Extreme insomnia is something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy!! I survived cardiac arrest at 16yrs old, I'm 30 now. I got a defibrillator implanted back at 16. A few years later, it happened again but in my sleep and I had my defibrillator then. I got thrown across my bed, I thought I was shot. It subconsciously traumatized me I think. I'd doze off, feel a "phantom jolt," wake up. It's diff than the startle response. I had to accept i could die in my sleep (and really a good way to go, as morbid as that sounds! My cousin died at 25 in his sleep from same heart condition) and I feel I have. However, I still had insomnia!! Id go up to 72hrs no sleep, crash for 12hrs. I literally had to get to the point that things look like they're moving when they are not. The intense anxiety and paranoia insomnia causes is awful, and it's driven me to want to attempt suicide. Countless times I've broken down BAWLING, praying and begging for God to just take me or thinking about suicide just so my body could finally rest. My advice to anyone who wants to take it is do what this woman says. Do not take prescription sleep pills long term, they don't work long term, theyre addictive (coming off is AWFUL), and side effects are terrible. I've done crazy things on ambien and similar hypnotics (once including an overdose that was intentional although I wasn't even suicidal, don't remember it at all). Switch to ear buds, self hypnosis videos on UA-cam, guided meditation, or binaural beats... THEY WORK. Michael Sealey here on YT is great. I still have bouts of insomnia but sooooo much better!!
I completely agree with your sleep aids statements. Shopping apps, smart phones and sleep meds are an interesting combo. Everyday when the mail or UPS showed up was like Christmas.

I feel her pain have had insomnia on and off for years. Mine was caused by health problems and generalised anxiety disorder.
Depends on how bad it is. I have had sleep problems since I was very young. I never never slept well, but recently It has gotten worse as I get older. My sleep insomnia is extremely bad (something that can’t be cured with a cup of milk). I’ve tried the no screens thing multiple times before but it never works because of how bad my insomnia is. It really depends on if you have and extremely severe case or a temporary one
Unfortunately, not really this lady I'm sure has relapsed since and she will continue to relapse. Severe insomnia never goes away (fully), it will always return. You just never know when or how severe the return will be.
here you go 1. No screens in the bedroom--except to listen to mindful meditation tracks. Not even for reading. 2. Get some early morning natural light, as often as possible. 3. No "To do list" after 7:30 pm 4. No caffeine after 12 pm 5. No TV after 10 pm. * 6. Do not go to bed until 11 PM. (I had been sleeping only from 9:30 pm to 11:30 pm. I need to a "phase shift.") 7. Do not get out of bed until 6 AM. 8. Listen to a mindful meditation track on youtube at bedtime and upon awaking during the night. 9. Do not "try" to go to sleep/go back to sleep. 10. If it takes more than 10 mins or I get frustrated trying to fall asleep, walk around for a few minutes, or changes locations to one that has low light, read something "boring." 11. Work on a hobby from 10 pm to 11 pm. The goal was to not focus on "to do" items, only on something pleasurable. 12. Get some exercise but not after 9 pm. 13. Write down "to do's" or "to-worry-abouts" then put it away. 14. Schedule 2 twenty minute "meditation breaks" during the day. Good luck with your insomnia! Michelle F.

@witcherino3152 exactly if no one in your family tree has the gene then you don't have it. Insomnia is horrible either way
Many times whe she starts talking she has a smacking noise, or whatever you medical people call it, so what condition is that? That probably would lead you to a neurological condition that would cause sleep issues.
Carolin Elieh I agree but you develop a dependency on it unfortunately and that hardly solves anything. Once I quit smoking indica before bed I wasn’t ever able to sleep and I was dependent on it to sleep, it took me a few weeks of quitting to actually get a good night of sleep. And it was the same with other people I know who would need weed to sleep.
smoking weed is harmful to the lungs which affects breathing...ingesting weed orally through tinctures or edibles is the only safe way to consume marijuana, while young most people can tolerate smoke in the lungs but the tar can damage the ability to have effective oxygen exchange which means your body works harder than it need to and creates stress
Generally the longest I would go was 4-5 days if I was getting 0 sleep a night. Then I might crash if I was lucky. However most of the time I would get 0-2 hours of hyper sleep (which was horrible).

I'm Scared... 😢💔💯
What heart condition do you have that led to the cardiac arrest?
So would.this be continous ? 3 days no sleep then sleep then 3 days no sleep.and slee?
May we please have the final, and important, part of this segment? It is of no use without the remainder. I was watching it at the time it aired but it was interrupted. Please post the valuable part.
I can't find a link to the final segment but I did find links to segments from other shows where the 2 sleep specialists who were on after me give advice. Great resources and very nice people: Dr. Carol Ash, @DrCarolAsh, ua-cam.com/video/039VuxVmLeA/v-deo.html and the Sleep doctor, Dr Michael Breus, @thesleepdoctor, ua-cam.com/video/7yw0xQiUCvM/v-deo.html
Fit Bit doesn't measure accurately. I believe completely she wasn't sleeping well- I've been there. But she was probably sleeping more than she thought she was. Poor woman though.
I'm sure it isn't completely accurate but it did show trends and when I started seeing the CBT doc, the manual tracking confirmed the data I had.
Didn't realize my hobby business channel would show as the Reply info. OWOJ below is me--Michelle from the video
@@michellefoley7119 Hi Michelle! Would you be able to share the 12 steps that would help with sleep? I have tried medication, hypnosis, acupuncture and all over the counter sleep aids. That would be really appreciated. I am so happy you are feeling better!! It can feel like torture when a person can't sleep. Thanks
Nevermind! I see you answered that question. Thank you!! Hope all is well.
4 years? I have had this torture for over 20 years now
Have you found something to help your insomnia friend?
@@Heed2070 unfortunately not, same as always. I am on holiday i Poland right now, and as usual it is ruining our vacation, as always :(
@@khole15 I'm sorry to hear this my friend I really hope you find something to make it better. I am going through the same thing. I'm not sure if I am even sleeping even 2 hours a night. Hang in there friend. Does your country have medications to help you? Or certain therapies?
@@Heed2070 thank you, i really hope you get better as well . There is one medication i have ever found that works, and that is xanax. But that is very difficult/impossible to get from a doctor, also you cant take it all the time, as you have to keep increasin dosage. So in the long run it is no sollution. I have tried many forms of therapy, nothing that works unfortunately. How about you?
@@khole15 That is unfortunate. My doctor only prescribes benadryl and some other medication called trazodone that doesn't seem to work for me. I think my insomnia stems from a neck issue that I am trying to get diagnosed but it is hard to do so. I thought maybe it could be an inner ear problem or heart problem too. Hang in there friend and thank you for talking with me. I hope we can find out what is causing this insomnia. There is always a reason behind this illness.
I feel her pain have had insomnia on and off for years. Mine was caused by health problems and generalised anxiety disorder.
Oh snoring is a killer. If you have this problem you need it fixed. Snoring is DEADLY.
she still seems super tense
Yes, Meghan Kelly really seems high strung in this interview.
Meghan Kelly is Jerry Springer. I meant the woman with insomnia. Super tense or depressed or something.
oh, ha ha. I would probably be a bit tense being "interviewed" by Meghan.
oh for sure I would be too! I have to say that i didn't find the advice that helpful and I was surprised it worked on such bad insomnia.
she has anxiety...hence the behavior therapist which is counseling...this was a mental health issue for her. she prob is tense being on tv
meditation saved my sleep as well
INSOMNIA CAN BE A MENTAL HEALTH ISSUE! AND CURED WITHOUT MEDICATIONS!
No electronics is a good one.
My mom is struggling for insomnia!
Wow… there’s hope…..
Unfortunately, not really this lady I'm sure has relapsed since and she will continue to relapse. Severe insomnia never goes away (fully), it will always return. You just never know when or how severe the return will be.
This was great. Thanks to Megan and the Today team. Well done everyone
okay - so she is saying what we have known for years. But it worked for her.
Lol
I can t sleep either.
4.59am
😳
I'm so sick of it
U not here along , it's 6:08 and I'm feeling the same way
This is good but what else is on the list?
here you go 1. No screens in the bedroom--except to listen to mindful meditation tracks. Not even for reading.
2. Get some early morning natural light, as often as possible.
3. No "To do list" after 7:30 pm
4. No caffeine after 12 pm
5. No TV after 10 pm.
* 6. Do not go to bed until 11 PM. (I had been sleeping only from 9:30 pm to 11:30 pm. I need to a "phase shift.")
7. Do not get out of bed until 6 AM.
8. Listen to a mindful meditation track on youtube at bedtime and upon awaking during the night.
9. Do not "try" to go to sleep/go back to sleep.
10. If it takes more than 10 mins or I get frustrated trying to fall asleep, walk around for a few minutes, or changes locations to one that has low light, read something "boring."
Michelle F.
CBT-I certified physicians are very rare.
There are only 2 in the entire state of Michigan.
There are many counselors and psychologists who claim to teach CBT-I, but none of them are actually certified physicians.
I simply use medication for insomnia, because there is no other viable treatment available.
Hi Gy Bx what medication do you use if I may ask? I'm suffering from severe insomnia and my doctor just tells me to take benadryl or melatonin after trazodone not working for me.
@@Heed2070 I am facing the same sleeping less than 3 hrs daily god help me .. I like nothing I have lost interest in everything.. I am 27 what is your age ?
@@ashishjha9263 I am 29. My doctor says I need to try sleep compression therapy, but I think the main issue is my neck it has been stiff for so long. I am trying to see a neurologist. Hang in there friend I hope we find help soon.

The Sleep Coach school are frauds. DO NOT HIRE THEM.
I talked turn Pa on behalf again. WE both know you put the video on my home scroll for me turn find. Still trying turn protect your dimbie. Thanks Megyn.
I appreciate it. I appreciate you baby girl.

Four years sounds like torture, imagine 6
Why is it that “we’ll be right back” never happens on UA-cam? Megyn Kelly Today, I want to watch the entire episode.
Michelle can I get the LIST of rules...I take care of my special needs son and I am where you were at....Need Help...sleep aids are not helping.
Hi hope you’re doing much better now
I have insomnia haven't get any good sleep since it started
3:25 She needed a device to figure out she was sleeping 2 hours a night? Wouldn't you know anyway?
I didn't know exactly how little it was until I could see the data. Plus, it had been sporadic. Around the time I got the fitbit, is when it hit critical mass. I knew I was super tired, that I was awake a lot, but seeing the actual numbers was a huge driver to get some help.
Sometimes you don't know if you are just closing your eyes or really sleeping. It's terrible, I went through it. Or sometimes you are sleeping so lightly it doesn't even register as sleep.
I needed this
I am like this, I get about 3 hours a night. I’m at my wits end.😢😢
how long is your average sleep?
@ what?!?
@@bekahelder537 sorry i mean average sleep every night
@@Limitlessluckyunique888 honestly it’s gotten a lot better. Most nights probably 7 hours.
@bekahelder537 how did you do it?
I sleep less than an hour a day and on many days don’t sleep at all. This is insomnia has been happening for almost a year now. It’s killing me I can’t stand it anymore. Sleep medications and cbti are useless. This might be a brain condition for me maybe something like fatal insomnia.
I feel you , i had insomnia like you for 4 years and i barely sleep 2 hours a day
It is not fatal insomnia unless people in your family tree have had it trust me I had the same anxiety issue as well and the only way that I calmed myself down is by medications and telling myself that if I had that I won’t be able to sleep at all, also in that disease your body will breakdown from the inside and you won’t even be able to walk or read or write
I feel your pain. Chronic insomnia for 3 years. I wake up multiple times during the night. Im exhausted daily. At 54 its a struggle, im very irritable. Tried everything, nothing works but Lunesta occasionally. I may just take it every night. I don't no what else to do. Sorry for your pain
@michaelthau1007 I've been experiencing chronic insomnia for 5yrs now😢 somedays better than most. I take Lunesta once a week, but it only gives me 2-3 hours of sleep. I'm not going to take it every night because I don't want to get addicted. I
@witcherino3152 exactly if no one in your family tree has the gene then you don't have it. Insomnia is horrible either way
It's absolutely terrible.
It's the worst
This woman is a true insomniac. She doesn't even have energy to speak. That's how you feel.
9 years for me.
DONT WORK THE NIGHT SHIFT IT *D E S T R O Y E D* MY SLEEP
Wonder if this poor woman ever got her hormones fixed. Spoiler: menopause and peri menopause will cause this level of insomnia.
Many times whe she starts talking she has a smacking noise, or whatever you medical people call it, so what condition is that? That probably would lead you to a neurological condition that would cause sleep issues.
Dream water
Imagine our president sleeps about 2 hours a night..
When you don't get sleep, your brain just cannot work right. It is crazy.
he sleeps in 2....3 hour shifts so he averages 6 hours I watched some documentary on him a month ago.
That explains a lot
Smoke weed Indica will help you sleep.. plus no food before bed
Carolin Elieh my exact routine
@@RR-vh7oo lmao weed is not a drug it's a plant
FLAXSEED OIL IS MAGIC FOR SLEEP.
So what do you do with the flaxseed oil?
I ingest it.
What the longest you guys couldn't sleep
Generally the longest I would go was 4-5 days if I was getting 0 sleep a night. Then I might crash if I was lucky. However most of the time I would get 0-2 hours of hyper sleep (which was horrible).
Over a month.
BS
Lol
I'm calling BS. There's simply no way that you cannot sleep, you would quite literally be dead.
You don't have to believe it but I know many people who suffer besides me. Just look through the list.
Hope you never have to go through it
Bro I can’t sleep for last 5days that means 0hrs of sleep u know what’s happening ?The time when my brain in going to sleep or unconscious the conscious mind get activated just before I fall asleep and it became a habit
It’s not bs, I’ve always suffered from severe insomnia 😢
Dude I've had severe insomnia for over 3 years now. Trust me when I say, it's not bs. I hate life now. I used to be so athletic and full of fun and energy. Now I'm a waste of a human. I can't work and am not able to drive most days. My body and brain is wrecked.
