AKA Paralysis of analysis. Thank you for that reminder, because I've been watching videos, videos, videos, researching, etc. like crazy in an effort to get a strong baseline of knowledge and your lecture here caused me to realize that much of what I'm doing falls under perfectionism procrastination. Time for practice-practice-practice, and to limit research to highly relevant and brief intervals. Thanks so much, Stefan!

Pamela you sound like a person that would do well with coaching Im including some information about it but if you want to get better you will find that with help you will achieve what you are looking for sooner and not spending your time watching other people
      Stefan Baumann
      Online Coaching
Even if you are not in town to take classes in person with Stefan, it’s not a problem! Online coaching is designed to meet the needs of student’s who live anywhere in the world.
If you are interested in having me as your personal art coach, let’s talk. For each person I coach, I prearrange a set-aside time every Week, and it is up to the student to call me at that time for their personal coaching session. Each coaching call is 30 minutes.
      How Does it Work?
Students send me a photo of the painting that they worked on during the week (from an image that I selected for them to paint). Students do their best to complete my request. I review their painting and offer comments that address what is successful about the painting and what is missing or could be improved. I also look at other work that they may have done during the week.
I Coach At All Levels from Beginning to Advance
Some students want to become professional artists and I offer advice about how to set up websites and facebook sites and help them create their artist’s mission statement. The focus of the weekly session is determined by what each student requires to get to the next level. Students can also text me during the week to me ask quick questions about their paintings. It’s like having a personal coach in your pocket 24/7!
      How Much?
The fee for this service is $150.00 a month and students pay via credit card. You can quit at any time.
If you want to discuss this opportunity to work me as your personal art coach, let’s talk about it on the phone since that is where our coaching calls will take place. My phone number is 415-606-9074.
Please feel free to call me if you would like more information about how personal coaching might work for you.

Oh boy, did you hit the nail on the head! I am in the process of recapturing the skills that I took for granted 46 years ago. The fear of covering a white canvas is no longer there ... but the technical skills are really RUSTY. How discouraging. Listening to you is such a moral builder! Thanks!

Great couching. I am just lazy, because I can just sit down and paint. Everything is there already, many half done, it is just to pick up the brush, mostly. I am aware of this and living totally by excuses. At the same time I have a bad conscious for NOT painting. So it was nice to hear that one is "counted for" even if one think of painting. I do that EVERY day, thinking of different paintings, seeing paintings....thinking: I will paint that or do that or try that or......... just lazy I am....lol

I neede this encouragement today. I entered my first judged art exhibit with five canvases and didn't get a ribbon. I know it's dumb to feel down about it. I've only been painting two years. So I came home and painted! Then I saw you posted this talk and listened! I've sold 23 paintings to friends, co workers and strangers as I've been teaching myself to paint and I'm pleased that people have liked my art, but disappointed I didn't win. Why am I taking this to heart? Have you ever felt this way? It deflated me. I'm starting my first real art class in June. I'm excited to have a teacher who has been painting for forty years . Stefan I really enjoy all your videos so much and I feel your passion. I really want to excel at painting! I'm thinking "what would Stefan tell you Betsy?!" Lol I just wanted to share. What do you tell your art students about competition? Thanks have a great weekend!

If I'd painted every scene I've been absorbed by, and promised myself I would do - and didn't, because (fill in the blank) needs to be done I'd need a warehouse to store them. Thank you for the permission to do that again. ;- )

You hit the nail on the head when you said that society has decided that being an artist is not as important as other jobs. I have known that, but needed to hear it out loud.
I try to stay focused and get into my studio at least a few times a week, because I do show my work at juried art shows, but it is sometimes a struggle to get there because "life gets in the way".
Thank you for your video on motivation. The desire is there, just not the time, it seems. I will try to put aside my "other" life more often and get into that studio and paint.

Thanks so much for sharing as I'm watching this from Malaysia :D I listened to your advice on contests and that we should use that opportunity to create new works instead of digging through the archives of old artworks and I have to say, I'm inspired and pumped and created two pieces that is out of my comfort zone but feeling pretty good about it :D Thanks so much Mr. Baumann!

Wow, love this video it's wonderful to hear your voice and style of speaking. I wish I had a mentor like this, I'm a mom who always brought creativity to my life and incorporated it into our lives. I began painting with a unique, abstract style and just love it! I keep challenging myself to try new things. As you said, a year ago I would've marveled at this work and now I myself have made it! Keep encouraging artists out there, we can be our own worst enemy. The biggest challenge I have is following my voice and not wanting to try to be like everyone else. I DO make a difference and my work IS meaningful, even if it doesn't look like everyone else's! Bravo! Take care and thank you for this video!

Hi! Only YOU can do it.
You have to know that you are worth it...that you should live your passion.
I know it's not that easy but there is so many artist like you out there...many...many that are insecure
But you can make great art of course...you can feel confident
little tip : when you feel like putting yourself down...mock it
like you are thinking : I'm not good enough
just say it louder but with a silly voice just to mock yousrself and laugh and say it's not true
And still keep painting and do it every single time. Have fun with your painting
      :)
      Good night

I raised 8 kids. Yes I stopped painting but did not stop being creative. We have to have some outlet or we go crazy if we need to be creative. Now I am painting again. Sometimes I have to push myself. Wish my work was better. Still it drives me. lol housekeeping will never be over anything in my life. My mom never said thanks either for the two I did for her. Oh well. I needed to paint them not for her but for me.
Thank you for the video and getting me to thinking.

Great motivational boost You know ... my mother used to say, "No one on their death bed ever said, "I wish I had mopped the kitchen floor more often". She encouraged me to create regardless of the medium. I am the one who was guilty of discouraging and limiting myself and sometimes, I am still guilty of that. Thank you for a bit of a wake up.

This message will be irrelevant to the video, I always watch your videos, and you sometimes talk about how you are against acrylics. I dont know if you know Brad Teare, but he is also a great teacher, and on his blog, he started a series about acrylic vs oils. I would be glad if you would read it. Also another topic, you said we should use damar varnishes between two glaze layers, but on the homepage of the varnishes they write damar varnish is the final varnish, and the retouch varnis is for the "inside varnish layers".

    • @AlonzoTheArmless
      @AlonzoTheArmless 8 років тому +2

+Comrade Morlac I don't want to speak for Stefan, but why would he need to address his position on oils vs. acrylic any more than he already has? I see nothing wrong with 2 completely different opinions on oils vs. acrylics. Like you, I assume, I also enjoy Brad's videos, art, and teachings and have learned a lot from him, as well as from Stefan. I glean lots of useful info from other artists in person and online, as well. All their different opinions, techniques, and philosophies have been endless sources of information and inspiration.
I'd rather watch more videos from Stefan on the way he likes to paint, rather than see him pitted against an artist with opposing viewpoints. Leave the debates to the political campaigns and let the different artists teach us different ways to be the best artists we can be.
I do admit, I'd love to know Stefan's answer to your damarvarnish query.

      @StefanBaumann  8 років тому +2

+AlonzoTheArmless Thanks for your insight, All I offer is 35 years of teaching and my experience is years of training. As for the Damar Varnish Damar is Damar the retouch varnish has more turp in it . so there is not as much in the layer its just another product they can sell. If i where to believe everything I read or saw I would watch Fox news.

I'm listening to you, and I just realized that you're speaking to a room full of women. ...and there I was, an artist dude wondering why you speak so softly and with such a therapeutic voice. You're catering to middle aged chicks, and provide soft validation. I don't think adding some testosterone to your lectures would be an option? Anyways, your lectures are great, even if they feel a bit kum-ba-ya.
