  • Tobogganing in the Phoenix Park Dublin after a big snowfall.
There was heavy snow across Ireland in January 1982 resulting in traffic chaos, fuel and food shortages, and the closure of schools and workplaces. However, it wasn’t all doom and gloom as many took the opportunity to enjoy the snow in their time off work and school.
‘Anything Goes’ presenters Mary FitzGerald and Aonghus McAnally joined in with the fun and games as hundreds of people, young and old, took their toboggans to the Phoenix Park. The snow slopes of the Magazine Fort in the Phoenix Park were runs for tobogganing with a range of improvised sleighs from car bonnets to plastic bags.
This ‘Anything Goes’ report was broadcast on 22 January 1982.

Remember queuing for milk & bread? I think it was 2 pints a family a day IF it arrived in Quinnsworth Kilbarrack. No school for weeks & the oil boiler kept freezing so we'd get sent home after about an hour. Leaving water along the hard snow on the road at night so it was perfect for sliding in the morning. Send me back to a time when if you hadn't broken a bone or had a permanent scar by 11, you weren't doing it right!!

I adore your channel. I was particularly delighted to discover the Brendan Behan footage. Priceless.

Can't be having fun like that anymore. Coillte would plant conifers 1 metre apart or a cycling club would have the Gardai arrest you for disturbing the deer

They weren't concerned about smartphones or computers they were much too busy enjoying life to care about modern technological devices.
