- 5000 Volts is the name of a British disco recording act that achieved success throughout Europe during the 1970s. The group consisted of vocalists Tina Charles and Martin Jay, with a changing group of session musicians.
I remember this record being in the charts, when I was serving with the British Army in 1976, near Soest, West Germany.

Tina started out her career as a session singer & a live & studio backing singer same time as Elton John was doing the very same thing , although he was a
in-demand piano virtuoso also. She also had a few spots on tv too with a noticeable appearance on a Two Ronnies sketch in 71’
After being a in-demand singer working the circuit for most of the the first half of seventies m, she met Indian/British composer & record label owner Biddu ( Summer of 42 ) under his wings & direction she was soon to become a star in her own right , Biddu had just produced a massive hit with Carl Douglas ( Kung Fu Fighting ) .. Tina & fellow session singer Linda Lewis had just sang backing on Steve Harley & Cockney Rebels No1 hit in Make Me Smile ( Come Up & See Me ) in 1975 too , Linda would also soon become a star ‘ again’ not long after this , after having a hit song a few yrs previous in the summer of 73’ with ( Rock A Doddle Do )
Biddu believed Tina was gunna be the next big Disco thing ! Her first release just failed to chart ( You Set My Heart On Fire ) .. but the second single release in early 76’ went to No 1 & was one of the years biggest selling singles , she spent virtually the whole yr of 76’ in the charts with the follow up ‘Dance Little Lady Dance’ she continued with Biddu having Further hits like "Love Me Like a Lover", "Dr Love", "Rendezvous" and "Love Bug" which made her a big pop star everywhere but the USA . eventually as Disco wained by the end of the 70’s .. she was then asked by her then ex boyfriend , who’d previously toured with her as her live bass player & band member in her few years at the top with said singles above , a certain Trevor Horn who was now putting together a band & certain single ( Video Killed The Radio Star ) he need someone for harmonies, and eventually she helped out on the whole album ( The Plastic Age ) .. Trevor wanted her to sing with a American 50’s style twang for VKTRS song ..
..you can hear her also clearly on the very first song of 1980 .. in the first playlist below .. I’ve completed the whole 70’s check them all out , all in release order too & the very best sonically video of each song there is also … ( thank me later ) .. I’m half way through 1980 so far 🤓🎶👌🏻👇🏻

ON FIRE the flip side of the. 45 side b TINA CHARLES has a great voice I didn't know who she was I never heard of her but like I said the proof is what comes out of the speakers that's the end result at first I was thinking of the band or duo who did the song sweet dreams and who's that girl Annie Lennox and Dave steward but I guess not it they did it it be very bad I rather hear the band. 5000. I do not think this clip is from 1976; Tina Charles had been replaced by then. This is the very first line up of 5000 volts with Tina on vox then the clip is from 1975. Luan Peters took on the vocals before the end of 1975.

So who is the original vocalist?
Tina Charles (obviously seen here) was THE vocalist of "I'm On Fire". She wasn't contractually tied to 5000 Volts and wanted to pursue a solo career. When producer Biddu offered to produce her,she left the fold of 5000 Volts and releases several successful solo singles in the mid 70s. Another hit maker at the time Jim Gilstrap also released a version of "I'm On Fire". 5000 Volts did release several more singles (with Linda Kelly on vocals) to moderate success.

It's Tina's voice but 5000 Volts was a group who continually had musicians coming and going.....Linda was a great singer in her own right and has been unfortunately tarnished with this ongoing debate about who is singing this great song. Tina's vocal raspiness and power is unbelievable in this song, I think it got unduly catogegorised as a disco song but it's abundantly clear that Tina's soulfful voice was up there with the likes of Patti Label etc....Motown missed the boat on this one. Great singer and a great song. Cheers Gary
