Waco Surf - Wave Pool Breakdown - know before you go - Firewire FRK+ and Sharpeye FT

- I went and surfed BSR Waco Surf Wave Pool and although it was my second time there, it was a lot different this time. I learned a lot about the waves and wanted to share my experience.
I have some recommendation regarding private sessions if you ever plan to do one. Something that will save you a bit of time and put more waves in the water. Watch till the end to find out.
Lastly, I want to go back ASAP, but I also want to do a straight hour of air waves only. I am certain I can stomp an air reverse in one day. it has been 1.5 years since my "52 Year Old Learning To Air Reverse" video so I have to getter done.
Fingers crossed that it happens soon. In the pool, I know it can happen.
In case you were wondering, the boards in the video are the Firewire FRK+ and Sharpeye FT
IMPORTANT: I did mention price in case they change. But you can check the current rates on their website: www.wacosurf.com

Been watching your stuff on & off for a while, your surfing has improved technically. Good job, just goes to show the more you do the results will come.
thanks brotha. Yeah, to boot, I'm not naturally gifted by any stretch of the imagination. LOL. I have to really analyze and change things to make it work. Thank god for soloshot and camcorders back in the 90s. I feel like there is this sweetspot for learning too and once you get past it, it harder cuz of bad muscle memory. Appreciate the support. Cheers.
Amazing video!! I can’t wait to make a trip up there!! Thanks you, Thomye!!!
Going to my first session there in June. Thanks for the detailed breakdown.
Great video! Your airs are getting better and better. Looking forward to the next board review.
thanks brotha. I only got 2 cracks at the air wave so what you saw were my only 2 left attempts. I didn't have any speed so I was super surprised how high it launched me. I definitely need to go back for that wave. :)
Great video, thanks for sharing!
Love your reviews! Really makes me understand how will the surfboards work for me. Thanks a lot!
Really wanted to hear about the Revo though... Hopefully you'll do a review about it 🙏
Hoping to get it out soon. I talked about it in the waco surf video but just a small bit. I was surprised it didn't go well in the pool for me. I took it out on some smaller days in newport and if felt tight and hard to surf so I thought maybe the pool would fix that but it didn't. :( Now I have to wait for some decent conditions so I can speak to it more accurately.
But that one will be coming soon. I just need to figure out what waves it will do well in.
If you book and stay at their hotel overlooking the wave pool, you get access to spots earlier then the general public. You can even have them look at the days you are looking at staying, to see how "open" the slots are. It may have changed, but this was last year
thanks for the info. when you say you get early booking, is that for public pool time or private?
@Thomye Surfs for public time slots. So you can try and plan/book for several sessions instead of 1hr sporadically.
You also get a discount on private sessions
We're going back this Fall for our 3rd annual trip. Taking our bodyboarding club.
that's awesome. I'm also trying to figure out if I'll be able to go in October. I'll be in Austin so thought maybe a visit might be in order. :)
@ThomyeSurfs do it bro! I can't wait!
Great video brother! It's such a fun setup!!! I can't wait to make a trip up there!
I just learned that the one you went to is the same tech. I am guessing they run it smaller cuz of liability. I wonder how big they can make that poll get.
@@ThomyeSurfs 3-4 ft at take off.. then in 2 seconds it drops down to ankle slappers😂 you can’t even compare to Wacko Wave Pool. It’s built for desperate East Coasters🙈
Thx looking for info I needed
I will probably never get to surf a wave pool, but I found this video super informative. I enjoyed watching.
Review the frk+ soon?
Yes. I will likely have to do two reviews of the FRK+. One with pool waves and another with ocean waves.
Love your forehand snaps, very aspirational , got that nice flare in the tail. Have you got a tutorial video on that?
not specifically. a top turn is a basically a heel side turn which I do have a video on. The only thing is as you finish the turn, you just karate kick the back foot and retract the front foot. I think I can make a video on that top turn. Let me think about it a bit. Got to figure out how to translate that easily into action.
I remember , they used a plastic cover on bottom but that was grand opening. I want to visit today. What are the fees and time open. I plan to work in Waxahachie Texas…. I remember the lazy river, everyone in intertubes. They asked, you want a beer? Yea, I tried German beer, amstadam beer, english guys brought there beer, made so many friends. The others side of park is the cable park part. Well, summer time is best time to go. That generator, changes the direction f the wave.. Great work. My friends asked me about the place, but I just say, its cool. I plan to send your vide to my surfbuds.. thank again..
they took that liner out. It was slippery too but now its sort of feels like smooth concrete. it can probably still rough up your skin and board like it did mine. This last trip, the park was still closed. I think the lake was even dry if I remember correctly. Pretty fun place.
Thanks for the awesome breakdown! Looking into booking an intermediate or advanced session but can’t decide. Was the public session in the video an advanced wave, and what wave type did you pick for the private session? Lastly, how do you think an older Kolohe Andino Mayhem would perform? Thank you for the insights!
The current waves in the video were advanced. There is an older clip from 2019 which is the intermediate. It's the clip in high speed. The ones where I got barreled are advanced. The board should be fine but if it isn't they do have a good selection of rentals. And it's not that expensive. I saw a guy surfing an intermediate wave in a different group and it looked fun too. It's just a little bit smaller and the wall is longer. Similar to wave 1 but just smaller.
Perfect, really appreciate your reply! Your video is definitely the best breakdown I’ve come across
Dude your surfing is so good! How did you get your video footage? Do you have a SoloShot or do they provide video like Slater's pool? For the private sessions, did you try any of the other wave settings? Making my first trip to Waco in a month.
They provided a video person for the private sessions we booked. I'm not sure if you have to pre-plan that. For regular public sessions they have the same guy but he only takes pictures from what I saw. You can purchase those pictures online.
you are going to thoroughly love it. I am trying to figure out a way to get back there. haha I can't let too much time pass, I definitely want to build on what I learned. Muscle memory these days is much harder to set.
Very good analysis of the facility and wave dynamics. On the wax you were using (Im assuming you went in the warmer weather) was it a warm water wax? Been surfing for 50 years and the last 20 have been performance long boards (9') will that be too long for these sets. Id be able to catch the wave even before the machine starts pumping. 😎. If not Id probably have to rent their 8' foamy. Im in AZ now and there isnt any freaking water here. Thanks for the heads up on that middle of the country surf spot.
I'm in a 3/2 so if I remember correctly, the water was around 68 to 70. Cool wax is what I used. probably could have used warm but didn't want it to be too hard and slick. As for boards, I'm not sure what the rules are for length. I did see some longer boards in the intermediate session. The intermediate waves are smaller but more importantly, the waves isn't as cupped out and stretches longer on the face so feels more like a nice wave vs a pocket wave. not sure the advanced would be any fun on a longer board.
@@ThomyeSurfs 👍
@@scottgorman7166 one thing though, i know that the pool can get much warner during peak summer months. but if you go the their wacosurf website, right at the top of the page, they give you the water temp for that day. :)
@@ThomyeSurfs 👍
November would be my choice
I haven't been to Urban surf in Melbourne but I think lefts and rights run constantly. They are slowly building another pool in Sydney which I'll certainly go to. $90 an hour 😬
that wave cove technology by wavegarden seems pretty legit. I want to visit the one in South Korea too, I heard it is a larger pool and can produce bigger waves but they never run it that way unless you get private sessions. Some day, definitely on the bucket list to go to South Korea and Australia.
Hi Thomey
Make a video about your weight loss and how it changed your surfing performance and the boards youre using now
Thanks
great idea. it will be embarrassing showing pics of "happy Thomye". LOL but definitely useful for anyone in the same boat.
@@ThomyeSurfs lol, dont need to show pics, just your experience before and after loosing weight and how it would open more doors
Ill definitely motivate some
@@ThomyeSurfs by the way, weight loss videos in general have thousands and millions of views
@@Carlosferreira1983 true. before and after pics is proof it works.
How did you record your sessions? Do they offer this recording service at the pool?
They do have someone. in a public session, from what I can tell, they have a photographer. He only takes pictures from what I have seen but since we had a private session, instead of taking pictures, we requested video. It was included. it was pretty cool. The crazy part was, we surfed at 8am and due to a lightning storm, one of our heats got moved to 9pm. That guy video'd all our heats. He was there pretty much 13 hrs.
Great review. Wish I could go but I’m one of those guys who can’t justify the cost. I would rather spend a week in Hawaii. Looks awesome though 🤙🏾
I don't know bro... I went to HI and as much as I like the weather, water, and people, surfing is tough there. Competing there is harder than competing at uppers and church. haha I would put it in the category of competing for waves at lowers, except you are competing with uncles (which I consider myself in that age category), pros, ams, groms, dailies, beginners. All of whom seem super confident. in the end, waco is way cheaper per wave. Having said that, if you have a girlfriend or are married, waco is an easy sell. My wife was so down to go to Magnolia farms in Waco. She knew waco better than me. in the end, she ended up going the month prior with her friends but not a bad trip for a couple if that is the hangup. :)
@@ThomyeSurfs there’s definitely a lineup in Hawaii you have to contend with. Where did you surf? I surfed mostly at rock piles in town and had plenty of waves. The uncles even gave me a bomb surprisingly. Maybe you can supplement your vlog with things to do when not surfing in Waco. Besides magnolia and the Leemers I imagine you just sit around bored the rest of the time. I can see it would definitely improve my surfing with the reps you get. One day maybe 🤔
@@surfininmy40s Hey, a Maybe is better than a No. LOL that entire group I was with did a strike mission. they flew in the night before, surfed all day and then flew out the morning after. I however, flew into Dallas, visited a friend used to work with. Drove to waco for the strike mission, drove out to Austin to visit another friend. Then drove all the way back to Dallas to head into our parent company office. It was basically a visit, surf, work trip. very productive overall. My legs were so sore after 6.5 hrs of surfing that they didn't really work well or without pain for 3 days after the surfing. haha old man recovery, sucks being 53.
@@surfininmy40s oh yeah, almost forgot. I surfed the bowl and rock piles mostly. I guess I have a hard time when I don't catch at least 15 waves per hour. Maybe I need to change that mindset. I think I averaged about 10 and they were mostly leftovers. I also got into it with a local. Younger kid (late 20's), we were at the bowl and I was going left and was to the inside. he decided to go right. He threw some words at me. I faked some pigeon and threw it back at him. I think he had a double take moment cuz he couldn't figure out if I was local or tourist. LOL He paddled away and we stayed out of each others way from that point. All good but still stressful.
@@ThomyeSurfs yeah the maybe definitely depends on my wife. 🤣. you don’t look 53 and surfing has definitely kept you youthful. Keep shredding and busting airs 🤙🏾.
I have surfed (tried) a few years, but have not had good waves in the ocean. while on vacations. They gave me a surftop to use for my Beginner session last week. To not go through the airports with a board, do they give you a shorter epoxy board to use in the intermediate and advanced sessions?
I know they have boards available for rent. Not sure they provide one for free. Having said that, the rental cost is way cheaper than bringing a board. So definitely better to rent for most surfers.
Cool
Do you think the FireWire Chumlee would work well in advanced Waco?
maybe on the intermediate wave but to be honest, i never jived with that board. I remember having a hard time setting the rail. maybe the super wide round tail. it just all depends on what you want to do on the wave. if you want to go vert and surf in the pocket, a narrower tail is better but if you are a flat surfer, where your maneuvers are more angled toward the shoulder, it could work.
2016 to 2018. I worked in waxahachie texas which I was at grand opening of the cable park, remember they didn’t have surfboards, I found a garage sale, they had a boogie board that said, garage sale. Remember using that boogie board, I had a great time. I meet other people from texas, which I didnt’ know they surfed and there was another surf park in the area, which this one was cheaper. You pay and get a band. I remember since, no one was there, I surfed couple hours…. What was the cost today?
I remember announcer saying Big Frank from Hawaii is here, I told him don’t do that, I am Mexicano, my Hawaii brothers would kill me, if they hear that. Love you Guys.. Downey California ❤❤❤. I remember my Christian brothers we went to church and read the Bible and the shoot guns came out, what’s going on. Lord, in your name. I learned how to use a shoot gun. Texas Jesus and Guns. Frank Martinez Downey California ❤❤❤
Bibles and Guns, LOL, love it.
I totally forgot about N-Land wave pool. This one lady used to go and film/post the waves daily, it was like a surf report for wind. I'd watch it all the time. At the time, the waves looked great, looking back and comparing to the newer pools, I don't feel as bad not having surfed that pool. :)
As for cost, it ranges from $90 to $130 per hour. They have some pro session now that runs 1.5 hrs and costs around $300. less people in the pool.
If your boards came damaged through the airlines are you able to claim the damages?
I'll look into it. thanks.
What did the airlines charge you to ship your boards and who did you fly with?
I flew spirit. it was $100 each way for the boards. they say only 2 but I took 3. I figured if it was less than the 40lbs limit, they wouldn't check. My bag was only 35lbs. The flights themselves would have only been about $240 took a carry on. I had to work while I was there.
Are you doing a review on the revo?
yes, got to my community section and check out the upcoming boards. I do have to get some other boards out first.
www.youtube.com/@ThomyeSurfs/community
6 mins 50 seconds in… gorgeous 360! Why aren’t the WSL guys doing these in heats for big points?! Just an incredible move
I always hear the Australian commentaters say cheeky 360. Lol. I'm guessing they think it's too easy.
@@ThomyeSurfs those 🦘 are tripping! A 360 is black belt 🥋 level skillZ
@@thebensman9786 LOL
It's REAL!!
It sure is. but it also feels like a dream. That night after my 6.5 hours of surfing, I could not sleep. it felt like I had just woken up from a dream and the entire night, the waves kept replaying in my head. :)
@@ThomyeSurfs old memories, even of surfing 8 days in a row
Do you need to be an advanced surfer to surf the advanced sessions? I’m borderline intermediate/advanced
oh no, i would say most that surf the advanced wave are actually intermediate, some bordering on beginner/intermediate. Having said that, I watched an advanced surfer surfing the intermediate wave and it looked more fun to me. it was a tad smaller and softer but had a much longer workable section. he would do 1 turn, race down the line and do a full cutty. you can't really do that on the advanced wave.
i would do some advanced any may 1 hr of intermediate just to compare. next time i go, i'm squeezing in intermediate hours. the more I think about it, I think the reason intermediates like the advanced wave is that the wave requires no self speed generation. just turn in the pocket. the intermediate wave probably feels a tad slow but if you are good at generating speed, then it is actually a really fun wave.
How concerned were you about hitting the bottom with your head?
The first time I went in 2019, I was a little concerned. but never made contact. This last time, I made contact once with my back/shoulder but only cuz i went over the falls. I would say you can wear a soft helmet or hard helmet if you are really concerned. My buddy wore his to be safe. He had another surf trip coming up and didn't want to risk any serious injury.
Do you like the Frk +?
Wich size ?
Thanks
so far so good. I am finishing up a review of the board but only in the pool. I will do an part 2 in the ocean once we get some waves. Overall, I will say I like it and my part 1 video will explain why. :)
Mine is the 5'8". I'm 5'8 and 145 lbs.
@@ThomyeSurfswait !!!thanks Bro
How do you think the mashup would do?
I'm not sure to be honest. The mashup is such a flat board. I think it would be very drivey and fast but don't know how well it would do to stay in the pocket doing vertical turns. I do believe that it would do really well on the air wave though. The air wave to me felt like a real beach break. something you could drive down the line. Landings might be a little rough.
We did have a guy who had his mashup. He did ok but ended up switching to a neckbeard 2. Another guy started on a puddle jumper pro but ended up switching to his seaside. I think it is very contingent on your style too.
@Thomye Surfs thanks for the feedback. It seems like fins could make a big difference as well, probably a pivot fin to stay in the pocket vs a raked fin.
Going there in a few weeks, going to bring a few different options.
@@alexwender4479 I thought that too about the pivot fins. On the Revo, I had very large pivot fins, quad. But as much as it was good to be able to turn and do a nice 360, it wouldn't drive off the bottom to make that pivot helpful off the top. There isn't much time to switch things out during a session so hopefully you have a few breaks.
But definitely have lots of options. :)
No price info bro? I’m sure you gotta be a 6 figure fella to afford privates, but I’m curious about prices for public sessions
I think it changes. Which is why I didn't mention it but it's actually hidden on their website. I'll try to find a link. There were six of us and we surfed a total of 5 hours and if we paid equally it was $1,500 each. Public sessions depending on which wave, is around $129 per hour with 12 people. So the math is almost even. But more expensive for private since we had six less people so we just paid double the price per hour roughly. Hope that makes sense.
how deep is the pool?
i know by the wall, it is deep, like 9ft. but quickly, it gets shallow. if you fall, you just have to avoid being a torpedo and fall flat. right were the wave is breaking behind the the pocket, it is like 2.5 to 3ft deep. relatively shallow.
Do they have decent boards to rent?
I think. I didn't take a close look at their line up but they seemed to have a lot of boards. A few in our group seem to find the board they wanted.
I just saw on their website's FAQ section that you can email them and they can send you an active list.
How about the price?
between $100 to $130 per hour based on the setting and season. that is for a public session. They publish the prices on their website although they are currently closed for the season. wacosurf.com
Private sessions range from $1800 to $2200 per hour based on the season, roughly. Don't quote me on that cuz the prices do change from time to time.
When we went, we went on shoulder season and got 5 hrs. It cost us about $1500 each for 6 guys. Plenty of waves and well worth it in my opinion. I also had reason to be out in Texas cuz of work and friends. So it was killing 3 birds with 1 stone.
Cost?
These are the hourly rates on their website, they could change. In fact, they may be different for different days and weekends.
Beginner wave: $84.15
Intermediate wave: $119.00
Advanced wave: $129.00
The pro wave looks like it is for 1.5 hrs and the max occupancy is lower.
Pro wave: $319.00
Best to check their website. wacosurf.com
How is the localism?
🤣 It's the longhorns you have to watch out for. Nasty fellas.
How would the Tractor from the other video do in the pool?
