What I found with the original Wolf tooth (which is still new) is the opening of a chain link is difficult as it’s hard to get enough purchase on the link (using my fat weak fingers), the fix is to us a length of cord to help pull the chain link open.I had no idea the nut was for using on my bike, that is a cool new feature. Stay Home, Make Snowmen, Sleep Happy.

I patterned my kit after your previous, thorough video on this subject. It fits in my underseat bag, has full size tools and weight is not a huge consideration when bike pack TOURING! Racing, of course. But I am done racing after 10 years of triathlon. I really enjoy your bike packing videos. Keep up the good work.

Loved the video. I'm a huge fan of Wolf Tooth and have some of their pieces and parts on my bikes. Excellent job reviewing their new pack pliers. I about fell out of the chair laughing with your nod to the Campy folks. I have the original WT pack pliers plus a CB M17 as well in my kit. Have to agree with you that the M17 just can't be beat. Mine has served me well on many road rides and MB rides and even around the house. Truly enjoy your channel and have learned so much, keep it up!

@Hope they're all good, it depends what you need. I still use my M17... the only difference between m17 and m19 is a small Phillips screwdriver and a T10 torx - both of which I'm ok without. Difference between m19 and m20 is tire plugs/tool & valve core remover... if you don't already carry that stuff elsewhere, it might be worth it for ya... hope that helps :)

I received mine a few weeks ago and your review is spot-on with my thoughts. I though don’t like the clumsy and bulky feel of a typical multi-tool design as your M17. The feel of this pliers is great and I find the ability for accessing all the bolt locations on my bikes much easier. The ability to keep the tool engaged while turning and not constantly getting held up is worth the downsides. And yes, I do carry my park tool chain breaker as well, so there’s that. Keep up the great work!

I love my connex quick links no tools needed at all to remove chain use it on all my bikes! One of the only non campy chains approved by them on their group sets

Agree totally as I also use the M17 and original wolftooth together
By the time I would add a chain breaker , weight is almost the same , so I will stay with my original as I also like having 2 master links on hand in the tool

Fantastic review and real world usage and reasoning for carrying or buying the tool. I even learned something about this tool. I don't feel so bad buying it to make up a free shipping order. I don't have the m17 so I will buy a cheap chain break tool.

My favorite multitool is the Topeak Mini PT30, it contains all the stuff that i need, but I will add the Wolf Tooth Components Pack Pliers Master Link to my setup.
And btw, as a Brompton adventure rider, I prefer the Brompton tool kit, that fits perfectly in the frame of my folding horses and contains most of the tools you need in case of unhappiness ;-)

Hi, the two mm bit can be used on the Shimano push pin on the brake lever mounting so you can remove it without sliding it off and removing the grip of course.

Thanks for the review. My thoughts: like you, I find removing the bits to be a real pain in the ***. Also bits are east to loose. I carry a multi tool as primary and this tool for a limited number of features.

Was on the the fence about buying this tool. Have the M17 and find it to be a great all-rounder. Since I have the Wolftooth B-Rad Roll-top bag on all my mountain bikes and use to carry all the tools/supplies I need on the trail (prefer to kerp my waist hydration pack as light as possible) weight of the M17 wasn't a big concern. Larger B-Rad bag can hold a lot of items but it can be cumbersome when you need to pull items out trailside. Based upon this indepth review, just pulled the trigger on this tool and will carry the Park mimi chain break tool. Appreciate the thorough analysis and look forward to seeing how it pans out!

after two years of riding without a multitool, chain breaker, smart links etc, i decided tu invest and bought this multitool and the woolftooth chainbreaker hope I never need to use them (cause I never before) but my rides are getting longer and more technical so I'll let you know

The Wolftoith magnets are a blessing and curse. Cool to keep the bits fastened, but so strong its a faff to extract the bit yiu need!

CB M17 user here, think the Wolftooth pack pliers is a bit pricey for me, the bits are proprietary, being 4 mm.. wish they came with standard 1/4" bits it could be expanded if you need more bits like t30, t15.. or other allen bit sets.
But it is one tool i would like to purchase if it was avalable in the Philippines..

A 4mm shaft to 6.35mm (1/4 inch) female adaptor would address the expandibility issue with standard bits.. a bit extension would increase reach of this tool on recessed bolts. And probably a rubber band like the one that comes with the m17 to prevent the tool from swiveling while using and prevent the tool from accidentally opening and losing the attached bits.

Maybe it can use a small extension for those hex bits?. I find it difficult getting to one of the bolts in the rear brake caliper with my M19 multi tool.....

Wolftooth 3.0 should add a bit extension. The bits now are so short that function is limited to only the most accessoble bolts.
How does the tool work on the rear brake caliper bolt, where access is more challenging?
Works fine on my bikes:) but mine are fairly easy to access… can’t speak for all bikes… if yours is pretty tucked, might need a longer Allen key… ride on!!

Are the bits standard hex size? (6mm) I'm aware that they are double ended so the ones supplied are specific WolfTooth but was wondering if the tool also works with standard bits. Great video though.
I understand they are smaller at 4mm. Wiha makes bits that size so there are some options....
I like my one up but it has no valve nut tool which I need.

I already broke the valve core cleaner. I dropped it on the concrete and the skinnier end of it broke off which makes it more difficult to stay in place when folded up. Total pain in the ass. It's also very difficult to get the little tools out of it. I find myself getting a fingernail underneath the tool that I need and it flips out and falls on the ground and I spend time searching Through the grass or the dirt trying to retrieve it

I do USE Connex links. I also run Connex chains on several bikes. But on bikes with KMC or Shimano chains I also use Connex links. But then heck, I also wax my chains in a crockpot. So what do I know! I ride about 5K miles per year. I have been using Connex chains, 11 speed and 8 speed, for over 5 years. I did research on Connex chains before buying my first one. For my money (based on my experience), Connex chains are best bang for the buck.

@@DirtyTeethMTB I only have 1 "mountain bike". However, I am 76 years old and do not do any real mountain biking. Most of my riding is on roads, 50% on paved and 50% on gravel. I have never tried bikepacking. As a rule I rewax the chains on my bicycles every 200 to 250 miles. I have 6 bikes that I alternate between. Therefore I don't know how many miles per year I put on any one bike and/or chain. I have never had a chain break during a ride. I'm unable to say if never breaking a Connex chain is due to the chains themselves or the fact that I regularly maintain them.

@@DirtyTeethMTB Thank you! I should mention that I live in northern Wyoming. Since you were in Pinedale you know what winter biking is like in Wyoming. I try to ride thru the colder winter months in order to maintain at least some level of fitness. Studded tires. 45Nrth boots. Bar mitts. Etc.
For icy and/or snow packed paved or gravel roads I ride a beater gravel bike with 35 mm Schwalbe studded tires. At one time I had a fat bike. I got rid of it before studded fat bike tires became available. In 1 to 2 inches if fresh snow the 35 mm studded tires do well. If there is more that 4" of fresh snow I don't ride until highways have been plowed or until the snow has been packed down by vehicles.
In the area I live in owning a fat bike for riding on snow isn't practical because there are only maybe 5 miles of trails where one could use a fat bike. The city maintains the trails. I.e. the trails get plowed. So 35 mm studded tires work well enough.
I use a topeak 20 tools

@@DirtyTeethMTB I ended up ordering the one without the chain tool. The only sacrifice is the spoke tensioner, and I've never had to mess with spokes on quality wheels on the road before, so hopefully it doesn't backfire. Saved $30

So I would still need to carry a separate chain tool, and separate pliers (because the Wolf Tooth does not have side cutters). That's a pass from me.

hard to get the chain parts out of this, need a pry tool.and the tire tool will damage the tire or rim, needs electrical tape for my use. wolf tooth is pricey. odd shape. meh. I am on a budget.

Thanks for watching and chiming in, Matt X :) - over the years, I've dealt with some pedals that use 10mm hex, but Crank Bros, Shimano, Look, Time, Speedplay, Xpedo, HT, Issi, etc use 8mm or 6mm (all my personal pedals currently use 8mm) - but yeah, if you're pedals require a 10mm or a traditional pedal wrench, then you'd be out of luck this this tool and most multi-tools on the market... Ride on!!
