  • This video tracks the day I had my Ulnar Nerve Transposition Surgery to 28 days (or four weeks) post operation. I give advice about how to recover, what to expect, and general dos and don'ts.
Although I draw upon personal experience, friends who have had the surgery, and my physician, I myself am not a doctor. Nothing in this video should be seen as mandatory and your results may vary.

I just had my ulnar nerve transposition two months ago. I had the subfascial transposition with a nerve block. I recovered very quickly. Had full grip strength back at day 3. Doing push-ups at day 14 and went back to full on weights at day 28. Great video btw brotha’ 🤘

Nice man! And thanks for the compliment! I think my physical therapist and doctor were trying to move me along a little slower just to be extra cautious. I was reading on the internet that some people were progressing faster than my time table - such as yourself. So I apologize if my tips are lagging by a week or so. But I'm glad you're getting back to full health! Keep it up man!!

Dallas thanks for sharing your experience. Does your arm feel weird when you rest it on a surface, where there's pressure on the nerve? Or if hit your arm on something does it feel more vulnerable?

@@xt3708 not really no. So to be fair I had another separate surgery for snapping triceps. That was the main cause of my elbow discomfort. My nerve will on occasion have some pain. It’s very rare though. Doesn’t hurt when I bang my arm as the nerve is now under the muscle so anatomically speaking it’s more protected this way

honestly thanks so so so much for making this! just had a transposition surgery done a few days ago. thanks heaps for all the tips! best video on UA-cam on the topic! can't say thanks enough, I've been feeling so defeated due to 10/10 pain the last 2 days after the operation, with thoughts of if I made the right decision. I'm feeling a lot more optimistic now. I did the op so I could get more into gym stuff, my nerve kept going over the cubital bone and would upset my entire right side of my body lol, from my right hip, armpit, right abs upto the top of my head for 2 and a half years. bloody hypermobility . will be sure to check out your future videos. seriously thanks a million, on a side note I went to uni for video and editing, your camera work, editing, audio, flow, arrangement of shots for interest is seriously so good, you deserve a lot more recognition! can't believe you could do all this whilst dealing with the symptoms and recovery, it makes it even more impressive! motivating to see you training like that for sure.

Such a helpful video bro! Had surgery yesterday, looking forward to recovering and this video had a lot of great pointers. I’m very optimistic cause im young (20 y/o) and my nerve is on top of the muscle instead of cut into my muscle. Only thing im really questioning is the feeling of the popping not being there anymore (which is good), but I’ve had it for about a year now. So as a baseball player it was really annoying but I’ve dealt with it for so long that I can imagine it being odd for it not to be there anymore especially when I swing.

Thank you for sharing your experience. It's really hard to find first hand information. I've been dealing with my pain for over a year and saw several surgeons. Two of them want to do subcutaneous/Under the skin. That sounds weird to me having the nerve still in vulnerable place. That's why I want to do sub muscular like you had done, but I know that’s a more serious surgery. Can you share any thoughts about that? Did your surgeon offer you both options?

    • @Grant_Rivers

Thanks!! My surgeon felt like submuscular was the only way to go. He told me since I am an athlete it would solve my issue once and for all. Now looking back on it I can see why. I feel like my nerve easily glides under the muscle without issue, it's protected, and since it is next to a healthy blood source it feels like it recovered very quickly. I'm bias, but I am glad I went with the submuscular transposition. I hope this helps!

I just had ulnar nerve release surgery on both of my arms. My left arm and then two weeks later they did my right arm.
I had years of pain and numbness in both elbows, both hands (ring fingers and pinkies completely numb for years but painfully numb)
Anyway, my left was not as severe as my right. My left has healed quickly. My right has been extremely painful and has been healing very slowly. Of course I still have pain in my left arm as it's still healing. Surgery was 3 weeks ago. I have feeling back in my hand and fingers. I have SOME strength back in my hand and still cannot fully extend my arm without pain. My right arm, done 8 days ago, is still extremely painful, and I still have no strength in my right hand. The right side required a lot more surgical intervention. Due to the severity of both arms, and the work I do, I've been placed off work for 12 weeks. I forgot to mention I actually had two procedures done at once on both arms. Ulnar nerve release and also they removed the Bursa from both my elbows. My point - pain and length of recovery is dependent on the severity of the entrapment. It's very uncommon to have ulnar nerve damage in both sides but I wasn't so lucky.
That numbness under your elbow and over your scar may never go away. Good luck.

Hey Nate! I hope your recovery is going well. The first 10-14 days are always the worst. Definitely rest up for sure. I didn't experience any popping like before the surgery but this is mostly because I had my arm in a sling for the first couple weeks. So I didn't really bend my arm early on to test it out. I actually just threw javelin today. I am at month #7 and there was no popping. I'd say give things more time and definitely talk to you doctor if you are nervous about anything.

I have an appointment with an elbow specialist next month because I think my ulnar nerve is subluxating over my elbow as well. Whenever I have my arm bent for example and straighten it to do a bicep curl for example, I feel something move over the inside part of my elbow… the ulnar nerve is the only thing I can think of that might be causing that uncomfortable feeling. Anyways, since there’s not much pain or numbness, if I do get the surgery, recovery should be rather quick correct??

I was in a rear end car accident in January 2020. From that car accident I had pain in my right wrist right away. I was going to PT until the beginning of March when COVID was getting bad. Around August/September 2020 I got new symptoms which was numbness and tingling in my pinky and ring finger. Originally I was just seeing a general orthopedic doctor. My sister who is a doctor suggested I looked for a wrist specialist doctor. I tried all of the conservative methods first. PT, prescriptions, wearing a brace, cortisone injection, but nothing was helping with the pain. So on December 1st 2020 I got TFCC repair, debridement and Cubital Tunnel Release. The Cubital Tunnel Release was supposed to help with the numbness and tingling symptoms. Recovery was discouraging at the beginning for me, but eventually recovery was starting to look up, unfortunately I randomly hit a bump in my recovery. My wrist started hurting more again and now bending my elbow was causing pain and irritation which wasn’t happening before. In October I had a follow up and we did another cortisone injection into my wrist. I hit the 1 year mark in the beginning of this month. Last Thursday December 9th I had my follow up appointment. The cortisone injection was basically being used for diagnostic testing. Unfortunately the cortisone injection provided me no relief. The doctor told me that since the cortisone injection provided me with no relief then the cause of my symptoms are probably caused by my elbow nerve. He did say that the next step would be to transport the ulnar nerve to another area in the muscle so it’s not in the elbow. He did say that this surgery is normally standard procedure. Though we also have to keep in mind that the cubital tunnel release didn’t help me with my symptoms so apparently that is rare. I am scared of getting another surgery and it wind up not being successful or worth it. I do want to feel better and I would like my right arm to feel like itself again. I haven’t officially scheduled my surgery yet, but my doctor did advise me that I shouldn’t leave it past February/March.

I’ve probably recovered 80-85% of my strength in the weight room. My forearm is still numb from time to time, but fingers don’t tingle or feel fuzzy like they did before my operation.
My doctor decided I needed the surgery because my nerve was floating so much during some of his pre operation tests, you could see it moving back and forth over my elbow bone. I couldn’t throw javelin pain free whatsoever. The whole experience was painful. I hope this helps!

I've never held any ink tools in my hand before so I'm not entirely sure how heavy your equipment is. I could hold a Powerade bottle pretty easily after a few weeks, but I think where you may run into issue is the vibrations running through your tool into your arm. I remember the nerve being very sensitive for several weeks after the surgery so I think the vibrations might aggravate your arm. But this is all speculation. You might have no issues whatsoever! :) I have another video called "Ulnar Nerve Transposition Rehab | Flosses, Glides, & Weighted Exercise" it dives a little deeper into the timeline load that I had. So maybe check it out and it'll answer a few questions!

The pain you have depends on the severity of the entrapment and how much work the surgeon has to do. Sometimes they have to relocate the nerve. Sometimes they have to literally grind away parts of the bone to make room for the nerve. Yes, the skill of the surgeon is important but the pain isn't based off the surgeon you have but the severity of the nerve damage.

    • @Grant_Rivers

I never tried to do pull ups super early in my recovery because my arm always felt sensittive. I actually did band assisted pull ups yesterday (4 sets for 4 reps) and I'm at 7 months recovery now. The pull ups felt great. I probably could have done them without the band but I like to be catious and build into things. No exercises in the gym (clean, bench, military press, snatch) cause me any issue, but the key is to give the arm time to heal. :)

If you’re going through comments, wishing someone has found a solution for elbow popping, stop here for a second. I have popping in my left elbow. It is not THAT severe. I fell during a basketball game and that was that. I have had it since about 3 years ago and it looks like it’s not gonna leave soon. It used to pop while doing push ups, pullups. Dips were completly out of idscussion. I have gone through all comments of most of the videos on this subject on youtube whishing I could find something other than surgery. For me, I found an exercise that functioned really well. That is the „glasses” exercise. You make an „ok” sign with your right hand, for example, turn it upside down and put that onto your right eye. You’ll se example of this exercise on videos on youtube. I did this exercise for a few days.. now and then. After about 2 weeks, I could do dips almost no problem. During push ups and pullups it does not pop anymore. With dips, it still pops every now and then, but it is the technique I still have to work on to fully eliminate it. But I CAN DO DIPS without popping and pain for the most part. I had almost lost any hope. This is a miracle for me. And this is only the start. I included this exercise in my warm up routine. I strongly believe that if I continue to do this exercise regularly, I will not have problems whatsoever with training. ( I am not sure about weighted calisthenics and lifting weights though. But at this point, I am really content with being able to do calisthenics with no limitations). Wish you all the best!

Is anyone else having near total numbness in the ulnar half of the hand more than a month post-op? Honestly getting worried sensation will never return. (It was like this before the surgery)

How are you feeling now? Did you talk to your doctor and give them this feedback? Hopefully you’re feeling better

@@Grant_Rivers I did speak to the surgeon and he referred me for occupational therapy. That’s been helpful for loosing up the tightness in both my elbow and hand (also had carpal tunnel release at the same time), as well as desensitizing and strengthening. But, yeah, still numb. Going on 13 weeks since the surgery.

@@Belgaer I am going off memory here so apologies, but I believe I stated in one of my videos I saw the most improvement with numbness in months 5 and 6… then at a year I was vastly improved and from there things have only gotten better. Obviously I only had ulnar nerve surgery so my operations were slightly different but I’m hoping things are slowly improving for you and continue to do so over the next two months. I’m rooting for you!

@@Grant_Rivers Thank you! Gotta just trust my body, I guess. It’s just sketchy having numbness like this for 4 straight months at this point. Nerves heal about an inch per month, supposedly, but the process may be delayed by about 4 weeks, so I may start feeling improvement soon. Time will tell.

How was your PT after surgery?

He was a really cool dude and it wasn’t too bad to be honest. Pretty straight forward. Just had to be patient and trust the process.

    How did you sleep?

    • @Grant_Rivers
      @Grant_Rivers  2 роки тому +1

Terribly for the first 10-11 days. It was some of the worst sleep I've ever had. But it's still worth it because when you get past the first week and a half everything improves drastically. You'll thank yourself for fighting through the discomfort.

This my problem and haven’t had surgery yet
I cut my hand pretty deep and now I overused my other arm so sleeping now is just like no sleep 😒

And there is nothing wrong with that. Every doctor is different! 👌🏾 The most important thing is to trust your doctor because they are the professional. This video is just my personal experience.

I just had open cubital carpal on left. July 5 I go for right. I have had swelling and today is day 8, the dr office said I MUST come Monday (12 days) to get stitches out .. schedule conflict on their end... 12 day stitch removal .. I feel that could be too soon but I could be wrong. Alternative is keep stitches over three weeks
