Grant was recently awarded the rank 6 Star General, he stands now along George Washington and John J. Pershing. A long overdue promotion. For a man who saved/kept the nation together and was also respectful to the South. Also tried to continue Lincoln's legacy after his passing.

He never commanded troops in battle, commanding at the 4 star and above level isn't "commanding in battle." He was a staff officer hie entire career until he commanded the North African campaign. He sucked so bad he had British officers commanding the naval forces, air forces, and ground forces. He job was to keep everyone happy, which all things considered he did. Read "An Army at Dawn" it covers the NA campaign.
There is no 6 star general. It was a completely different title. pershing had the title after 1919. Washington didnt get the rank until 1976. But its not a 6 star. The rank is "general of the armies" which means you are absolute highest rank. It was going to be givin to another general, but pershing was still alove and had the title so he refused. 6 star is more of the nickname of the rank

Grant is always over shadowed by Lincoln and rightfully so. But Grant finished Lincoln’s fight and he deserved better then how he has been portrayed. He is an excellent general, leader and president.
They overlook him because of his unmitigated taste for corruption, ineffective administrative skills, and selling out political favors to the highest bidder....he's a great general though.

This story of Grant's crushing late-life poverty grips the heart. That Samuel Clemens -- aka Mark Twain -- came to Grant's aid is also a great American story. Twain, a boy from Missouri, wrote stories about how he had prepared his young self to fight -- right or wrong -- for the Confederacy. Not very well did Twain prepare, but he gave it a very earnest try. Later, Twain saw the justice of the Union cause. And he came to the Old President's side when Grant was getting help from almost no one. Twain and Grant -- two American treasures. And here they meet.
His weakness was in trying to make up to his wife his failures in business, He was scammed too many times by “friends”. His last real hope for recovery was dashed in 1880 when he failed to receive the Republican nomination for President. Very likely he would have been reelected. But then, of course, the book would not have been written.
He was a quiet man with plenty of common sense. Grant was very good with horses and math. He dearly loved his wife and children. All this and a great general. It is mind boggling. Here was a true man in every sense.
After viewing this series and my being a 56 yr old man of Black America , Chinese American and Irish American mixed blood and living here in NYC, I drove over to Grants Tomb to lay flowers and a card. To my surprise, their was a wreath of flowers and a Black Lives Matter sign there. I was not the only one moved by what this series brought to light. And his heart is surely needed as American cities burn from the injustices that remain from some of our white brothers and sisters. We own this man a debt of gratitude. His humanity for that time period was surely amazing! 🇺🇸✊🏾✊✊🏻

I wasn't born in this Country, but as a naturalized American citizen, he represented everything I love of this Country. The more I learn about this man, the more I appreciate him. Now as then, we are divided, and we are in need men of his courage, integrity, wisdom, and perseverance to guide us.
I am 50 yo and was raised on Lost Cause BS. That Grant was a drunk who won by just plowing immense waves of men to their doom until the venerable Lee was worn down. What lies those were. Grant is our greatest general and one of the greatest Americans to ever live. How did we forget that? I remember doing a report on him and from then on had him as my favorite president. I didn’t know much depth about him other than him being a general, the drinking, and him being the 18th president. Until I saw this awesome 3 part series when it came out. He truly was a Legend and the reason why we are the United States 🇺🇸
There are many men to this degree today but as was with Grant their stories will not be told or until after their death someone with power and appreciation campaigns to make them known
People today cannot begin to understand how much Grant was loved, honored and venerated during his time. Lincolns death left Grant as the savior and the man who reunified the nation. Soldiers of all union armies saluted him as their General whether he commanded their army or not. The dispersions and inaccuracies of the "Lost Cause" liars are a crime against a great man.

A wonderful series. It was only 6 hours long, so many of the things many of us wished had been included could not have been. Still, it is time to set the record straight on Grant, and the History Channel got this one right. Admired by both North and South
Essess Nine : Better yet, read Grant’s memoirs. They are the better book. Grant writes in a vert easy to read style and the book is hard to put down. Easily the best book written by an American President.
This was one of the best History Channel documentaries I have ever seen. I loved the balance of the story. I am now reading his memoirs as a result. I believe this nation sacrificed so much that is overlooked these days. Everybody in our nation should watch this. It is not only educational, but I believe it can prepare our hearts for the national dialogue that begs to be engaged, especially these days.
Sometime after Grant’s presidencies he and wife went to England to visit his daughter and new grandchild. Expecting just a few welcoming dignitaries would be there on his arrival, Grant was flabbergasted to see over 100,000 Englishmen were there to welcome him! Grant had won international fame, love, and respect and not the smearing disrespect he was buried under later.
@@m3rl707 For a long time, Grant has been written off as "A drunk who only won through superior numbers" and was even called The Butcher, which is pretty unfair when you consider the context of why he fought the way he did and is very inconsiderate of how much he cared about his men, openly weeping when he read the casualty counts on one occasion. For too long, Grant's faults were hyperbolized and his achievements were buried. And it's good to see him getting the recognition he deserves.

Grant is a very respectable general in history. He may not be the best US President but definitely a very good general that turns the tides many times for America. On the siege of Vicksburg, he freed a lot of slaves. I personally felt that he should be one of the States national heroes, definitely par with Lincoln.
Not enough praise here for Justin Salinger's performance as Grant. A little known English character actor, he got the opportunity to be the lead role in this epic production, to play a General and a U.S. President, and he knocked it out of the park. Not even an Emmy nom.
Docudramas are difficult to nominate for awards because they fall in an awkward territory between TV dramas and documentaries, and they usually end up in the latter category. However, a biopic about Grant is long overdue, and Salinger should get first dibs.
These actors playing Grant and Twain do an amazing job...such nuance in their expressions and delivery....I have watched this segment at least 10 times now....and the guy who played Grant was fantastic throughout the series!
He is the greatest American to have ever lived, in any time period, in any generation, by far. Jealous parties were constantly reporting to Lincoln that Grant was a drunk & must be replaced. Lincoln commented that, whatever Grant was drinking, he wanted to send a barrel of it to all of his other generals. On another occasion he said "I cannot spare this man. He fights."
Grant certainly drank, but it was not consistent, at times none and others to much. Often correlated to his distance from his family and his level of activity.

Tbh the moment I saw what Grant looked like on a Presidents ruler in school, I just knew he was something special. Tired eyes, a thick beard, battle-worn...but eyes that said "freedom or die trying..." Long live Grant. My ancestors would not have been freed without him and his army...
It was perhaps a miracle that the two greatest Americans lived at the same time and found each other to work on the single most important American task to date. It was not so much a miracle however what these two individuals achieved together, in so far as the greatness of their stars, in their individual nature's they were already largely written and achieved; Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. I just discovered this series yesterday. This is the ABSOLUTE best thing History channel has done in years, if not ever. They should go through in this fashion for many figures. This is exceptionally well made and informative.

We could sure use a man with the character of Ulysses S. Grant today. We had just such a man when Dwight Eisenhower was President. He was a man who served his country at the highest levels of leadership, just as Grant did.
Ah Grant, one of the few American generals that I don't consider overrated (Patton and Macarthur example) if anything he was always underrated and I am happy he is now getting his due after all these decades.
This miniseries was one of the most fascinating and well done things the History Channel has ever put together imo. I truly believe they couldn't have picked a better actor to play General Grant. They should really play this more often, rather than The Joke of Oak Island
In Elementary school, probably 5th grade, some 20 years ago we all had to choose a President to do a report on. I chose Grant because his middle name was Simpson. Given that the Simpsons were huge then that’s why... but little did I know that that decision would introduced me to my favorite American figure ever that I will always admire and look to for inspiration always. I’m writing/developing a series that I’m sure will never see the light of day but as Grants quote at the end assures me to never give up until it is finished, the main character in my series is heavily based on and inspired by Grant. If it ever does see the light of day, then I will be proud and honored to be able to keep the legacy of US Grant alive.

President Grant was a wonderful, caring person. He loved his family and his country. He helped bring about a lot of laws to protect African Americans. He established the first national park. He ensured that his wife and kids were well taken care of as he was dying of cancer. He was not a butcher as the Confederates suffered more casualties than the Union did. Grant cared about the future of this country which was tied to emancipating those who were in bondage. He really was the President who went to bat for African Americans...

I have read Grant's memoirs, and let me tell you, they are well worth the effort he obviously put into them. Especially his command of the maps of every battle, which are phenomenal in the thoroughness of their detail. You can very well imagine the level of the command of the terrain he must have had as a general.
Ron Chernow's book was amazing . . . and this mini-series comes from this book and the touring of Chernow in support (same man who's bio of "Hamilton" led to the Broadway show). It is helping to resuscitate the dis-honored legacy of Grant . . . and the story of how and why Grant's legacy was so dis-honored by the "Lost Cause" historians of the glorious old South is fascinating in itself.

The series moved me so much that I went to Grants Tomb yesterday evening and placed flowers and a card. With all the protest and riots going on here and across the nation. I am 50 yo and was raised on Lost Cause BS. That Grant was a drunk who won by just plowing immense waves of men to their doom until the venerable Lee was worn down. What lies those were. Grant is our greatest general and one of the greatest Americans to ever live. How did we forget that? How could whole country nearly forget one of its greatest sons and allow his name to be so shamefully slandered?
Sadly it's all too easy and grows easier by the decade. Lies are often more accepted than truth because lies can be tailored to the need, fanciful and gripping. All while truth is mundane and cares not for the opinions of those that see it
It goes further back, Clan Grant has always demonstrated this level of greatness. They're an impressive Scottish clan and bloodline with rich history. He was great but not our greatest general. I'd say Eisenhower or Washington were better.

As a 22 year old, I just relearned ulysses in my own terms, and fell in love. What an underrated, unappreciated soul.
I remember doing a report on him and from then on had him as my favorite president. I didn’t know much depth about him other than him being a general, the drinking, and him being the 18th president. Until I saw this awesome 3 part series when it came out. He truly was a Legend and the reason why we are the United States 🇺🇸
He will forever be one of my favorite people in history. A real, true hero. Wow. I wish there were more men like him in today’s time
There are many men to this degree today but as was with Grant their stories will not be told or until after their death someone with power and appreciation campaigns to make them known

People today cannot begin to understand how much Grant was loved, honored and venerated during his time. Lincolns death left Grant as the savior and the man who reunified the nation. Soldiers of all union armies saluted him as their General whether he commanded their army or not. The dispersions and inaccuracies of the "Lost Cause" liars are a crime against a great man.

I recommend people read Chernow's biography of Grant. He wrote this miniseries... the book tells the same story in more detail.
Essess Nine : Better yet, read Grant’s memoirs. They are the better book. Grant writes in a vert easy to read style and the book is hard to put down. Easily the best book written by an American President.

This was one of the best History Channel documentaries I have ever seen. I loved the balance of the story. I am now reading his memoirs as a result. I believe this nation sacrificed so much that is overlooked these days. Everybody in our nation should watch this. It is not only educational, but I believe it can prepare our hearts for the national dialogue that begs to be engaged, especially these days.

Sometime after Grant’s presidencies he and wife went to England to visit his daughter and new grandchild.
Expecting just a few welcoming dignitaries would be there on his arrival, Grant was flabbergasted to see over 100,000 Englishmen were there to welcome him!
Grant had won international fame, love, and respect and not the smearing disrespect he was buried under later.
Nice to see that disrespect is starting to shatter after all these years.

@@m3rl707 For a long time, Grant has been written off as "A drunk who only won through superior numbers" and was even called The Butcher, which is pretty unfair when you consider the context of why he fought the way he did and is very inconsiderate of how much he cared about his men, openly weeping when he read the casualty counts on one occasion.
For too long, Grant's faults were hyperbolized and his achievements were buried.
And it's good to see him getting the recognition he deserves.

General Grant is one of the greatest generals if not the greatest . He will not be forgotten.
Grant is the only General of either side to destroy three enemy armies. That excludes the "Master" of Generals Robert E. Lee who destroyed none.

Actually he was originally from Point Pleasant and Georgetown Ohio. Both are close to Cincinnati. You can go through his childhood homes.

Grant's and Sherman's memoirs are the two most important books I've read in my 67 years.
Grant is a very respectable general in history. He may not be the best US President but definitely a very good general that turns the tides many times for America. On the siege of Vicksburg, he freed a lot of slaves. I personally felt that he should be one of the States national heroes, definitely par with Lincoln.
Not enough praise here for Justin Salinger's performance as Grant. A little known English character actor, he got the opportunity to be the lead role in this epic production, to play a General and a U.S. President, and he knocked it out of the park. Not even an Emmy nom.
Docudramas are difficult to nominate for awards because they fall in an awkward territory between TV dramas and documentaries, and they usually end up in the latter category.
However, a biopic about Grant is long overdue, and Salinger should get first dibs.
These actors playing Grant and Twain do an amazing job...such nuance in their expressions and delivery....I have watched this segment at least 10 times now....and the guy who played Grant was fantastic throughout the series!

Did a project on him in the 5th grade... the lost cause did this man dirty, painted him as a drunk....
Jealous parties were constantly reporting to Lincoln that Grant was a drunk & must be replaced. Lincoln commented that, whatever Grant was drinking, he wanted to send a barrel of it to all of his other generals. On another occasion he said "I cannot spare this man. He fights."
Grant certainly drank, but it was not consistent, at times none and others to much. Often correlated to his distance from his family and his level of activity.

Tbh the moment I saw what Grant looked like on a Presidents ruler in school, I just knew he was something special. Tired eyes, a thick beard, battle-worn...but eyes that said "freedom or die trying..." Long live Grant. My ancestors would not have been freed without him and his army...

It was perhaps a miracle that the two greatest Americans lived at the same time and found each other to work on the single most important American task to date. It was not so much a miracle however what these two individuals achieved together, in so far as the greatness of their stars, in their individual nature's they were already largely written and achieved; Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant.
Lee knew how to fight and win battles. Grant knew how to fight and win wars....
Please make more shows like this. People like General Grant are what made America great, and their stories need to be told for future generations

I think an amazing part of his character is when his father in law gifts him a slave and even when his poor and selling that slave could help his family so much financially he instead …freed the man

Ah Grant, one of the few American generals that I don't consider overrated (Patton and Macarthur example) if anything he was always underrated and I am happy he is now getting his due after all these decades.

This miniseries was one of the most fascinating and well done things the History Channel has ever put together imo. I truly believe they couldn't have picked a better actor to play General Grant. They should really play this more often, rather than The Joke of Oak Island

In Elementary school, probably 5th grade, some 20 years ago we all had to choose a President to do a report on. I chose Grant because his middle name was Simpson. Given that the Simpsons were huge then that’s why... but little did I know that that decision would introduced me to my favorite American figure ever that I will always admire and look to for inspiration always.
I’m writing/developing a series that I’m sure will never see the light of day but as Grants quote at the end assures me to never give up until it is finished, the main character in my series is heavily based on and inspired by Grant. If it ever does see the light of day, then I will be proud and honored to be able to keep the legacy of US Grant alive.

He was one of greatest Americans in history. To bad that his, and Lincoln's vision of reconstruction wasn't fulfilled. Had it been, much suffering especially in the south would've been avoided.

President Grant was a wonderful, caring person. He loved his family and his country. He helped bring about a lot of laws to protect African Americans. He established the first national park. He ensured that his wife and kids were well taken care of as he was dying of cancer. He was not a butcher as the Confederates suffered more casualties than the Union did. Grant cared about the future of this country which was tied to emancipating those who were in bondage. He really was the President who went to bat for African Americans...

I have read Grant's memoirs, and let me tell you, they are well worth the effort he obviously put into them. Especially his command of the maps of every battle, which are phenomenal in the thoroughness of their detail. You can very well imagine the level of the command of the terrain he must have had as a general.

Ron Chernow's book was amazing . . . and this mini-series comes from this book and the touring of Chernow in support (same man who's bio of "Hamilton" led to the Broadway show).
It is helping to resuscitate the dis-honored legacy of Grant . . . and the story of how and why Grant's legacy was so dis-honored by the "Lost Cause" historians of the glorious old South is fascinating in itself.
