Strategy is similar to poker tournaments - in poker the payout is extremely top heavy - only the final table (top 9) & final 3 make all the money even if there are 500 entrants. You must play (fish) to win. I would practice the day before by just going around the lake & investigating with my electronics. You need to a rod & reel to locate fish. Spend you time locating where and at what depth the shad are using and then try to locate any structure you can in that depth zone. Then on tournament day you can just run all those way points until you find active fish feeding. The last thing is to simply embrace technology if you’re serious about winning events - many say they are but they are not because they make up excuses instead of doing what it necessary to win

I fish mostly one day events on the weekend. About 1990 I had an epiphany and started targeting better quality fish. The size fish I started weighing in more than offset catching fewer fish. I've won hundreds of tournaments since then including 2 Federation National Championships. Lunker generally pays pretty well too. When you only have 5 fish to catch you don't have to catch them very fast.

Well at this point for your first tournament of the season all I can say is good luck. Hope you find the big girls and they're ready & willing! Make sure to let us know.

Back in my tournament fishing a lot of the time big fish payed very well. So if you finished high and had big fish you had a pretty good day. 👌🎣

Thanks Randy I needed to hear that. I'm always worried about weighing in 5 and waste time from my bigger bite. 👍

Every time I've placed in a one-day event.......1 of 2 things happened. Either the day was terrible and I didn't have a limit at all by like noon, then with 2-3 hours left, I completely changed techniques and then started catching fish like crazy last hour or two.
or...... I went out and was on them off the bat, by around noon I had a solid limit, but not any kickers. So The last couple hours I would change to trying fish a big bait, or a big carolina rig, or flipping up in the thick crap..... and manage to catch a couple better ones.
    '
Only 1 tournament ever did I go out very first thing, and smash a 6lber and a 5lber right off the bat. That tournament I ened up having 4 fish that were bigger than most peopless 5 fish limit. And for the life of me, I could not get a 5th fish. With 15 mins left, I caught 2 fish near some grass on a wacky rig, saving my day and winning me about $2000.
So it just seems like whenever I've done really well; no matter how the day progressed, It still always comes down to the very last minute. Maybe it's cuz I suck lol!

Good luck tomorrow thanks for the advise on 1 day tournaments. I'm going to do more graphing for my practices instead of fishing. You don't need forward facing sonar to win

How do you figure out the high percentage technique? I’m about to try my first tournament and went to two different lakes and one of them I was getting hit on the jig a ton and the other one they wouldn’t touch it.

Everyone is fishing for points.. Table Rock is your self proclaimed ' home lake '. Everything and anything can go wrong. OWN that lake. Meaning don't go in with a swagger, but the confidence you have. I'm not telling you anything you don't already know. Tight lines my man.

And here I always thought the best way to win a tournament was to stuff the fish with rocks, lead weight, and fish filets, like those other cheaters did. How many million did they win?

    Hi Randy,
Not sure if you will read this but hope you do. Love your opinion and channel. I really hope you finish well in the tourney but your level of complain on LS an Alabama in an actual tourney is crazy......
I agree with the anti LS view but throw a bloody Alabama man!
Don't let your views hamper you. Agree or disagree the rules are the rules and understanding them is part of the game
Throw the Alabama, get a good place and we will respect you. Don't make upfront excuses, we respect your history anyway
