- Posted by the International Al Jolson Society, www.jolson.org, this is an excerpt of the 16 Dec 1939 broadcast of the opening of the Arrowhead Springs Resort. In this clip, Al Jolson sings "California, Here I Come" in a unique arrangement, with a chorus, verse, and two choruses. This is the only time Jolson recorded the song this way, and the audience reaction speaks to their approval. It is, of course, illustrated with period photos of Al Jolson and others. The complete broadcast, along with other Jolson radio shows, is available at the Official Al Jolson Website at www.jolson.org, from its posting in December through the end of January. Join the IAJS for this, and much more, material of the World's Greatest Entertainer, from our Facebook page or website.

What a treat to again listen to Al Jolson - as only he can do justice to "California Here I Come." I never get tired of listening to Al Jolson. Thank you for making this and other Al Jolson songs and programs available.
Holy Christ, what a performance. This man in three minutes gets you so excited and happy that it takes the energy right out of you after he’s finished singing. There will never be another Jolson.
Thanks for your comment. See more of Jolson in our other podcasts and on the IAJS website at www.jolson.org

Incredible, Jolson was the king
Yes, Mark, he was, indeed. Hope more folks both subscribe to this channel and pop over to the website of the International Al Jolson Society at www.jolson.org to hear more!
It’s also interesting to see Judy Garland pictured here with Al; they were both similar as entertainers, had that pep and electricity
Love this Al Jolson song! He preceded them all, and no one even came close!
Thanks, it is a great performance. Please do check out the other Video Podcasts in this series, and subscribe to the channel if you've not already. See more Jolson at our website www.jolson.org
Good old times when music and singers were great performers. Today what we have?? Dont laugh, there´s all you can do after hearing raps, funks and MC´s....Jolson was the greatest entertainer ever....Larry Parks performed his life in the 2 films...well, lets say the music and song worth watching it.
Indeed, it was a different era. Today - December 13 - is Larry Parks' 107th birthday! Thanks Marc! for adding the Live, 1939 version: California Here I come.
wonderful to see him with Garland next to him ... the two greatest singers ever ... they sang together once briefly on a radio show ... show stoppers the two of them ....
Anne Roy I absolutely agree, and great bit with some great singers
Jolson vocals "incredible"
Terrific!! So sad we have no videos of his live performances
Ah, but we do, at least one from 1949 in Chicago. The International Al Jolson Society includes this on one of our DVDs. You can see the information on the website at www.jolson.org, and join the Society to gain access to this and more Jolson material.
nothing compares
Thanks, and we certainly agree. Please check out the other videos on this channel and subscribe if you've not already. More on Jolson at www.jolson.org
wow nobody comes near to this ?
You are absolutely correct, math. Share it around, and help more people see what a real entertainer sounds like!
Well, I certainly can't argue with you on that point. The energy that come across on this recording is simply exceptional!
AND Al was 53 years young at the time of this performance!
Maravilhoso

I really love what you and the Society have done to carry on Jolson’s legacy. I would love to share this on social media, but not with the emblem showing him in black face. This aspect of Al’s legacy does not play well in a post George Floyd world at this time.
I know enough about vaudeville to understand the distinction but the public can’t. And I just feel bad that my hands are tied in this way.
i do understand your concern. I have been using a newer logo on material being produced now, but there is no way to replace a video on UA-cam; you have to take it down and start all over again. Check out some of the newer material in the IAJS Video Department, and, perhaps, those could be updated if need be.
@@MarcLeavey Thanks 😀 No need to take down anything. I do like your idea of changing the logo.
FWIW my uncle of blessed memory was in a minstrel chorus. I don’t think anyone in those days wanted to shame the black community or thought they were doing anything to harm them - in the Antebellum South yes and maybe some less vocal outliers here and there. But Jolson’s life and work was all inclusive in these respects. It’s sad we can’t have a constructive dialogue on this issue - just my editorial remarks 😀
@@danielscuiry2847 Going forward, that will change. I only wish I could change out the video on UA-cam without having to take down the post and repost. For this video, would mean losing 16,300 views!
I don't like the racist shit either but he was an excellent performer. I too prefer to listen this way.
These presentations are very authentic, and as realistic as possible, using illustrations related to actual radio performances, a real treat! In that aspect the need to include the earlier theatrical Jolson, most often the blackface one, is most often not required. There is exceptions. I.E - Go Down Moses from the 1930 movie Big Boy. On the broader perspective however there is nothing definitive indicating the Al Jolson blackface image is destroying his memory. Certainly across the internet, you tube, where he is concerned the general response is, it is accepted as a product of it's time, that is from viewers, listeners perspective, despite BIG BROTHER forces going out of their way attempting to brainwash humanity that it was total horror! The need for that fabrication and manipulation is to protect their contemporary profit!. That is THE UNDERLINING PROBLEM! with blackface, and Al Jolson, the DATED ASPECT OF IT! Preferable, just for a better, more modern, contemporary initial perspective of Al Jolson ii is better not exposed, but at the same time, to cave into the contemporary profit forces who, if it is not blackface, will crucify Jolie for something, by not doing something like sharing something like this around, just because of a blackface Jolson Society logo, is an admittance that all the hatred of the great Jolson spewed out is justified. All these enjoying this, like it for the great performance, and not because there is a blackface logo on it, and I am sure others who you share it to will also, just as there will be some who enjoy it, no matter what, and others that don't. Those easy conned by contemporary profit rhetoric!
Could have done without the one minute intro.
Why, he's even better than Clive Baldwin!
Ya think? Please enjoy the 138 Jolson Podcasts now on UA-cam, and stop by the IAJS website at www.jolson.org - Yes, Clive is there, but there is a lot more of Jolson!
🤣

I am a Sinatra singer! ... BUT, don't get me wrong - Al was the GREATEST ENTERTAINER, and I cannot live without his vibrancy and humor!!! ... It is just that my voice is more apt for Sinatra songs!
