This is a speed run of New Super Mario Brothers 2, played and recorded on a modified 3DS that supports direct capture.
It uses the warp cannons on Worlds 1, Mushroom and Flower to complete the game in a really fast time.
A huge improvement over my previous year old upload by nearly 85 seconds. This is mainly thanks to newer strats and even a new trick that enables flying at fast speed equivalent to P-Dashing.
As you see at the start of the video, there is the SDA stat id. This run is getting published to SDA and it's the second ever 3DS run on the site. The description will be updated with downloadable links and even watch the run at 60 frames per second (UA-cam is 30 frames).
Timing:
Starts when I move Mario on the World Map screen
Ends when Mario touches the final big red switch.
Speed Runs Live style timing starts earlier (A button on File select and is roughly 51 seconds longer than SDA style timing)
Basic knowledge.
The somersault jump is unique as it is one block higher than the regular jumps. I use this on Worlds W1-1 and W6-5.
Doors, while it's faster in-game time to touch the very edge of the door, it's faster in real time to try and enter as close to the middle as possible.
Fireballs are used on one stage to keep my Super Leaf in reserve for later on. It's the only NSMB game to have a fixed rate of fire, go right next to a wall and mash the fireball button, you'll probably only get 2-4 fireballs out after a second.
Picking up the Star not only makes the plumber invincible but it also increases his max speed. The most notable examples are Mushroom-1 and Flower-A
Flagpole: As long I don't hit the very top (1-UP) the score pops up from the bottom and rises to the very top. Then Mario/Luigi performs their victory dance and enters the castle.
Vertical auto scrolling sections (Mushroom-B and Final Battle), the game only load up objects when the camera is nearby to that area. For example I purposely used a Super Leaf reserve to show exactly where I am off-camera, as I didn't move for ~ 5 seconds the checkpoint is finally loads up and I hit the checkpoint without moving.
The optimisations on both vertical auto scrolling sections are very tight due to the nature of waiting for the camera to load up the object/platform I need to use to progress further into the game.

Does Any% mean that you can glitch and thake shortcuts to complete the whole game without doing everything needed to get 100%?
Yes.
The any% run is where you do whatever it takes to get to the end of the game as fast as possible, acquiring or ignoring items as you see fit. This can be considered the "default" category.

Great run my friend. I just finished this game, did 100%. And it's a great game, the hate it gets for being a lame cash-in certainly isn't deserved. Why change a winning formula. I really recommend this one for platformer fans. I hope the next 2d handheld Mario has a Mario World vibe to it, with a overworld similar to Mario World and with a ton of secrets, that would be awesome. :)

what exactly do you do to get the kill at mushroom-2 to get the pipe faster? i cant seem to hit with the fireball over the descending wall :(
I was spamming fireballs and crossing my fingers that it hits the enemy. It only saves ~0.5 seconds and the actual intention is to keep the Leaf in reserve for a later stage.
So if I didn't kill the enemy, I can still take a hit and keep the leaf power up.

Great run! I had a question about the flagpoles. So I noticed that you reach the flagpole in the center, so the flag goes up halfway and Mario goes down halfway. Why not reach the flagpole at the bottom so the flag barely moves at all?
Reaching the flagpole at the bottom is not the fastest.

Awesome run of a not so awesome game. Really wish this would have been a 3DS Wario platformer... the whole collect coins/greed thing is Wario's shtick, after all. And, that music. Yeesh.

I got a second hand Black European 3DS from ebay back in July 2012 and I sent that to America (Salt Lake City) to get it modified.
Yes, the system has to be physically modified to support direct feed recordings.

Yes that is correct.
You should watch my faster run which was done in 26:39 as it does not use the W1-1 checkpoint for a power-up.
Never mind, it doesn't slow the game down that simply was because you got the power up from the checkpoint itself
I think you could shave some time off if you didnt grab the top of the pole on all of the levels it takes some time to slide down the pole so the closer to the ground the better
Mario only jumps off from the goal pole when the score counter next to the pole raises to the very top. It always starts at the same position no matter where Mario touches it (unless it's the very top which is a 1up and I think that is slower).

Yeah, the 1up is about 1/3 of a second slower than hitting anywhere else on the flag pole.

Why not try to jump as low as possible onto the flag pole? Going to the middle doesn't make sense to me :/

why on mushroom 2 do you swim so slow? you could use tanooki suit to swim straight up to enemies and take them out. that would complete it much faster. sorry if this is wrong but i dont really play that much.
also you could swim past some enemies who are under moving platforms.

First comment response:
1) For starters it's an autoscrolling stage, you can 'swim slow' and not lose time.
2) Transformation pauses: There is an Urchin I kill off-screen at 8:15.
Route A) Take Fire Flower -> hit Urchin off screen -> Use Super Leaf reserve in Mushroom Ghost = 2 transformations
Route B) Take Fire Flower -> take damage from Urchin -> Use Super Leaf reserve in Mushroom Ghost = 3 transformations
That Urchin guarding the pipe is impossible to hit with a tail spin ASAP strats without taking damage.

Mushroom B stage? No way you can shave a few seconds off, other stages, 6-A is improvable.

Another thing I can save time on is having the grand total coin counter at: 9,999,999.
If you watch 1-Tower, 1-cannon, Mushroom-Cannon, Flower-Cannon and 6-Tower.
Before the save screen pops up, the grand total coin counter has to be updated first.
Now with the absolute max counter, you can skip those parts (saving 2-4 seconds overall).

For W6-Bowser's Castle, yes I took damage on purpose.
The final boss battle was done in a way to take advantage of 3D mode.
