Building a Celtic Roundhouse with Hand Tools: Bushcraft Project (PART 1)

  • Опубліковано 24 сер 2024
  • We build a bushcraft celtic roundhouse in the forest using hand tools only. In part 1 we collect timber resources, and cut logs ready for the foundations of the bushcraft shelter. The hand tools we will be using for this build are: axe, knife, saw, drawknife and an auger. To begin with we clear a site ready for the construction to begin. We cut a large log using the metre long silky saw. This is to be used for chopping logs. We then re-built our saw horse that we had made in the bushcraft viking house series. We hewed it flat with some wood wedges and axes. Then we made new legs for it. This was also used as a bark peeling jig. We cut 14 logs from the nearby area (all the wood in the immediate area is being forested and we had permission to use these resources). We de-barked the logs and burnt the ends of them. This is an ancient Japanese technique, which helps to make the logs more rot-resistant when they are buried in the ground. These 14 logs will become our vertical posts. The wood we are using is cedar. This is commonly used for Log Cabi building across Europe, especially Scandinavia. It is very rot resistant and although not the hardest of woods, it has proved well when we have built with it in the past. The Celts occupied what we know as Britain over 2,000 years ago. Around the year 500BC. They were incredibly resourceful people and very tribal. Their houses were known as a roundhouse. In the north of England the walls were made with stone, and in the south of Britain they were made with wood as there was more wood available. The roof was thatched and the house had a central firepit with sleeping areas around the outside. This is an important part of British and Irish History and we hope you enjoy joining us on this adventure!
In Part 2 we will continue to build the foundation and start to put together the timber frame. We will also be including cooking, feasts and more adventures! Be sure to subscribe so you don't miss an episode!

Little tip with your saws. Remove the bark where the saw will be cutting because little particles of sand dust clay and rock get caught in the bark. All these particles dull the saws teeth as you cut through the bark. If you remove the bark it’ll make your saws last a lot longer. But smashing lumbering action going on here perfect cuts. Great vids

I enjoy knowing that Celtic peoples were already beyond 'Bushcrafting!" Iron tools, decent joinery and the lot gave them a lot more shelter than today's 'outers' are willing to allow for! That star pattern for toasting the base of you foundation logs is BRILLIANT! Silky is promoting the Katana Boy Professional 1000...you and Dustin are putting it to best use! Survival Russia gave a demonstration of it last weekend in his download. I think of 'Celts' as being a multi-tribal ethnic group. Another highly interesting series.

Once you conquered the Thatching, I KNEW there would be a Round House. The archeologists on Time Team figured some of those round houses lasted 200 years, if they got regular maintenance. Time Team built a round house on the series,... Salisbury Plains... it takes ONE TON of thatch to cover the roof of a round house! Well, depending on the size. That's ambitious on your part, and I can't wait to watch this grow.
If you conquer this round house, you are half way there, to building a Pueblo Pit House ... and there were several styles throughout the ages. The Basket Weaver era would probably suit your skill set and resource materials. See if you can find a Time Team America- the first episode: Lost Pueblo Village.

That is so cool. I’ve never seen anyone build a Celtic round house. Much different than when you build a regular house LOL. Thanks for sharing

Amazing - you could have a complete history park there when you're done!
Whereas it's true that you're not using old authentic tools all the time, it's also true that you don't have a tribe of Celts to help you so it levels the field a little for you.

First, this is going to be an incredible brilliant build. Two, Dustin has a Celtic weapon that he is using as a saw. And three, that Amber has grown into a beautiful mature dog. I can't wait for the next one teachers.

in the future you can make use of the builds so much, if you make a village it could be an actual attraction where people go to camp etc

Ha, you took all the Celtic house ideas. Start buying the stone tools for the Roman era build!
And you'll have great food this time. Well done lads, well done.

Okay here is a little info from a Celt from across the pond. The roundhouses walls were a woven wicker style ranging from 2 to 4 meters (3 - 12 feet ) tall. From what I have learned the taller ones were for storing fodder for the livestock during the winter months. the roofs were like your Saxon house thatched with either straw or reeds. Some of the wicker walls were cobbed. Also, some were elevated off the ground a couple of feet and had planked floors. Some were single-family dwellings and really big ones had two or more families. So that is what I have for ya. have fun.

Your intro was hilarious. Though honestly, when you flicked your saw open, for a moment I thought you where closing the breach on a side by side shotgun (the window on my laptop was not very large so detail was lost) til you had it open and held it still. but when your friend pushed you aside and opened his I broke out in laughter. A great opening... I am looking forward to seeing more of this series. I have always wanted to build a round house mini cabin but I always had trouble figuring out the roof for such. My problem is I can only really think of 3 primary ways to go. Rafters and a soft top, Rafters with a woven and thatched roof, or break out the power tools and build a shingled roof. I look forward to seeing your answer to how to properly roof a round house.

I teach lessons on trees to elementary school students. We do "tree cookies", look at crosscut slabs and try to figure out the life history of that tree. Your opening clip is perfect, I'll be using it!

You could also leave a section of overhang on either side of the building for storage of firewood and whatever. And have access from both inside and out.
I know it would mean a bit more roofing, but might be worth it.

Enjoyed this one too. I would love to see another "Fire Pit" build, however, this time to include the stone lined pit AND air channel to feed it all done at the same time.
Maybe "Chef Dustin" could make another "Propeller Lamb" meal. I am blown away just looking at the meals he cooks....would love to try one someday!
