeing more of you exploring my home state in the coming days.

Freedman’s Village is where a many many run away slaves found refuge & could live free. The US Army occupied & held Hilton Head Island pretty early in the Civil War & held it. Allowing the black residents to be safe from the Confederacy. Hilton Head Island has a fascinating history.
Yay you showed the lighthouses!! I love lighthouses ❤️❤️❤️ I need to get up to Hilton Head sometime and see them both with my own eyes. Those roads with the canopy of trees are so pretty. Notice there’s a lot of history on that island and I love historical places.

When i was a child in the 1960's we would vacation every summer at Hilton Head. One year we rented the beachfront home that was once used in the filming of the movie "The Ghost and Mrs.Muir." Quite a charming house.
