It's so satisfying to know that there are still musicians out there who understand, appreciate, and employ dynamics. And, as usual, the musicianship is off the charts. Thanks for posting!
I couldn't agree more!!!
And when they suddenly cut . . . then crack back in . . . . EPIC!!
Hahahaha YES!
That “behind the beat” feel at the end is made famous by the almighty hip hop producer J. Dilla! He has been behind a defining component to modern musicians because of his contribution to modern jazz and hip hop musicians. The drummer Chris Dave and his colleague, Robert Glasper have delve deep into this style. That Dilla swing is purely INFECTIOUS!
It’s had an amazing effect!
Love your reactions! This song is excellent. Some others to check out from this session are “Quartermaster”, “Young Stuff”, and “Bent Nails”.
But the crowning jewel from this session is “Thing of Gold”. Would love to see you react to that one. It will change your life!
Oh man…I gotta check that out now 😃👏
YES. Thing of Gold is amazing. 😭
Also Minjor!
I don't think there is a Snarky Puppy song I don't enjoy. Everything they do is just pure class and talent.
I with you there!!!
Something I realized while watching this video again is how much I love the way they layer unique textures. Along with being both rhythmically and harmonically perfect, they know exactly how to compliment one another. Nothing else quite like it in modern music imo. They're kind of an advanced evolution of the big band genre.
Exactly! But, as I am from Germany, do you know the works/collabs of WDR (a broadcast service) BigBand e.g. with Jacob Collier ua-cam.com/video/rHiwjDyifKI/v-deo.html or interpreting Sun Ra ua-cam.com/video/rZoYOulxwQo/v-deo.html This Big Band is famous for it´s formidable adaptive possibilities to fresh arrangements of numerous styles and genres. Or german Frankfurt Radio Big Band with Scary Pockets ua-cam.com/video/RHu0ALxqUIo/v-deo.html
Absolutely!
@@matto9734 WDR Big Band is THE BOMB! So inspirational. One of my faves was the thing they did w Bob Minzer and Louis Cole & Genevieve Artadi (a.k.a. "Knower") doing "Gotta Be Another Way". Killer killer killer. Of course there are tons of other super cool videos of WDRBB out there too
I think this is my favourite Snarky Puppy track tbh, that bit right at the end, when you think the song’s over… and they come back with that slightly-behind-the-beat section. I just can’t! 💖
Also, that “thing” at the end sounds a lot like a guitar with some kind of… plate reverb(?) with a long tail and is like 50+ with the wet parameter. I can see the shape on the fretboard, it’s like half the strings are just barred!
The percussion and especially the drums were superb.
Only way I can describe this whole song is intoxicating
Yes!
Snarky Puppy, Metropole Orkest - The Clearing IS ONE MASTER PIECE YOU SHOULD REACT TO
'Binky' another great choice. Also possibly from the same recording is Mr. Montauk - the violin solo by Zach Brock just blew me away. Not rainy tonight here in Glasgow but we have the world looking on because of the Cop26 Conference. Cheers G
I know I am late to the party on this reaction, but if you haven't heard it yet, search for "Snarky Puppy Dunlop Sessions" and check out the version of Binky that is in that video. It isn't drastically different, but check out the Flugel solo on that version. He plays through some sort of wah pedal, and it is awesome!
I keep coming back to this ☺ what a track and love to see your reaction mate 👍🏻
Absolutely incredible hairs on neck music.
P. S. a live band made it sound like someone faded the track out. Incredible Never heard that before live. That's what u call dynamics.
Thank you! Ya man what a track!!!
Yes yes yes yes yes!!!
You should see the another version of this song Where Shaun And Cory add some Funk/Gospel fusion.
Oh heck ya, send me a link if you have one! :)

Maybe the most complimentary drumming I've ever heard.
Totally agree!
This is an encyclopedia of (US)American music blending everything from African polyrhythms, Blues, Jazz, orchestral arrangements, killer grooves and odd times in the most modern, accessible way... HOLY COW, the ending just caught me by surprise and beamed me into into pocket HEAVEN lol
What a Binky!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Binky is a pacifier if i remember correctly 😄
@@StrateleStudios Yeah, looked that up in my online dictionary and I love the title for that a**-kicking smoothie ;-)
@@matto9734 😂🤣😂
Listen to the drummer's bass drum beats, very expert. And you are quite right about the high bass guitar.
Jeff, you are showing your asynchronously side
Pretty sure the sound at the end was a guitar with a lot bright and reverb. Sounds like a Reggae tone on the guitar.
yeah, I agree. Def
Very cool.
YES!!!! Finally Binky!!!!! This drumbeat kills me! How does he pull off that crazy ass beat???? PERCUSSION is right!!! He is the glue! That guitar in the middle ... WHOA just beautiful! Brass section never disappoints and of course the keys that follow that section...then POW!.... they go into that funky breakdown. I loved this!!!!!! Great reaction once again #GOAT
It’s law that you have to listen to Young Stuff after binky, I don’t make the rules 🤷♂️
😂🤣😂
Just when you think it couldn't get any better they drop into the stinkiest west coast groove you've ever heard. This track is pure magic.
Hahaha yes!
Yes! The middle section is my favorite - the dreamy quality giving way to the crescendo is sublime. Gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.
Sooooo good
Loved that. Snarky puppy have such a hive mind.. 🙌
That sound was defo Bob.. you can tell by the look on his face when he did it 4 bars earlier and it sounded so perfect 🤓🎸
So awesome
Oh, hive mind is a fitting term for how they are working!
Shaun Martin is the joker on Moog. That's his spice added to the mix. League's not expecting it, but is completely amused by it. Maz on flugel is the master of the mellow brass tone.
Hahaha that’s what I loved about it. League is so entertained by it! 😃
When it switched at the 8 min. mark I''m not sure if that's a different song or another element in the same song but the beats reminded me of the song "GRETEL" When they played with METROPOLE ORKEST
The sound at the end is a reggae style muted quick guitar strum, with lots of reggae fx on it :) You can actually see it in the video, but also a better view of the strum is at 9:24. As always, great reaction!
Wow…you know I heard the exact same sound on Mike Oldfield’s “Tubular Bells” so my ears perked up! Thank you for this comment!
So, you know I'm a diehard SP fanboy, and buy a lot of the scores (to study or make arrangements), and Mike League includes notes with every chart (always informative and interesting). Here's an excerpt from the notes for this tune: "As for the title, we used “Afropup” for a while (I couldn’t think of anything that made sense). Normally, song titles reveal themselves to me in a natural way that relates deeply to the emotion or imagery that I’m trying to convey musically. In this case, I went months of playing it with no luck. I got desperate one night in Birmingham (Alabama, not UK) and asked people to scribble out song titles on napkins at the conclusion of the tune. There were some pretty funny suggestions, and there was “Binky.” It just sounded right. Sometimes you have to go with your gut."
Oh man this is awesome! Thank you so much for posting this Mark! 😃😃😃
The sound was reverbed guitar.
The playful synth licks were all Shaun Martin; flugelhorn solo Mike (Maz) Maher
I believed know snarky puppy but actually I don't 😭😭 OMG how could this song been hidden to me !!! what a tragedy
hahahaha
That synth sound you mention is played by Justin Stanton, who also plays trumpet in several songs.
Interested to hear your thoughts on this track from the same session... ua-cam.com/video/8pYHLfKqHL4/v-deo.html ...if the first phrase of the bass solo doesn't affect you, something's wrong!!!
That bass solo is absolutely beautiful. I loved that he had an octave pedal on it so you could really hear the notes he was playing. So cool.
The part somewhere between 6.00-7.00 was beautiful and very calming ✨🌙 Also like the solos from the brass section.
Yes!!!!!
That drummer was 'born' for this song!
Right?!!!!
Sput composed the drum rhythm for this track
@@Antre14 Sput is brilliant.
You should check out the version of this from the session they did with Dunlop for how they've flipped it over the years.
'Binky,' starts off like no other song. It is lithe, supple, and BADASS!!
Such a great tune! I love going for the Snarky Puppy rides!
The Clearing feat. metropole orchest will blow your mind :D
I have to check that out! 😃
'Binky' is bad to the bone.
You know it Wade!
Have you listened and reacted to Snarky Puppy feat. Becca Stevens & Vasen - 'I Asked?'
That looks amazing! I just added it to my list, Wade! 👏👏👏😀
I can't get enough of this band, they really lift my spirits :-)
Me too!!! 😃😃😃
Everything Snurky Puppy is great OFC, but i`m still waiting for you to check out "Sleeper" :)
You should react to Flood. That was a good one
I'll check it out!
Oh yeah, I love this one.
Flugelhorn by Maz Maher
Maz is the MAN!
Do. Bent. Nails!
O. K.
Sound at the end is guitar w tons of reverb
Love that sound! Reminds me of Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield
@@StrateleStudios this is such a fun tune. I did a big band arrangement, we played it with the SFJAZZ Monday Night Band a few years ago, was tons of fun (there's a video of a performance on UA-cam, search "binky monday night band" if you feel like it)
@@mgbasinski oh hell ya I’m m gonna check that out! 👏👏👏
How can you not smile listening to this! Beautiful!
Right, Jim?! 😃
I don't actually think they needed the second half of this piece. They could have just made that a different song. The first section was a complete statement all on it's own.
After reading your comment I went back to listened to it again. I think you are 100 percent right, my friend. It could have been another killer song.
That second half was expanded out to like 20 minutes with a couple of modulations and a link straight into Young Stuff when I caught them live. It does feel like a vestigial limb in the original recording though. I'll give you that.
@@themennissvids that makes more sense! Thank you!
This sound at the end, i guess the 3 guitars with nice delay/reverb ;)
Reminds me of the same sound in the Mike Oldfield song “Tubular Bells”
Wow!! A new gem this friday evening, apparently missed this one from SP. Awesome groove and feel. Really nice pick, thanks!! I think those two hits ringing out at the end was the guitar (loads of reverb??) 😀
Sounds right! That sound reminds me of something I’ve heard in “Tubular Bells” by Mike Oldfield.
