I recommend watching Mkbhd’s video on smartphone bezels, it goes into more depth than I can explain. Basically, the chin is there because there is a ribbon connector that needs to connect the motherboard and the display in order for it to work. That requires space, as the ribbon connector is always placed and one end of the display. Because a chin looks nicer than a forehead, companies generally choose the bottom of the display as the place for the ribbon connector. When the chin get’s smaller, companies are basically just pushing the connector closer and closer to the edge of the display. In apple’s case, they actually folded the display underneath itself in order to get rid of a chin. Apple worked on that process for years, and no other company has yet to build a reliable and consistent enough assembly line to do that. Next in line is samsung, who are doing that as we speak. Hope that answers you’re query!
