That vault debacle could have caused far worse injuries e.g. Elise Ray. It's an event that hinges on perfect timing and precision, so I wonder, did they find out who was responsible for setting it up 5 cm too low? Nineteen athletes had vaulted, and several had fallen, before one of them realised what was wrong, and she stood her ground until they checked. It had far reaching consequences for the medal positions.
They never actually said who was truly responsible for it, but if it works the way the sport I officiate, it would be the entire vault crew- especially the chief of the event- who were responsible. I officiate track and field and whatever event I work, the entire crew examines the venue (I specialize in throws and horizontal jumps). We ensure the sector lines for the landing area are set to the exact specifications required, the protective cage is of proper design and quality, the markings for the boards are proper, etc. We double check and triple check EVERYTHING- and sign off before competition that it has been fully vetted. Why it wasn’t done here is a mystery- and a travesty.
NO ONE deserves millions of dollars for doing a SPORT- not a single one. It’s exactly the reason it’s so expensive for fans to come watch- and why fewer and fewer do.
@@saragrant9749 You are right, the footballers and the tennis players don't deserve salaries in millions of dollars for what they do and certainly not tens and hundred of millions of dollars or euros moved in the so-called transfers. That is just money laundry.
Hola isa. Genial tu video, me encanto, hubo muchas cosas en Sydney, y el escandalo despues de 10 años sigue...... Uno de tus mejores videos. FELICIDADES ISA :)
That whole vault situation was ridiculous- how do you make a mistake that big at the Olympics?! To me there was one more scandal- when certain athletes took off their medals while on the podium- because they were silver instead of gold. Many other athletes have been stripped of their medal for doing just that and it should have happened here too. No matter how upset you are- you just don’t do that.
@@prcelani absolutely yes. The IOC has done exactly that to many athletes who have demonstrated such poor sportsmanship. This wasn’t rude, it was a complete act of disrespect towards the games themselves. It sets a terrible example for others and does not in any way represent the purpose of athletics. If you want to be angry or frustrated about not getting what you want, you should do it outside of the arena, and certainly not barely off the podium. My opinion will never change on that, and is one of many reasons I have absolutely no respect for that country.
@@saragrant9749 You just hate Russia. I see you on every comment section of a Russian gymnast, HATING on them. You don't respect athletes but bash them instead. Just because your precious Americans didn't medal at the competition doesn't mean Russia needs their medals striped away. You obviously haven't met an Eastern European in your lifetime, We are just like that. But at the end of the day they have the silver and multiple golds and that's that.
@@prcelani I have no problem with Russian athletes. I have a problem with athletes from ANY country who disrespect their sport and the spirit of the Olympic Games. I cheered when Aliya Mustafina won bars gold in London- particularly knowing how hard her road back from the knee injury was. When she repeated in Rio, it cemented her as one of the legends of the sport. After her fall in AA competition in Atlanta, I was happy to see Khorkina get a gold on bars- her definite specialty. In 2020 I had no problem with them winning team gold after the US had its problems earlier on with Simone- they came through and earned it in the end. WHAT I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH, is the mentality that Russians are somehow superior to all and therefore the only ones deserving of a medal. People like you are always complaining that a Russian athlete was more deserving if they get beaten for a medal, and it’s rubbish. The athletes who HIT their routine- who perform to the best standard- are the ones who most deserve it regardless of country of origin. The situation aforementioned with the medals being yanked off was an act of complete disrespect to the Olympic spirit, and should have been handled the same as it has been in every other sport in history. I also feel China should have been banned from the Olympics for a quad after the age scandal hit. I don’t begrudge them being upset but THAT IS NOT THE PLACE TO SHOW IT!! Young athletes watch, idolize and emulate, and therefore these athletes are (rightly) expected to behave appropriately. That WAS NOT. If you want to talk bias and bigotry, look in the mirror and at fellow posters who constantly belittle anyone who beats a Russian athlete. You say Eastern Europeans are just like that? I disagree. I HAVE met many, including several Russians through officiating a sport myself at the elite level- and they have been kind, courteous and considerate to those around them and very supportive and respectful to us officials and the competition they are participating in. One Russian lady was very patient with me as I attempted to figure out how to pronounce her name in some sort of understandable fashion- and had quite a chuckle with me about it. Gymnastics in particular seems to be where the high and mighty attitude comes out in an ugly fashion.
They did get team bronze- several years later after China was discovered to have lied about the age of at least one athlete. They were stripped of bronze and it was given to the US- the rightful holders.

I love Korkhina. She was ROBBED that year. The entire vault series was done on an apparatus 2 inches too effing short breaking her concentration.
A whole bunch of people were robbed, absolutely. Why they didn’t restart that a day or so later I’ll never understand.
They didn't restart because of money and TV coverage.
_These_ are the athletes who deserve all those millions of dollars, *not* the football and basketball players!

It was definitely a bit rude (although I understand why they did so) but stripping the medal off them? Hell no.
