We have the same issue with the def pumps over here in the UK! It’s called adblu over here. But they are a pain for clicking off! If you can put a kink in the hose it seems to stop it from clicking off!
You made that look to difficult for these new driver on the road...😀. To many of these new drivers these days don't have that common courtesy to pull forward out of the way. Good you made a point to share that with you're followers about pulling out of the fuel island when done. Keep the wheels turning look forward to you're next video.

Great information video I think that most modern truck should have def/diesel fuel in the fairings as standard specifications. Peace and prosperity !!!!
I had a friend who pulled reefers for years, he showed me that a simple hand made flag he made from a coat hanger with a shop rag tied to it, that he could wrap or loop around the tank fill spout, beneath the cap, and just bend the hanger out so it stuck out to enough for the flag to show him exactly where the tank was in relation to the pump. He also said it can be as simple as a stick and a piece of paper towel, or even a piece of trash for the flag. Anything that could be harmlessly propped in there and be seen in the mirrors. This step is not always necessary for a pro, but it does eliminate the guess work. Hope this trick helps somebody out.
Excellent video today JJ. Very in depth on fueling your . I personally never drove a 579 but, the way that those fuel tanks are positioned is wicked crazy.. The DEF is no bargain either.. Question about the DEF and why it is using so much ? Why ? Is it a smaller tank or what ?? Just seems weird. Have a good one and thanks for sharing my friend.
2 tanks at 100 gallons each for my truck. 200 total. If I average 8 MPG, (depends on load weight, hills/mountains, wind, weather, etc...) I can get 1200 miles. That puts me at 1/4 tank. 1200 miles is covered in 1.5 to 2 days.
I watch hundreds of videos like this, not just filling gas in semi's, but I watch videos that teach me something I don't know, I try to view 25 a day, usually in early am ,but if you can do that over months ad months, you notice a big difference, im just saying if your bored of just skimming through videos do something fo yourself, like a little hobby. I'm 46 why not learn as much as I can
Amazing that something as simple as fueling can be a challenge. Lol. I know Peterbilt has different size DEF tanks. For weight I’d assume you got the small one. Love the black hub covers. Have you thought about getting a black grille? Stay safe bud. Thanks for another great interesting video
Hi JJ man your videos are always great. What is your expectation on steer tire miles before replacement and your tandem tires, what is your annual budget expectation, assuming you use premium tires?
I've been driving for just over a year now. Have your friend check out Prime. Of course, I'm a bit partial to them, but that's because they're good, especially for people just getting in to driving, or drivers who want to be with a good, solid company that's been around for decades. He can visit driveforprime.com/?r=PAUJAJ for more details, and if he signs up, please ask him to use my driver code as a referral :-) PAUJAJ
Hey JJ . Looks like winter is coming . Great video really enjoyed it. How did u connect pumpkin to the hood? Have u drivers been busy? R loads paying well ? Take care stay warm drive safe .
Hey Mark. Just a couple of zip ties and Mr Pumpkins is nice and secure. Yeah, freight is good right now and other than that one low paying load out of VT, it's been good. Update due tomorrow.
Hi JJ been following you for some time now and really like to see someone with common sense for a change. I was an OTR driver from 1972 thru 1989 back in the good old cab over days. I ran many different trucks and my favorite was a Freightliner Powerliner that had a Detroit 8V92TT that got 3 miles to the gallon in the mountains, but fuel was cheep and did not matter. I guess you can figure out how old I am now. Trucking has changed over the years I think to the better with technology but the professional driver has really gone down hill except for drivers like you. Its all about the training in my opinion. Anyway I was watching your video on fueling the Peterbuilt and not forgetting to put the cap back on and this is how I never forget. When I worked in the aviation industry we were trained when finished fueling to remove fuel hose and replace tank cap before putting the fuel hose down or away. If you follow this rule all the time you will never question yourself if you put the cap on or not. I do this with everything I fuel, even my lawn tractor. I you are not sure you put the fuel cap back on you can pull over and check. If you forget to put the fuel cap on an aircraft and it is not caught on preflight you can't just pull over in flight and the fuel will probably be sucked out due to air speed. Anyway put the cap back on before you put the hose away or put the fuel can away. Hope this helps and makes sense. Richard in Georgia
On my truck both tanks are the same size at 100 gallons a piece. Some trucks Have 125 gal, 150 gal or even up to 200 gallons. They can also be mismatched like 100 gallons on one side and 150 gallons on the other.
Every make & model of truck has its quirks hood or bad it’s a trade off you probably liked things Freight shaker better then the Pete and vica versa my recommendation is your next power unit should be a western star they do customization on the Mounting and location. Of. Hardware & switches & gauges & handles & what nots whithen reason yes they are a expensive truck but it’s your money maker office and home
Lots of moving around with the Pete’s... I still want one though. How long were you in the Cascadia before you got your Pete and went lease to own again?
I agree these would be better than screw on, but these ones are still a pain in the butt. I do like the ones on the Freightliner. It's a quarter turn and that's it.
hey JJ, i am new to trucking and really enjoy your videos. my question is reefer fuel just regular diesel fluid that you use in the truck? thanks for answering my questions.
Hey John. Good question. It is just a regular diesel that we put into the truck however it is not taxed. Some places add a red dye into it so that DOT can check to make sure we are not putting the tax-free fuel into the truck.
Hi JJ! Saw your video and I had a question that I hope you can answer on a video of yours. I hear truckers talk about fuel surcharge. Can you explain exactly how that works? Is that something you have to pay? OR, is that an item that gets paid to you? Hope all is well. Thanks!
Hey Elias. It's an item that gets paid to us. There's some calculations that Prime uses that takes a quantum scientist to understand, it it's basically a portion of the fuel costs that are given back to us to help out. It's in addition to the fuel discounts we get at the pump. Last week I paid $556 retail for tractor fuel. I got a discount of $150, plus a surcharge of $257. My net fuel cost was only $149! 6.1 cents/mile. Hope that helps answer it. Let me know if you have any follow up questions.
I love your videos man. Im studying to get my CLP and can't wait to drive for Prime hopefully in a couple months. I talked to a recruiter and they said I need to build up my job history a little bit so that what I'm doing. Do you have any recommendations for other youtubers I can watch.
Really cant understand in this day and age of modifications in aftermarkets, no one has made an add on pipe to the fuel tanks further back in an easier to reach spot...
Why don't you just reach under the fairings on the side unlatch them and pull them down like I do then when you're done all you have to do is snap on back in place they have two lapses in the center of each of the fairings that cover the fuel tanks all you have to do is just lower them down and then push them back up and snapping back in place it's like opening a door
I'm always cautios when I fill up on DEF at truck stops. If I can buy jugs of DEF in a store I'll do it. A close friends truck has gone through 3 DEF sensors. He thought the sensors were faulty because the dash light kept coming on but now he's thinking the DEF itself is the problem. He thinks it's actually bad quality DEF.
Maybe it's one of the stations that he regularly visits. Their tanks may be bad. It would be very rare For multiple stations to have a problem like that.
I feel like they should have made some sort of neck to go between the space between the cover and the faring...sorry don’t know the names of the parts. That’s a bad design of a station, the fact that the fuel islands don’t match up should not have been designed like that.
you made a mistake.when asked what's it like refueling a Peterbilt the correct response should have been " EXPENSIVE very EXPENSIVE " ..haha... why not fill the def first ? not locks on the tanks ? come to England and you would need to fill up every day..lol
Almost the same setup as the Volvo, I’ve stretched a few DEF hoses, keep up the great work

Great information JJ 🇺🇸🦅👍🏻
When the tank on freightliner is on the side where the fairing is you can just wedge the pump handle on the fairing where you fill the tank.

It depends on what tanks you get our trucks 579 fuel on the side like the freightliner but the hole is smaller.
What’s the total tank sizes and how far can you go with them?
2 tanks at 100 gallons each for my truck. 200 total.
If I average 8 MPG, (depends on load weight, hills/mountains, wind, weather, etc...) I can get 1200 miles. That puts me at 1/4 tank.

How many mpg do you get with your truck? Sorry if I have missed you answering this before!
Check out my last couple of weekly updates. I've started including that info into them for you guys.

No. This will help explain what DEF is.

Hi. JJ
That sucks, what a frustrating setup... how many litres? 1000?
200 gallons, or 760 Litres
Figured the tanks would be tied together so if you fill one it would fill both
There is a feeder hose between the two tanks however it would take a long time for the fuel to flow through that and fill the other tank.
Do u know anything about pnw trucking
No, haven't heard of them.
2 100 gallon tanks?
Yep
