Thank you! Can I have your thoughts please? What is your opinion on using silicone grease instead of lithium or using blue marine grease? I have a few different greases here but no lithium, which I've used in the past for several things...Also, I read about a go-kart racers trick to lubing his chains to make them last longer. He takes oil, I think engine oil of some kind, and heats it up in a container and melts a certain amount of parrifin wax in it, I can't remember the ratio I'll have to Google it again, and soaks a clean chain in it for a short time and then removes the chain and let's it drip for awhile. He says that the wax helps seal the oil in the chain and keeps it in there and lubed for longer periods of time. I've never tried it but maybe thought you have or have heard of it. I'm not sure if it would be a good throttle cable lube but if not it might be good for other things. I recently took the throttle lever off of an old tiller and unbolted the lever from the bracket and it seemed like the lever had been lubed with a waxy substance and still operated easy and smooth. It could have just been old grease but it seemed thicker. Just wondering if melting parrifin wax in oil would make a good long lasting lube for some things. Have you ever heard of this?
Hello Jeff thanks for your comment. I'm not real sure about parrifin wax in oil as I have never used it myself. I would think that with a throttle cable or something where there wouldn't be a lot of heat that it may work fine, but with something like a go kart chain I would think the heat from the constant moving parts would melt the wax defeating its purpose of locking in the oil. For a job like this, such as the cable assembly I would think any grease you have would work fine to keep the parts lubricated.
pwcundiff Thanks for the reply. I made up some of the paraffin wax lube if you'd like to try it for some things. There's many UA-cam videos about it. The way I did it is melt a box of Gulf paraffin (from Kroger) in an aluminum foil pan and added lamp oil (about 1/3 as much as the wax) until I could wipe it across a butter knife blade without the wax flaking off. It should wipe smoothly and keep a waxy/oily film going as you go back and forth. After I got it to where I wanted it I added about 8 oz of mineral oil and mixed it and let it set up. I'm not really sure how good it will be yet or where all it could be used but it was cheap to make and supposedly stays cleaner and repels water well so we'll see....
Funny I was looking to work on my lawnmower throttle cable and found this site, I have a 63 Chris-Craft 20' with the vinyl top.
Thank you!
