Wow! Eric Harland has the most amazing touch and control of his performance! Everything is orchestrated and modulated to bring out the essence of what the music is saying. This is super interesting because it is a compilation of his solos so in a way it seems he's overplaying, cause when you watch them live his interplay and support for the other musicians is also readily apparent. He is really a game changing drummer, his concept is super musical! Thanks! Blessings!
Keep in mind that throughout that whole first solo, Eric is tapping in 3 with a whole different bass drum to a beat that probably most people are feeling in 2. And he still keeps it going throughout various ridiculous fills. Insane
I picked up the Prism cd used before a local record store went out of business. An amazing album! The Kevin Eubanks tracks are my personal favorites but all of it flows. Well done
this video is proof that Eric harland is not a jazz drummer. "Highlights" videos are for football post-games and other TV hype bullshit. Who would ever want to watch a highlights video of a Miles 2nd quintet concert? Dave should know this.
would have rather hear this music without a drum solo going on, not feeling it!, no doubt an amazing drummer. (jeeez ! unbelievable!) but music should be more than away to show off your drum chops
Maybe people hear something I don't but this just doesn't sound all that great to me. I can see that he is clearly a skilled drummer, but to me it just doesn't flow or fit with the music. Anyone want to enlighten me as to if this a style of playing or music? Maybe I'm just a white boy LOL!!
- you may not like it because there is no context. its highlights from a concert. like watching a drama/movie and skipping to the scenes where people are shouting at each other and fighting! - But in the end its music. with music if you listen to it and it doesn't grab you, move on thats all..Like your taste on woman or men (romance). nothing to really 'GET' or Understand.. - personally i love the sound. [Snare, dynamics and fluency between everything] ANd the feeling [great intensity and urgency yet flexable like nature] And then Rhythmically [i cant even explain how great that is...] if you dont feel it, listen to something more simple (whatever that means)
I feel the same. there's a lot of notes and a lot of brain, but I miss the "heartfelt" part. I like musicians smiling when they're playing, not having that suffering face :)
Listen to the way it is phrased. The first section is phrased in 12/4, or 3 bars of 4. Later it transitions into 2 bars of 4 and a bar of 3/8. In other words - once you understand the phrasing you will hear exactly his intention and how he is playing around the beat. This is not black/white, I am white and can hear what he's doing - so can Dave Holland. E.H. is a genius.
You're just not getting it I'm afraid...in this band the drummer can be like a keyboard or guitar soloist.....it's not the traditional use of ensemble drums...the other players are all capable of keeping the time constant...it's a wonderful departure from standard band dynamics.....open your head to it...and enjoy the persussion mastery.....peace.
the one and only! Fantastic ideas . His playing always makes me smile and want to play and practice! Such an inspiring musician and a drummer!😊

This is Eric Harland's gig people! Let the man please the audience who have clearly come to see this genius work his magic!! Stop hatin'
He has evolved beyond what is a "normal" drum solo.

Jazz suffers from bad audio these days. It's unfortunate. Many guys out there that could prevent it.

I can't hear anything but drums...
I know eh. its great!
Eric is pretty much my favourite drummer, but I like hearing him interact with the other musicians just as much I like to hear him solo.
Favourite drummer eh? U obviously haven't heard joey jordison...
yarpyarp85 Joey is just an average metal drummer, nothing to write home about, Eric here is a master of his craft, two completely different worlds...
DrumzR4Real
I can't disagree more joey is a master of all styles, I recently saw him playing post bop in a tony williams tribute band!
is this music!!? I don't get any of it. Sorry.

You do realize this is his solo section right? There's a song then there's solos that's just the way tunes go. This is his
too top heavey is when you use to much of the same sound no stories of melody and rythems Happier new ear..!
That ride need to send back man horrid noise it makes

I agree, he needs to chill the fuck out.
