- A spine-chilling tale, played out in pitch darkness on jagged precipices at 14,000 feet above the Galwan River valley between the foot-soldiers of two nuclear-armed regional superpowers, India and China. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
When an Indian commanding officer plunged to his death, reportedly pushed off a cliff, it triggered mayhem. And what happened next could, frankly, have triggered World War III, mid-pandemic. Chinese troops apparently wielding clubs wrapped in barbed wire and bludgeoning Indian soldiers to death using metal rods studded with nails.
By the time it was over, 20 Indians were dead, scores wounded and 10 taken captive - although they were released four days later. China conceded it too had suffered casualties; the number, however, unknown. It was the deadliest clash in decades.
Indian forces immediately headed eastwards and upwards through Kashmir towards Ladakh to defend the undefined frontier.
That the skirmish was fought without firearms heightened the savagery of the hand-to-hand combat. An agreement intended to prevent matters getting out of control bans guns in a strip two kilometres either side of what’s known as the Line of Actual Control.
The problem is, there’s actually no demarcated line along much of the 3,500 kilometre border between China and India. And while the two trade accusations and blame the other for violations of sovereignty, at least some of the blame rests with this man.
Lt Col Sir Arthur Henry McMahon, a British-Indian Army officer turned Foreign Secretary of India during the British Raj, who in 1914 lent his name to a line on a map, dividing India from Tibet. It’s now 70 years since China invaded and annexed Tibet and in Beijing, McMahon’s name is mud. In short, they don’t recognise lines colonial cartographers drew on maps.
In 1962, India and China went to war up here for a month. Same spot. India suffered a humiliating defeat. Territorial disputes have festered and tensions have simmered ever since.
Which is why face-offs are common high on the Himalayan plateau. This little spat dates from a few years back. There’s not much love lost between the People’s Liberation Army and the Indian Armed Forces in such encounters.
China blamed India for provoking the deadly Galwan River clash while India accused China of a “premeditated and planned action.”
Chinese state television meanwhile engaged in bellicose cheer leading, airing pictures of high-altitude People’s Liberation Army exercises in Tibet.
And as if that was too subtle a message, the nationalist Global Times tabloid marked the anniversary of China detonating its first hydrogen bomb.
Here’s a whistle stop tour of what’s been going on while the rest of the world’s been in pandemic lockdown. China’s been busy making enemies of Canada and Australia.
Two Canadians have been charged with espionage in apparent retaliation for the arrest of Huawei’s Chief Financial Officer in Vancouver, who’s now likely to be extradited to the US on fraud charges.
Australia’s Prime Minister has blamed a “sophisticated state-based cyber actor” for multiple malicious cyber attacks on all levels of government there. He declined to name the alleged perpetrator, but China’s prime suspect. Beijing described these claims as nonsense.
In one of the world’s most strategic waterways, the South China Sea, all of which is claimed by Beijing, China has been aggressively posturing, engaging in intimidation tactics with vessels from the Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam. A Chinese patrol boat even sank a Vietnamese trawler.
In Hong Kong, a new National Security Law threatens the one-country-two-systems agreement with Britain. Meanwhile, Chinese Sukhoi fighters have repeatedly violated Taiwanese airspace, raising the temperature there.
China is now the world’s largest military spender, after the US, and it’s investing heavily in modern military capabilities. Its apparent incursions into Indian territory along the Line of Actual Control are designed to remind India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, of the pain it could inflict. It comes as India prepares to allow Australia to join a military alliance with the US and Japan, which Beijing views as a China-containment group.
For Beijing, the COVID-19 pandemic has provided a useful distraction, as it flexes its new-found Wolf Warrior muscles. NATO’s Secretary General recently branded it “bullying and coercion.” The precipitous valleys between Ladakh and Tibet might seem remote, but as the source-region of nearly half India’s water supply it’s of huge strategic importance. And in light of what else has been happening while no one was looking, the high-altitude fist-fight up there might prove to have been a true watershed moment.

I'm Filipino and I could tell that a Chinese invasion would be inevitable, the Chinese have won in many major wars, they fought off the Japanese, the US-led United Nations forces in the Korean peninsula (Which they technically won), Vietnam War, Taiwan, and of course the Sino-India war in 1962, I could tell that my country will be annihilated by the superior Chinese and resistance would be futile, so sorry to break it up to you but we're weak and we're going to be a part of China in a matter of weeks.

The Chinese were building roads and setting camps close to the border, so in response, India too built roads and camps near the border. Then the commanders on both sides had a meeting on spot where they agreed to vacate the area by the same evening. When the Indian troops were almost done clearing the area, the commander Col. Santosh Babu had his inner mind telling that China could not be trusted. So he sent 11 men to recon whether the Chinese had actually cleared the camps. The Indian troops were unarmed because they did not want the Chinese to think this move as an aggression from Indian side which would only escalate matters. As expected the Chinese had not cleared the camps. Moreover, the Chinese captured the 11 men who came to check. Therefore Col. Babu himself went to release the soldiers by talk. But since China was too scared to talk, they took the colonel captive and killed him. On hearing this, the Indian troops who were waiting at the camps took iron rods with thorns and stormed into the Chinese camps and set fire to the Chinese tents and killed an estimated 35-40 PLA soldiers although 20 Indian soldiers too were KIA. Even today China is too scared to give the real number of deaths
Four Chinese died and one was seriously injured. You can watch the video. Hundreds of Indian soldiers fought around a dozen Chinese soldiers, leading to this tragedy. Chinese reinforcements later came and killed more than 20 Indians, 17 of whom died because of lack of timely medical treatment

It was a pity that India's national hero M. Gandhi was assassinated during the separation of India and Pakistan. It was Nehru who inherited British India's expansionism policy. The British didn't conquer the whole land within a short period as there was no India at the time but more than 40 fiefdoms and the British colonialist took over those fiefdoms one by one and made it British India. Then the British Governors started thinking a way to take over Tibet but was stopped by the Ching dynasty in China. Anyway Governor MacMahon managed to grab a piece of the South Tibet which was never accepted by the Chinese kingdom nor the next Republic of China. Nehru learnt that trick by heart. He would take neighbour's land mile by mile. In 1962, it took Chairman Mao 10 days to ponder why his good friend Nehru would do such harassment to China. In 1955 China and India sponsored the Bandung conference in Indonesia and signed the Bandung declaration for mutual peace and non interference principles (the 5 Bandung principles). Finally Chairman Mao decided to clobber back. With superb strategic planning although extreme transportation difficulty in those terrain, PLA managed to beat the Indian agresors and bought border peace for the next 20 yrs. But Nehru's propaganda of the ultra Hindu superiority made it difficult for the Indians to accept such defeat. So what happened is that Indians would remember forever that devastating 1962 defeat but didn't want to know who started it. Just like the Galwan conflict in Ladakh, a mediocre Colonel B. Santosh Babu who came to site just 2 days and who was eager to show off and please his high command in New Delhi, did the most stupid adventurous and uncalculated incursion to the Chinese side and his team was clobbered causing 17 Indian soldiers jumping into the freezing river that ended in 20 unnecessary deaths. Again, all Indians remembered that 20 deaths but didn't want to blame Col Babu's action. Indian media made up Chinese losses of 40+ soldiers to save face. The fact is, Chinese lost 4 soldiers which was shown the release of the video right after the disengagement agreement. So India must abandon the Congress Nehru clan that kept screaming that India lost some inches of territory due to the disengagement and more soldiers should be positioned in the highland at all cost. Are there any more Indians that can think like the Great Hero Gandhi?

China is currently addressing all the injustices and bullying suffered in the past century esp. when they are weak. Now that they are strong and they merely want to correct these injustices left behind by the Western Colonial Masters. For example: The British occupied the Chinese area bordering India and left, leaving occupied area unresolved. China want it back but India feel they are legitimate owners given by their Colonial Masters Brits. Source of border conflict between India and China.
2. After WW2, under Portdam treaty, Japan is to return all the occupied territories to the respective countries. As for Diayu(Senkaku Islands) America is the main culprit here. For decades it suppose to return to China but did not, and instead hand it to Japan. This is the source of future conflict between Sino-Japan.
The same can be seen in Arabs world. All these countries border conflicts are the legacy left behind by these Western past colonial era. Many of the borders are demarcated by the Brits’ marker pen, ignoring the landlocked situation, access, and ethnicity and religious situations. This can clearly be seen in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh etc.
