  • Listen to Andy speak about the pride, spirit and spectacle of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Scotland. A spirit of its own: goo.gl/lBkE6A
A veteran of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, Piping has been a life-long passion for Andy who has had the honour of being the lone piper at this iconic event. Find out more about the Edinburgh Military Tattoo here: goo.gl/nPZN1E
Andy began his musical journey at just 10 years old, when his next-door neighbour offered to teach him the Scottish Bagpipes. After a couple of months, he had the bug and has been carrying on the traditions and culture of Scottish music ever since. Watch as Andy describes his own experiences of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo - from walking through the drawbridge of Edinburgh Castle and seeing the crowd when he was a boy to the flash of the spotlight signalling the beginning of his lament as the lone piper - and see the magical highlights of this uniquely Scottish celebration of music, dance and military pageantry.
Being in the military, in a Scottish regiment, it doesn’t matter where Andy goes, he always takes his ScotSpirit with him. Discover more of what makes Scotland unique here: www.visitscotland.com/about/u...

I will always remember playing the pipe up on the top of the Battlements at the Army School of Piping (Edinburgh Castle) as a young lad while Captain John MacLellan stood and watched on, what an honour it was. Will always remember that day with pride.

At the Edinburgh Tattoo sometime in the 1960's (Possibly 1966) the Lone Piper (Ian Morrison) appeared but didn't play the 'pipes....someone had pinched the reed from the pipe chanter!! The silence was embarrassing. However Pipe Major John Allan (Queens Own Highlanders) played the lament on his pipes from his position on the concourse and saved the day. Incidentally, Ian became the world champion piper at least on four years after this.

Moonsabie .....our Scots culture was not lost.....it was cleverly transplanted all over the world, where we Scots descendants maintain that special culture....note that the very first Prime Minister of Canada was John A. MacDonald, that the province of Nova SCOTIA thrives today....that Canada has raised 34 Scots regiments and 22 of them still fill ranks in our military Order Of Battle.....the very stones of our canals and even our Parliament and our Supreme Court were laid by Scots stonemasons.....there are over 400 lakes, rivers and villages, towns, counties and cities presently bearing Scots names....and recently Scots stonemasons laid the foundations of our long over due Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, at the very foot of our National War Memorial.....there are hundreds of further Scots cultural examples skillfully woven and expertly embroidered into Canada's national "fabric".....sign me...Major (retired) Scott Fuller, Canadian Forces 1964-2004, Life Member, The Murray Clan Society of Canada, ( mother: Isabella BALNEAVES, A Glasgow lass).

The Scots culture is there to be found within the US as well. It doesn't matter where you live if it was founded off of a British colony the Scottish culture is there lurking just beneath the surface waiting for those of us who care to come find it.

As if the queen didn't have to suffer enough indignities in the execution of her various duties, she has to grit her teeth patiently while her ears are tormented by some tallentless transvestite who squeezes the air out of a haggis through a set of droning, atonal, pipes. Fact #1, the bagpipes were invented as a sideline by a man who made his living designing medieval instruments of torture (they were only intended to drown out the prisoner's screams); Fact #2, Elizabeth is the Queen of England, not Scotland; Fact #3, the average Scotsman's ear for music is equivalent to the average North-African's natural ability to ski or to figure-skate.
