The moisture in the air has been causing the Traeger pellets to form a clog in my feed tube, causing me to have to take the whole thing apart. I switched to the PitBoss brand and have had no such problems. This is consistent with your water test. I have tested the flavors and cannot tell the difference.
Switch to Lumberjack pellets. They work great in my Traeger Timberline 1300.
I've used competition blend pit boss in an 80/20% mix with the Jack Daniel's charcoal pellets. That small addition of charcoal pellets really rounds out the flavor and adds the "smoky" flavor you typically miss with pellets.
Purple elephant 🐘
I have used a smoke tube. to get more smoke.
What do you think?
@@rickytinsley7890 I’m in the market for a tube smoker did it really help. I’m also fixing to buy a PitBoss
Nothing but back luck with Pit Boss competition when I first got my pellet grill. The smoke flavor is so much lower than B&B, Lumber Jack, and Bear Mountain...it's not worth the sacrifice in flavor for being cheap. Besides, I get Bear Mountain locally for $8/20# bag and B&B Championship Blend for $15/40# bag at Academy Sports.
Even the smoke produced by burning the PB pellets doesn't have that 'wood' flavor and doesn't burn your eyes at all. That's waaaay lower concentration of the smoke flavor 'particles' that can bind to your food. I honestly feel bad for people that literally don't know any better than to purchase the PB pellets because either that's the grill they bought or they get them at Wal Mart out of convenience and don't give it a second thought. I suppose there's a difference between using the grill as an appliance and being an enthusiast who cares enough to chase the additional smoke and flavor improvements that come with superior fuel.
Almost 100% of the time when somebody tells them their pellet grill doesn't have smoke flavor, they are using these substandard pellets.
Have you smoked tubes and I like them but they are hard to keep smoking. My fix was to find a very small stainless steel strainer and place the pellets in it seem to stay smoking better for me
@@johnfreeman440so you think those other pellet types provide a good smoke flavor in the meats cooked?
I had purchased Pit Boss Competition blend years ago- at least 4. I went through a period where I smoked twice it two years! I never emptied the pellets from my old Z Grill (but it was covered and it lived under cover. The remainder of the bag sat on the floor in the garage. I never once had an issue with either the grill or the pellets. They worked just fine the whole time I had them.
I finally got back into smoking and did a couple of cooks on the old Z Grill still using the old pellets. And now I purchased a new grill and used what was left of those pellets for the seasoning and the first cook. I know you'll say I was just very lucky but in reality I don't think there is any luck involved. I think I'll stick with Pit Boss.
I myself have been using PitBoss pellets, but to be truthful it's the only one I have ever used. Bought a Pit Boss smoker grill at Lowes and they sold the pellets too so I just bought them and been using them for 3 years now with no issues
Purple elephant! That’s good information, I’ve wanted to try other pellets but didn’t want to void the warranty on my Traeger! Finding out that the Pit Boss pellets reached temperature faster leads me to believe I should try them! So far my favorite smoke flavor has been Cherry! Thank you for the informative comparison!
Just got a Traeger too - did you try any other brands over the last year? What's your current favorite to use with the Traeger?
Wtf is purple elephant
Purple Elephant - Flavor is the only thing that is important when it comes to pellet brand. There are huge differences here. I suggest you spend some comparing the cooks on them. You will quickly forget about Pit Boss and some of the others. It's difficult to compare and define a winner, but you will find your top 3 and there will be a pretty large differenence in the flavor profile on them. 🍻
B&B Championship Wood pellets is what I use.
I used the Traeger pellets when I started but right now Bear Mountain is pretty much my go to.
Been looking at Lumberjack pellets as well
Im using the $5 pellets from wally mart, 100% oak and hickory blend
Just got my wife a new tabletop pellet smoker for Mothers Day. Went Lowes and got a bag of Pitt Boss comp pellets. Purple Elephant
Purple Elephant. I use Knotty Wood pellets. Just a great tasting flavor.
Lumberjack works best in my Traeger Timberline 1300. I have compared them against others, like Traeger, etc. I have watched videos of pitmasters comparing them to others, and Lumberjack pellets are preferred.
Beef/Poultry- Pecan Blend
Pork - Cherry
Seafood - Apple
If I want to tweak the flavor for pork, I sometimes mix Pecan & Cherry.
Just the video I was looking for thx!!!!!
Oh and new sub!😁😁👊👊
Purple Elephant. Great video 👍. I believe PitBoss is the best bang for your buck and they are readily available locally. I have used Bear Mountain which are good but have to get them shipped. I just recently won a bag from Knotty Wood and I really like these pellets. Thanks for sharing!
Pit Boss definitely seems to be the most available! Thanks for watching!
Pit boss competition blend smells great when burning and is mostly what I use. The classic blend gives a great color to the meat. I used hickory pellets one time and they were not very good. I just stick to Competition Blend was my favorite.
Get a gravity Grill, I made the switch and never looked back. It puts out way more flavor!! And B&B Pellets are the best.
Had I known about the gravity grills before purchasing a pellet grill I would have been all on it. I want to beat the hell out of my coworker for convincing me to get the pellet grill. I dropped $1100 on the Pitboss 1600 and I have never been more frustrated with constantly trying different methods to get more smoke flavor. Different pellets, and smoke tube, adding wood chips...nothing satisfied me. Coming from a Kamado I was just not satisfied. I had zero knowledge of the gravity grills existence until after I had my pellet grill for months. Using real lump coal and wood with the technology to control the temps is what I would have went for. It's easier than using a stick burner or Kamado and just as convenient as a pellet grill but with real smoke flavor. I really made a bad choice!
@@demondmccray8582 I hear ya, and understand 100%
i have tried most of them and keep going back to bear mountain. Cherry flavor is real good, but the competition blend is also very good. bear mountain also seems to have close to that smoke flavor.
Mostly use Pitt boss comp. Blend or hickory. 💕💕💕
The Purple Elephant and I agree with something you touched on... find a pellet that you can get reliably, is affordable (for you) and that you like the flavor it brings to your cook.
I like the knottywood plum pellets been hooked on them since mad scientist bbq reviewed them
Purple elephant. Pit boss competition still my favorite after trying many other brands and makes. Great video.
Bear Mountain work better in my Traeger Timberline. I’ve had problems with Traeger pellets attracting moisture and jamming the auger.
My favorite is still knotty wood pellets, specially the plum. Ive been using them for yrs now. Even b4 Jeremy talked about them
Recteq ultimate blend. Red oak, white oak & hickory
Knotty woods is my go to. I like to go half plum half almond.
Pit Boss Competition Blend is what I use the most! Be safe and God bless!
I have been using Cabela’s (Bass Pro) pellets after I ran out of my original purchase of Pit Boss bags (about one year). I got them “free” from points on my Bass Pro credit card. They work great. I do use a smoke tube on most serious smokes. They are priced around the same price as Pit Boss (9.99/20lb) They vary in flavors from Pit Boss. I no longer use my Bass Pro card so I’m going to give Pit Boss a try again due to your video. Love your videos, keep it up.
Guess who makes the pellet's for Cabela's......Lumberjack!
purple elephant was interesting !! Very interesting comparison .i agree with you on not needing to spend $$$ on big brands. If you ever have an oportunity to try kirkland pellets from costco vs traegar pellets....I think this would be an excellent review. kirkland are comparable to pit boss and some people believe pit boss makes them. keep up the nice videos ,you are doing a great job at it!
Purple Elephant. Started with pitboss because it was readily available, but found bear mountain recently. Seems to have a better flavor and less ash.
I have been using pit bosses I have had a good variety at Lowe’s in Utah. I also just got some bear mountain sweet BBQ 20lb for $10 at Lowe’s last weekend they were on sale so thought I would try them. Great video. I have hickory, apple, cherry, competition, and sweet BBQ I enjoy trying different pellets.
Try Lumberjack 100% Mesquite or Lumberjack 100% Hickory. Maybe even blend the 2 together. You should also be using the grills smoke mode setting.
Purple elephant..love your videos. Very informational..thank you.
Purple elephant! I was hoping to see a comparison based on smoke.
Purple elephant
My reason to NEVER run Pitboss pellets through my cooker is that 3-4 times without searching...just happened to notice there was colorful streaks in pellets.
Plastic?
I dont know Pitboss never answered me.
The other reason is I had been running their charcoal pellets and it bound and spun my auger motor.
For me personally Its not woth the savings when you can get Cabela's or Lumberjack cheap at other places. I have never had any issues with those brands.
Purple Elephant! Thanks for the help.
I go between Kingsford and Pitboss. I prefer the Kingsford brand when it’s available.
Purple Elephant. I use the pit boss also, mainly because of price and easy to get...
Right now, it's PitBoss and a few Treagar bags. Gonna try some besr Mountain and Knotty Woods
Purple elephant. Thanks for the info. Looking forward to some experimentation myself.
I have been using Kirkland brand from Costco and like it. They did not overheat like a cheaper pellet.
I was using Kirkland also but switched back to Bear Mountain. I would get wild temperature swings and flame outs even though I kept the pot clean. They seemed to work ok if it was warm outside but when the temp dropped to the 30's my troubles started even with an insulating blanket. The big difference I noticed was the size of pellets. Bear Mountain was very consistent at about 5/8" and the Kirkland was 1" or longer. For kicks I tried the water test and the Bear Mountain swelled up uniformly but the Kirkland swelled at different rates and one barely swelled at all. I may go back to them when it warms up to get rid of them but I won't buy them again.
Bear mountain is great and reasonable
My wife bought me Pit Boss Competition Blend by accident...
Best mistake she ever made!
Why so? Did you have issues?
@@skipferguson3421 no... I had told her to get Bear Mountain, but she grabbed the other one by mistake. I have used both and I prefer the Pit Boss pellets.
Purple elephant. I use Lumber Jack comp pellets with their char-hickory.
Jealous Devil Legendary FTW!
Purple elephant.
I’m curious on after you did each test, how much ash did they leave behind? I started using lumberjack because of the price, and when I retired my old Traeger grill and got a green mountain that thing is so sensitive to the ash buildup.
Looking for the pallet with the least amount of ash.
As for the water test. The denser the pellet is packed. The longer it takes water to ruin them. I know the knotty wood brand prides themselves on a dense high quality pellet.
Purple Elephant. Good job girl
Purple elephant. I use LumberJack Competition blend. Usually run about $10 or less if on sale for 20 pound bags right down the street from me.
I’ve had a hard time finding those locally but everyone that uses them seems to love them!
Good results so far with a blend of Pit Boss Competition and Charcoal pellets...Lumberjack pellets have worked well too.
Purple Elephant 😂
Mazie you saved me several hours. I'm grateful and on the way to Walmart. I have always used Traeger pellets buying them from Homedepot 4 at a time for the discount. Now HD is charging $19.95 for one 20lb bag. I let you know if I find the meat is not as tasty. This past 3 weeks I've gone through 7 20lb bags stocking my freezer. I'm cooking 6 pork buts today so the freezer should be full for as bit. I appreciate your input. Happy Thanksgiving John Lee Portwood Gibson
Awesome!! That’s a lot of pork butts 😳. Thanks for checking out my video!
Purple Elephant.
My son in law and I have been having this conversation over the last while. I suggested he use Pit Boss because of the price and the fact Pit Boss is a good name.
I am a Traeger person and very analytical so Maze I agree with the way you approached this comparison and I agree with your conclusion. Thank you for that.
One point I will make is that while I have been using my Traeger for two plus years, I have a very difficult time distinguishing flavours. Hickory versus Cherry etc; I cannot honestly tell the difference.
I would appreciate your comment.
Thank you.
Purple Elephant I use mostly Pit boss because of cost. I want to try the Royal Oak 100% Charcoal pellets. I like that charcoal taste.
I used to deliver Royal Oak to a chicken spot...that chx was delish!!!
Purple Elephant Thx for the video!
Purple Elephant.
Very informative video, and even some of the comments are usefull
For me some have an empty smoke odor. I don’t know how to describe it but I guess it’s a low quality base wood I smell. I don’t get this with the Lumber Jack pellets (any variety) or the Knotty wood pellets. Recently, I’ve been trying the pit boss hickory blend…and I’m not getting that empty smoke odor. Of all the pellets I’ve tried over the years, to me the Kingsford and Traeger are the ones have the most empty smoke odor. As far as the flavor they impart on the meat, honestly I can’t really ever tell a huge difference that makes me prefer one pellet over another. I do like a pellet that is NOT a comp blend…they all smell a bit too sweet and the PB hickory blend and Knotty wood pellets to me have much more distinctive and strong odor while cooking.
Pit boss I did a look up made in Wisconsin they say they use all wood no fillers
I'm using Pit Boss pellets. Before getting a pellet smoker I used traeger in the smoke tube but noticed when leaving them in the bag they would pick up moisture between uses quick.
Purple elephant. Love what you are doing. I alone like the pit boss pellets.
I always use Pit Boss competition blend
Purple Elephant, thank you for your research and info 🥰
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!
Great informative video! Loved it! Not as much as my grandma loved your jeans though.
Tell grandma thank you 🥹
Purple elephant Wonder if you would do a blind taste test between 2 or three products. Lumbarjack, bear mountain and pit boss.
I use my kettle with Spider Venom or Auto Kamado a lot. Anyway, I put my GMG Davy Crockett in storage for 2 years on my Louisiana patio with Pit Boss pellets still in the hopper and auger. My stored pellets were in 5 gallon plastic buckets with lids. I decided to start using my DC again. I just plugged it in and updated the firmware. It started up with no issues at all so I think you are right on with the moisture issue. Did you do an ash test. I am curious if higher ash content can attribute to hopper fires that many have especially with smaller pellet grills like the ZGrills Cruiser and the Pit Boss model.
Purple Elephant, thanks for sharing the information
Academy has Jax for 15 bucks. I mostly use Limber Jack or Knotty wood brand. I do use others to experiment though.
Purple elephant. I have always owned and used Traeger. Currently have a Ironwood650. Although this week picked up a PIt Boss Pro Series 3 1600 from Lowes. Still need to put it together, but once I have and ready to do burn and initial cooks, I am gonna try Pit Boss pellets. Our pellet selection in Canada is not as robust as USA. Have used off brand pellets before, but find them less reliable. Did just purchase a 40lb bag of Costco pellets. Anyone used them? Who makes them?
Pink Unicorn ! 🤪
purple Elephant i think all the smoking pellets about samei may try the charcoal pellets next time just bought a pit boss 1230 useding pit boss the competition blend i'm getting enough smoke flavor if cooked at lower temperature from 180 to 225 no higher your pellets will burn slower put more smoke flavor if you think you like more smoke flavor run a smoke tube and if you run a higher temperature use a smoke tube
Purple elephant. Very interesting. I use the pit boss as well. I enjoyed the vid.
Thanks for watching!
Hahaha Purple Elephant, I stick with the pit boss blends. Mainly the hickory and competition blends.
Purple elephant , you rock girl Love your videos 😊
Curious as to why you didn't have Knottywood on trial here? I've found the plum, whilst not to my liking in terms of taste, to be very effective at imparting smoke flavour
Great video you answered a question I had about treager pellets, rumors of clogged augers.
I a taste test is objective but a flavor test of the array of pellets you have would be interesting.
Ps: great presentation!!!
Lumberjack pellets are my favorite! Sadly RK stopped selling them so I’ve resorted to Bear Mountain until I do a mass order for Lumberjack online or get in on a group buy.
I have trouble getting those locally too but I’ve heard only great things about them!
RK is selling Lumberjack pellets again, but limited flavors. I can't get Pecan Blend at the one near me. I get them at Blain's Farm and Fleet.
Purple elephant how much dust was in the bottom of the bags? Have you tried the recteq pellets or the Cabela’s brand pellets
Bear mountain is available in tractor supply type stores around 14.99 for 40 lb. bags and on sale for 9.99.
That’s good to know! I’ll have to keep an eye out.
I bought a ton of these when it went on sale at my tractor supply too! I had no idea how much I would use or which flavor was best so i went crazy and bought everything they had. Its been over a year now and I’m finally curious about what flavors i can get from other brands
pit boss hickory and coal.my go to
Or knotty wood pellets
Great info thanks you 👍
Thanks for watching!
What I would like to see, was a taste test, not watching them dissolve in water which pellets have the most smoky flavor?
I would assume that result would be different for every person that tasted something from each pellet. I guess you’ll have to do that tasty research on your own 😃
Purple Elephant. You Rock
purple elephant. i really enjoy your channel. fun and informative. you are an amazing host!
Purple elephant I use pit boss also
Thanks for watching 😌
What about royal oak charcoal pellets
What does purple elephant taste like
I am pretty sure that means the pit boss has other things added to them making them not ideal for smoking
jealous devil and royal oak are pretty good
Good video thank you
Purple elephant! I’m from the Show-Me state, I need to see the raw data! LOL I’ve used many of the brands but have enjoyed the hard wood pellets from Sam’s Club the best.
I don’t live by a Sams Club or I would give those a try too!
@@bbqbymazie Next time I’m in Utah I’ll drop some off
I love this channel. Purple Elephant
Pellets are so extensive in Sweden 290sek for 9kg.
I wish I could ship you some!
I prefer bear mountain like the smoke i get from them
Purple elephant, good information there, appreciate it
Thanks for checking it out!
To be fair Academy always has Bear Mountain for $9/20lb just a heads up.
That’s an awesome deal! I don’t have one local to me but that’s good to know!
knotty wood or cookin pellets are goog
Purple Elephant
Apologies to any fans of charcoal pellets, but I've found the LJ char-hickory pellets, to add ZERO smoke flavour.
purple elephant haha what almost a year later good video thanks
Thanks so much for watching!
Purple elephant
More smoke ? Try a smoke tube
Lumberjack and Cookin’ Pellets are the two I run the most. I am a fan of the Jealous Devil lump coal, but not their pellets. Everything else you have there has a ton of non-wood binders.. no thanks.
