During the pandemic, I cut my own hair, stopped coloring it, wearing makeup or jewelry, doing my nails. Not only did I save tons of money, I found that I love, love, love my "new" natural grey hair. At age 64, I no longer need to dress up and my lifestyle allows me to be casual and comfortable. Since I have no spouse or children, I do what I want when I want how I want!

I've never gotten my nails done and the last time I went to the salon for a haircut was 2012. I used to dye my greys but that was years ago. Yesterday, I took a bubble bath, trimmed my nails, exfoliated, and then cooked a nice meal. 🌮 🌮

One of my favorite conversations with a grandchild - I quit coloring my hair when I turned 59. My hair was quite white at this point. My young grandson asked about my hair, and I commented I quit coloring it. His response - I looked more like a Grandma than a Mommy. i just laughed and said "Well, I AM a Grandma." I had 6 grandchildren at this point in time - was comfortable in my "granny look." Grandma to 8 grands now.

It’s been 10 plus years since I dyed my hair. I no longer wear makeup because of all the toxic chemicals. The money I saved I use to go rock climbing, hiking and yoga. At 57 I feel great and live my life the way I see fit without caring what others think or say.

Something many don't really think about. Most of us just brush, floss, rinse and run. I've had very few dental issues in my lifetime. But after I turned 60 things changed. This year I'll be paying out over $12k for dental surgeries and bone replacement. Please make sure to keep your dental needs met as part of any health and beauty regimen.

Hey Kate, my son is living in Japan so last year went over there to visit him
When we were riding the trains and meeting with his friends, I realized how the women there
Are much more relaxed in regards of their beauty and fashion habits
They dress in simple, basic color like black, white, and gray. I didn’t see any women with their nails done. They were all natural.
When talking with the women there, I realized how much less pressure there is to look unique and totally put together
Using beauty products and procedures .
I felt like the women there were less competitive in terms of looks- this made me wake up to the fact about
Just how pressured we are every day to constantly buy new beauty products due to intense marketing
In the USA that makes us feel less than if we don’t have every latest product .

It's the government that sets that tone, the blue, black, grey etc. So while it is extremely controlling, there is a huge benefit to it. Same when they started implementing school uniforms for kids.

While visiting a public washroom lately, it occurred to me, that there were receptacles for needles, but nothing for women, whose period may have arrived unexpectedly. I am past this stage of life , however, is it a cost factor or simply, ignoring womens needs ? It has been years, but there used to be tampon dispensing machines and a disposal container. This to me is just as important as the pink tax. I would be interested in feedback from women who think this is important.

I made a decision to stop coloring my hair at age 57 (10 years ago in September). I had colored my hair auburn for many years and I loved the color, but was tired of the every three week trip to my hairdresser and then the bleeding dye on my towels and sheets. It was a really painful year as the line of demarcation was severe…I ended up getting a pixie cut to reduce the transition time. I had one more haircut to eliminate the rest of the colored ends, and then that was it. I have not been to a hair salon since… I cut my own hair now. My hair is a platinum silver color and who knew it would be so pretty??? I spent YEARS freaking out every time my roots started to show. Now I have all white luxury sheets because my hair doesn’t bleed!

Can't remember the reason why red dye always bleeds. Went auburn once and didn't like the washed out version after it bled out. Went back to dark brown. When growing it out, there was a "crayon" that you could apply to the new growth to blend the grey. Used it for 2 months then gave myself a brushcut, 1 inch long. Best decision ever.

I dyed my hair for decades. Then in 2014 I lost all my hair from chemotherapy. When it grew back, it was a lovely white - at the age of 45! It has since darkened a bit to various shades of grey, and I wear it proudly. So many benefits - financial, less chemicals, and believe it or not, more self-confidence!

I am 62 and have been single most of that time. I stopped coloring my hair during the pandemic, started doing my own nails and cut my makeup and skin care routine down by more than half. I feel less stress not having to get to all those differnt appointments! My favorite girl dinner, toasted english muffin with a slice of cheese, or a baked potato with cheese and bacon.

This video is exactly where I have been since 2018 and I have been feeling so alone! You are the first person that I know of to address it. The most pressure that I get is from other women! Friends, family members and acquaintances that feel like they have the right to tell me that I need product in my hair, I SHOULD get this trendy new doohickey (remember the stupid Stanley cup craze?), insisting we go as a group to this concert or have meetings at restaurant and then act bothered if I don't place an order. Thank you thank you Kate. I feel so validated. Sniff. Oh and last nights dinner was a beef stick, a scrambled egg and some sauerkraut. 👍

      @KateKaden  7 днів тому +5

This comment just made my entire weekend! You are not alone. I'm so glad we can talk about this. Thank you for sharing with me. I appreciate you!!!!

    •  7 днів тому +6

      You are not alone.
I have done those things for most of my life. I have been criticised for them, by so many people, including people I don't know, been told that I have psychological and mental issues that I don't hear those criticisms anymore. I just live my life on my own terms.
Nobody else, but you, can define who you are.
No, you are not alone, and you are a beautiful person inside/out.

I love being an independent thinker! I only do what I want to do when it comes to grooming rituals. I still do plenty of them, as far as I'm concerned, but nothing I see as pointless or a waste of my money, which is limited for things like that. Ramit Sethi says the same kind of thing that Kate does, about saving money on the things we don't especially value so that we can spend bigger on the things we really do value. It's just prioritising, really, and it disappoints me that women are too often the first to criticise other women for their spending and saving decisions, instead of being quietly supportive.

Thank you Kate!! I could be your granny!😅 Married for decades to a man who loves his food - a real meat&potatoes guy. At my age, cooking isn’t as easy for me - arthritis, etc. (And tbh, I’m SICK of it)!😂 LOVE your “girl dinner” advice. I realized that I have been doing this for a while, now. I will still cook - BUT now I have ‘trained’ him to do all the prep work - the slicing, dicing - (basically, I have made him my sous chef). Then all I have to do is assemble it, which is more than enough for me now - but I make enough for a small army! Fortunately he’s good about eating leftovers - and I do my girl dinners. It’s been working great! I hope this helps some other tired granny out there! Love U‼️🙋‍♀️🥰❤️‼️

Great topic Kate! Hugs to Kaden, I am 64 now. In my 20's I got my hair cut and coloured every 5 weeks. I got my fake nails done every week. I went to a tanning salon a few times a week. I dressed in all the latest fashions and wore frightningly high heals all the time. I couldn't take the garbage down the hall without putting on makeup. When I turned 31 my hair stylist mentioned I was going grey at the temples. That simple statement made me rethink everything. I stopped doing all of that. I had nails like plastic wrap from wearing fake ones so long. I had a chronic fungal rash from laying in tanning beds. My body is now covered in moles from it too. I have miss-shapen feet from the heels. I quit wearing makeup and getting my hair done. I saved many thousands of dollars. I didn't cut my hair for 30 years. In 2021 I got it cut and coloured lavender just to celebrate my 60's Now I wear it short cause it suits me better but I let it go back to grey. I might look better with all the trappings but I feel confident in my authenticity, and no longer feel the need to be a 3 dressed up like a 9. Oh, and I sometimes have oatmeal, blueberries and yogurt for my dinner!

Kate, great tips. I worked at a job where my hands were very noticable. I kept my nails done all the time, polished, manicured. But now am retired. Do housework, yard work, etc. I only need clean, trimmed nails. I do my own polish and manicure when needed now. These are good tips to think about when seasons of our life change.

I color my own nails as well. I am also positively showing my four girls, that I am embracing my own beauty and aging. Thanks for this video!!

  • @danasmith8292
    @danasmith8292 7 днів тому +19

This video really spoke to me. As I have aged, I automatically started colouring my hair and getting foils and wearing contacts etc because I was prettier when I did those things. I didn’t even think twice about it. Aging women are made to feel that they must do whatever possible so they look younger. Why? Part of aging is getting grey hair and wrinkles. Why wasn’t I accepting my physical changes in my 50s? But then Covid happened and I started working from home. And after a few months, I thought, I don’t really see too many people and I actually don’t care if my hair is going gray. So I stopped the colouring and foil and saved $170 every six weeks. And I was OK with just wearing glasses. And I haven’t gone back to any of those things. Because I realized I was doing them for other people and because society promoted it. I may colour my hair again in the future or I may not. I love that the choice is just up to me. if anyone were to think less of me because I don’t colour my hair anymore, is that a person I need in my life anyway? Thanks for this video today.

These past couple of years or so I’ve just been simply trying to simplify many areas in my life. I get highlights in my blond hair but only go to a salon 3 times a year because it works for my budget and it’s easier on my time schedule. Also, tonight’s supper will simply be wild rice, beans, carrots and I might open a jar of pickles, lol. I like to cook and make well put-together meals but sometimes you gotta go simple. 😊

5:00 I experimented with my hair once during my early 20's, but never bothered dying it in mid 30's when it started getting gray. Recently, a male dentist I went to asked me, after the treatment, and out of the blue, why I don't duy it (rude!). I tried to keep it casual, and answeared "because I don't wanna".

This video definitely resonates with me. I’m fairly low maintenance, never had a manicure that I didn’t do myself. I have been dyeing my hair myself. Having fine thin hair I get two colorings out of a box I made sure I bought on sale. At a point where I want to grow out my grays now. I eat out only a few times a year, if a friend suggests a pricey restaurant (checking menu on line) I have no problem declining. Not in my budget. ❤️❤️❤️

I started highlighting my hair at about age 50. After a couple of years, my husband told me he liked it better natural. That was all it took to stop. I’ve never looked back and saved a bunch of money. Stopped acrylic nails when I retired. While I do occasionally miss them, I don’t miss how badly they harmed my nails or the money I was spending. Lastly, “girl dinner”? I love it. Hubby and I eat our big meal for lunch. We don’t eat much dinner. My favorite go to is a sliced apple with peanut butter.

Cook 2x/week, otherwise do light meals, including cheese sticks, pb&j on crackers, olives, apples, berries, etc. It's more than satisfying. After a near death experience thanks to a rare autoimmune disease and months of chemo I was left with very little hair. As it came back in I was just so happy to actually HAVE hair. I didn't feel the need to cut, color and style it any longer. Eventually I did buy some box color which I had never done before, it turned out great. I use the cheapest color they sell at Walmart, wear my hair pulled back, and very rarely wear makeup. Not only do I save tons of money, I save so much precious time!!!😉

All of them resonates with me. As I also live alone. I don’t really put a lot of effort into looking good for anyone. I’ve had friends suggest to me that I should wear make up even if it’s just a bit of lippy and get my hair done and all that to be more attractive to men. But I know they mean well but it’s not really important to me. I occasionally have girl dinner even when my mother comes to visit me sometimes if neither of us could be bothered cooking particularly when we have just come back from a day out and have had lunch. We might have something simple like toast or eggs on toast. And saying no when you can’t afford something or its not in the budget is very important.

Kate! Great topic! I have been letting go of the feeling of obligation on this very subject for the last 5 years. I used to have all the skin products, hair products, waxing, make-up, clothes, etc and feel naked if I left my home without looking a certain way. Covid stopped all of that. It took some time to eliminate products and procedures but today, I don’t wear make-up, use minimal face moisturizer, keep my hair short and have a small wardrobe of clothes that are comfortable not stylish. I save money, time and have realized that other people don’t care what I look like because they are too worried about themselves to notice me! I also think it is healthier not putting all those products in our bodies. 😊

This video made me chuckle because just like you, I haven't been to a salon in a little over one year. I used the drugstore dye 3 times already to cover my roots. I know they are not the best quality but, hey, they work. And, my hair is almost down to my waist now. Wavy and wild, lol. I haven't received these many compliments on my hair for years. Even young girls compliment me🤭. I think we're onto something here ❤

Interesting conversation. I’ve never spent hardly any money on my looks-my makeup consists of lipstick and until recently never went to salons, but now i go three or four times a year for pedicures because i can’t cut my toenails myself anymore…but when you got to the cooking part…that was me! (when i had kids at home). Spent so much time and money cooking and i did equate that with my femininity and being a good mom. Should have done a lot more “girl dinners” before i was an empty nester. I do now though!

There was a song in the 1933 musical Roman Scandals which had the following lyrics:
    Keep young and beautiful
It’s your duty to be beautiful
    Keep young and beautiful
If you want to be loved.
Sadly almost a century later, that attitude still persists.
I stepped off the beauty industry bandwagon twenty years ago and never looked back. It’s just so liberating to not have to live up to other people’s expectations.

Thank you for making this video. I agree with you on all of this. My hair is getting really grey lately, and people comment on it. It really hurts 😢 I have never dyed my hair before. And I also don't wear makeup because of allergies etc. My mom still cuts my hair. I couldn't find a hairdresser, that knew how to cut curly hair, so they cut it way too short. It's still expensive to be a woman. Contraceptives and stuff for your period etc.

Kate, you have been such an inspiration to me today! Im almost 68 and have "blonded" my hair with heavy highlights faithfully for years...and Im tired of doing it! I always hated my natural hair color (and with age wondering what "other" color may be mixed in it) but Ive reached the point I dont think I care anymore! Plus all the money I spend on it! So, Ive been thinking about going more "natural" soon (or at least giving it a try) If I end up hating it, I can always go back! And yes..saying "no" is something Ive recently started doing more and I actually think Im arousing some curiosity in people over me doing it...and perhaps even respect and more interest in them toward me as a person..and NOT just always saying YES to attending or doing them favors when actually at times I feel taken for granted (or worse) for ALWAYS being available and ALWAYS saying YES. And even your comment on cooking..ABSOLUTELY...Ive simplified my life in that area too. If I feel like staying in the kitchen forever to put out a spread, I will...or if not...I WONT! So, thank you, Kate! You are such a wise young lady! I love your channel and all of your energy (I wish I had lol)😄

I do makeup for me and I don't spend lots on it but that's my choice and I'm not doing it for someone else. I don't feel good if I don't. I had my hair colored once over 30 years ago when I was a model for a hair cut demonstration. Haven't colored it since and I love my grey hair. My sisters used to try to get me to color it & I just told them that I earned every grey hair. 😄 I do girl dinners when my husband is away & I don't have to follow his dietary needs. The hardest lesson is the just say no to things I don't really want to do. I am getting a lot better at that.

After retiring I stopped wearing makeup except on very special occasions. I don’t feel that much different but do appreciate the natural look. I’ve been coloring my hair due to premature grays since I was 26 and that’s one thing I’m not ready to give up. I moved to a very humid climate and my hair frizzes something awful so I’ve added keratin treatments biannually to my hair care but also cut out gel nails and pedicures so I’m justifying the cost of one against the other. Some day I’ll let the blond go grey, but not yet!!

Duty to Beauty - Jamie Lee Curtis was a Hollywood daughter who starred in a number of teenaged horror films starting at a young age and well past her teen years. I would call her a rebel within boundaries until she turned something like 50 and announced to the world, Hollywood, and women about the world that she was not going to be coloring her hair, getting lifts and tucks, nor the other expectations of aging women let alone those from the entertainment industry. She helped spearhead the whole gray hair thing and much more related to graceful aging. -- Thank you Jamie Lee Curtis and if you are needing some inspiration, try to dig up some of her old interviews.
