Brad - The best older brother and musical inspiration you could have online. Just caught your channel and finding many parallels in our stories since starting my channel as well, grateful.
Friends are easy to cut ties with. People come and go out of our lives but family will always be family. Everyone has that raging lion inside of them and say horrific things to each other sometimes. Usually when people fight they are projecting, everything they think they hate about the other person they really hate about themselves. Lennon wrote How Do You Sleep for McCartney. When interviewed he said I wrote that song for Paul but it turns out I was just writing about me again. If in a toxic situation if you simply say let's both calm down and we can talk later it will defuse the situation. Toxic family takes work but toxic friends are not worth having around.
Family can be just as toxic especially if there’s any type of abuse, even if the abuse happened decades ago, letting go is sometimes the best way, even if it’s a family member.
@ tru nuff. It’s good to work through the small personality stuff, forgiveness is importance…but sometimes a complete severing is crucial. The last thing I said to my father was “ die alone and sad”😂🤷♂️. Not sorry.
From my experience, finding the " affordable " apartment in a new area, brings on a whole set of problems and new friends! It's definitely will test you!
Great advice Brad! Toxic people.. I had this friend who was really talented, could write some of the coolest songs but he was an alcoholic. I would plan a weekend with him to write and play and every time I went over he would drink before I got there and after one maybe two songs he would be completely drunk and pass out.. super frustrating!! Long story short, he passed away a couple years ago..he was only 56 Super sad. RIP friend
Yup, can relate. Currently have a what feels like former friend who's a closet alcoholic, he hides his drinking, it's painful watching the friendship disintegrate... I'm the only one who knows how much he drinks, some people even think he's tee total because he keeps the truth from them. Other friends almost died from booze, I've just quit as a 50 year old, I do not like being around these toxic people who do that to themselves, it's dark.
Man, there’s so much truth and wisdom packed into this video. I want to add a couple of thoughts from my own experience. First, I did the exact same thing-I moved to LA at 18 with rock star dreams, only to come back home after six months. I tried again at 19, landed two guitar auditions… and never got a callback. At the time, I was no better than average on guitar, and back in the ‘80s, that wasn’t nearly good enough. After about four years of chasing the dream, I decided to go to school and keep music as a side passion. Best decision I ever made. Now, I have a successful career as an attorney (I’m the ‘blues lawyer’ guy you’ve mentioned), but I’ve also played in numerous local bands and had my fair share of fun onstage for small crowds. That’s been deeply fulfilling. Looking back, I realized I was chasing the rock star dream for all the wrong reasons-fame, glory, money, and women. If those are your motivations, whether as a career or a hobby, you’re setting yourself up for deep disappointment, frustration, and even depression. Play for the love of music, or don’t do it at all. Lastly, cut ties with toxic people-including so-called friends. They can be the greatest roadblocks to your success, happiness, and peace of mind. I’ve recently ended long-term friendships that I should have walked away from decades ago. Don’t let sentimentality keep you tied to people who waste your time or secretly want to see you fail. Life is far too short to spend another second with those types. Surround yourself with real friends and true supporters-they’ll help you go further than you ever imagined.
My dad was a smoking hot saxophone-clarinet player in the late 40’s. He had his own dance band and was making good money playing dances. Things changed in the 50’s. Rock and roll came in. He was a big band guy and hated it. He switched careers. He became a contractor and with the baby boom needing houses, he did real well. His old band mates would come over and sometimes they would jam.
@@badbradMy mom said my dad was the worst dancer. He was always playing in the band. He never learned to dance because he was too busy playing the music.
Regret that i didn't start my guitarjourney when i was young, i had the guitar on the wall in the basement. No, it was not the moment. I started when the flue started, never stopped. Playing every day and meet people i play in a band with now, i am 50 now. So it's never to late. And i look forward, no regrets anymore. I had regrets about it. Thinking how good i could have been... Keep on living your dream, most of us play for fun. And that what it's about in the end of the day.
Wow, thank you I really needed that today. It’s not about music that I was feeling weird about but about life in general but you said you get up every morning you focus on your future a new day a new opportunity I needed that thank you

This is a really great one! Sometimes we chase things for so long, and we have such a different idea of what things are going to be that we achieve them without even knowing it and stick with them out of habit or other psychological reasons. I had to let go of all my childhood friends and my family to move forward and grow. I was getting no support and too much drama, so I left. I am happy with my decision and have come far. My wife keeps me from self destructing and staying focused. The best way to find out what to do, is to discover what you’re good at and then find opportunities to use those skills.
It can be hard to let go of a dream, feels like giving up. But I've learned a new one will always take its place--dreamers will always be dreamers! Love your stories btw. I lived in some real sh*tholes when I was younger, dude beating his girl upstairs and the other neighbor on crack screaming for the police in the middle of the night, pounding on my door.. Yikes.
I wrote people off that belittle me, i know i have faults but never had much of a upbringing , so on lifes journey we need to focus on the future relizing we can't change the past, thats.where we learn from past and change our course to go in a new direction
I had to cut ties with a couple brothers I had been in bands with since we were around 14. We are all 46-48 now. I was the worker of the group, always willing to practice the same parts over and over, practice for quick set up and tear down, willing to take the risks to climb higher. They were usually all about that mentality for about a month per year until they would go back to there "good enough" phase. After they declined a national tour with a pretty recognizable metal band, behind my back, because they were scared of the "what if's" (what if our bus/van breaks down, what if we don't sell merch) of the situation, that was the final straw for me. When I found out about this about 6 months after the fact, I asked "I thought this was what we were working for all these years?" I showed up to our rehearsal spot one day loaded up all my gear into my truck and trailer by myself locked the door behind me and slid the key under the door. All that was left was one guitar amp and the drums. Everything else was my investment. Good riddance. One of biggest musical regrets was wasting so many years with dead weight. But, we're in Iowa and there's not much to choose from around here, so I stuck with what I knew hoping they would get better.
You've been in my feed for days and I decided to check you out at a time I needed to hear this. I've already bookmarked this video so i can go through your stuff later but I really needed to hear this and I feel I needed to hear it from you for some reason if that makes any sense. Have a great day.
Learn from your mistakes and move on. Stay positive! Things never stay bad and they never stay good. Staying positive get’s you through the sucky times.
Thx Brad. Great music and life advice. Yea, man, I've had to let 2 friends in my life go. They were just too toxic. The hardest one, was a good friend and fellow band mate. However, he was just too toxic to be around. It was tough at first, but I'm better for it. This video has helped me. And, yep, forgetting the past and regrets. Peace.
Silverado's, now that's a place I have not thought about in a while. Ireland's restaurant was across the street, and Steak and Ale. I lived in Antioch at the time. That was a happening place at one time in Nashville but it ain't now. You may have been there later than that. I have retreated to Nolensville at this time. That's still a nice place. But it's over priced and crowded. Love the channel, peace!
> Wow dude! You nailed it hard! Yet again another of your vids puts a big lump in my throat. I’m 58 (reformed & clean, it is oh so not easy) and the last 8 years have seen 15+ of my local music/art colleagues [Lanegan, Conner, Hollister, Cornell and a bunch of unknown never weres] drop dead or suicide or ‘death by misadventure’ way too soon from all the usual suspects (you can fill in the blanks) and a whole lot of close-calls too. Dreams die hard, a little double entendre there I guess, I think there’s even a few songs out there with that title. @badbrad thanx Brad, going through some of these things. My band, is having a tough tyme. There's many cliques up here, and it's tough getting booked. There's lots to this, bit I'm near ready to fold up. I've got 3 years under my belt, but band member have 30 plus years each of them. Just the fact they wanna play in this project, with me fronting is an honor. I had to learn to play guitar, guitar and harp same tyme, sing, and play some keys, in the space of 3 years still blows my mind. I have a serious autoimmune inflammatory disease too. Sorry man venting..
@TheFlat6 - May the cliques get clicked out-of-the-way, as you continue, while you walk with your best game-face, and pro- workmanship, and output with your team. Give the cliques to God, wish 'em well- and have improved instances where you can take care of yourself with autoimmune disease during this journey. You're creative- the cliques may have a certain strong-hold, yet you find other or additional ways around them- one's they never saw coming, and are ill- prepared to counter or obstruct. All the best to you as you navigate with your band today & forward
Yeah badbrad being in a band is a lot of work and not much pay. You practice the set lists alone almost everyday, band practice twice a week, perform a few times a month, hours of loading and unloading band equipment, then you get +/- $100/gig. Some guys get more. I knew a singer who sang on Bourbon Street in New Orleans who said he made more $ singing than he did at shipbuilder Halter Marine. P.S. Brad I found a song I wrote on a copy paper wrapper, lyrics & chords. I’ll type it in the Notes section of my phone before I lose the paper. Maybe some day I’ll play it. 👍
Every episode you put out would be great material for a song. Maybe that’s not the phase of life you’re in at the moment…but I’d definitely recommend keeping a little notepad with you and putting the bars of gold wisdom into bars of lyrics. Just a thought 👍💪🙏

Thank you! I appreciate you watching!
Well said!
Yeah man. The rock star thing didn’t work out; but the phone is still ringing.
Solid!
Yikes.
Wow that can be rough man. Hope you are in a better place.
That's great advice Brad, for anyone not just musicians!
Thank you!
Outstanding video and really needed to hear this. Applying this wisdom is healing and makes us better all around musicians.
Thank you so much!!!
Sagely advice here. Thanks for posting.
You bet!🙏
I wrote people off that belittle me, i know i have faults but never had much of a upbringing , so on lifes journey we need to focus on the future relizing we can't change the past, thats.where we learn from past and change our course to go in a new direction
You are right, we need to focus on the future!
Thankyou badbrad….great advice for reinvention…👍
Always welcome
Good stuff.. Thanks! Forget the therapy just listen to Brad everyone.
Much appreciated

Thanks Rev.
Got slicked black hair, skin tight jeans, Cadillac car and teenage dreams!
Indeed.
I wanna play in a band with this guy
Great guitar player
Man keep it up. Keep getting those subscribers. You deserve it.
Appreciate that! 🙏
You've been in my feed for days and I decided to check you out at a time I needed to hear this. I've already bookmarked this video so i can go through your stuff later but I really needed to hear this and I feel I needed to hear it from you for some reason if that makes any sense. Have a great day.
Wow, that's awesome. Thanks for sharing! Welcome aboard.
Learn from your mistakes and move on. Stay positive! Things never stay bad and they never stay good. Staying positive get’s you through the sucky times.

Roxanne...
You don’t have to put on the red light….
@@badbradLol y'all!
Peace.
Those days are over...
@@Ericsson09 - haha
Silverado's, now that's a place I have not thought about in a while. Ireland's restaurant was across the street, and Steak and Ale. I lived in Antioch at the time. That was a happening place at one time in Nashville but it ain't now. You may have been there later than that. I have retreated to Nolensville at this time. That's still a nice place. But it's over priced and crowded. Love the channel, peace!
It sure has changed a lot. I appreciate you tuning in. Nolensville is very expensive now...
> Wow dude! You nailed it hard! Yet again another of your vids puts a big lump in my throat.
I’m 58 (reformed & clean, it is oh so not easy) and the last 8 years have seen 15+ of my local music/art colleagues [Lanegan, Conner, Hollister, Cornell and a bunch of unknown never weres]
drop dead or suicide or ‘death by misadventure’ way too soon from all the usual suspects (you can fill in the blanks) and a whole lot of close-calls too.
Dreams die hard, a little double entendre there I guess, I think there’s even a few songs out there with that title.
Pay attention kids, badbrad is a Fount of Truth & Wisdom that could save your life and/or plenty of unnecessary misery, no joke.
Your presentations are the best combo of guitar clinic & therapy session out there.
Thank you and thank my lucky stars too.
Vaya con Dios …
I appreciate that you're here and that you're making it through. It's not easy.

I see a full studio, live in person interviews with live recording jams, and a friend/editor to help you out!
I like the way you think!
Diminished and Augmented?
Diminish bad influences and augment the positive
@badbrad yup didn't necessarily mean "chords"..
@@TheFlat6 I like how you think!
I'm glad you shared your experience!
Every episode you put out would be great material for a song. Maybe that’s not the phase of life you’re in at the moment…but I’d definitely recommend keeping a little notepad with you and putting the bars of gold wisdom into bars of lyrics. Just a thought 👍💪🙏
Awesome thank you!
Hey man I finally figured out how to make a video, I didn't know how to transfer files, it would only let me make shorts wich I didn't wanna do but you are the inspiration that has led me to this point even down to figuring out how to transfer files lol but I'm gona actually make a video finally!!! And for that I say thank you badbrad
Awesome! I'm happy to hear you're creating!
Guitar tone as lush as your hair

13:25 well you know what? You can be a hell of country guitarist. Some session players are killing it and have the best tone in guitar business. Those technics played on telecaster...
Ok

You’re absolutely right, be careful out there!
we called it drown night
Wow
@badbrad well actually the bars called it drown night. Usually wed or thursday to drum up business
Wow I love that intro can we hear the full song??
It's just a lick.....
80's bands that never got anywhere are being signed by record companies because that's how much people hate new music. Do a video on this.
Seems to be happening with old acts that have stuff in the can from back in the day.
@@badbrad My old band is getting all our demos released by a company in Greece
Psychoanalytical musician, I like that.
Thank you!🙏

TOXIC ? BUMMER.......

Then make a change for the better. Get out of the rut and do something to make your situation improved.
being a rock star sounds got but it's life-shortening, later in life you might not have any real community -- and maybe don't really know who your actual friends are
very true!
The guitar intro was beautiful i felt it love from philly❤❤
Thank you so much!!!!
