In this photography tutorial video, you will learn why using auto iso in manual mode on your DSLR is such a great idea.
I also show you how to set Auto ISO in Nikon D5200. If you have another brand or model of camera, don't despair, you will still learn a lot about Auto ISO for bird photography, wildlife photography, and sports photography.
Manual mode with Auto ISO is almost like using an auto mode - you set your Aperture and Shutter Speed and let the camera decide what the ISO should be from moment to moment. This is fantastic for bird photography where you have subjects that move across different brightness levels in the scene.
I have experimented with the Nikon D5200 Auto ISO in manual mode and find it to be really great for assuring I get good exposure in my bird photos. You can try it for yourself and see if you like it. Please leave a comment below the video to let me know what you think of it.

Wonderful, thank you for the informative and to-the-point video! :) Also, lovely scenery.
That was top notch advice for me. Thanks for sharing your experience. I’m going to enjoy shooting in this mode. ❤❤❤
Omg I’ve had this camera for years and never knew about this setting !!!
Recently got a D5200 and learned about auto iso with manual but didn’t think the 5200 had that feature. Blown away to learn I can use this. So excited to try this out. Many thanks Barry!!
You are very welcome. Let me know if you notice the autofocus lagging when you use it. That was my experience. 🙂
I’m going to try this out. Thanks ❤❤❤
I'd been using 'auto ISO' unknowingly and it does give great shots of moving targets that don't stay in the one light source. It's a great way to take away a bit of the difficulty/impossibility of changing ISO to suit an ever-quickly-changing background. Thanks for the tip, Barry. As always giving us amateurs a helping hand. Thank you.
I love it ❤❤❤❤
Excellent tips, and very well demonstrated! Thank you for this great video.
Thank you for watching and commenting. 👍🙂
I'm going to try this, Thank you!
Awesome Paola. Come back and let me know what you think of it. 🙂
Hi Barry, I have a d5600 and use auto iso, I was phographing some Hen Harriers against a bright sky with exp comp set at +2 which was fine, the iso went to 800, but when they went down to the grass and tree line the iso went up to 3200, Dont you think this is too high when the light isnt that bad.👍
The camera will choose a higher ISO like that because the grass and treeline are much darker than the sky. If you were using a fast shitter speed, as I'm sure you were with Harriers, then 3200 sounds about right to me, especially if you had your exp. comp. set for +2.
@@photographersfreedom The shutter speed was 1/1600 s, Do you think 1/1000s would have been ok to get more light and lower iso. Thanks
@@blueyorks6884 no. I would use a faster shutter speed for birds like that if they are in flight, up around 1/2500th or faster. Of course, it depends on how much you want to freeze the motion.
Don't be too concerned about using higher ISOs, especially in good light. You can always remove the noise with Topaz Denoise AI. It does a brilliant job of removing noise and preserving details. ua-cam.com/video/4rjcBiB2-G8/v-deo.html
I used ISO values up to 6400 with my Sony a6400 yesterday. It has the same sized sensor as your D5600. I was shooting under a forest canopy in fairly low light, and I will get amazing results after running the images through Topaz Denoise AI. I used to be paranoid about using high ISO values, but I'm not anymore. 🙂
This is awesome what do you put the setting to thanks
I show you how to set it up at 04:17.
@@photographersfreedom thanks that tells me how to turn it on but there is nothing as of what iso sensitivity should be at,max sensitivity should be at or what the minimum shutter speed should be thanks
@seanallan3042 you are correct. Take a look at this video ua-cam.com/video/lKQt6t8gbOk/v-deo.htmlsi=1zP0zKyqsh7ZLpUX. At 3:45, I take you through the settings and talk about them in more detail.
Hi I've just picked up a d5300 and going to try this am,fighting camera shake at the moment so using a fast shutter speed to combat this, and experiment with this set up.
Great. Let me know if you have any questions. 🙂
Thank you
@@photographersfreedom Well just to let you now it worked pin sharp pics the best so far thnk so much
@@richardadams.Carp.Hunter Awesome. 😀
Wow 👌 I will try this today! Thx u
Can you show tutorial with D5300 please..... Also show how to shoot better photos with d5300
The 5300 is pretty much the same as the 5200. All of my videos will help you to use your 5300. 🙂
I have s Nikon d5600 and I'm trying out using auto ISO with manual mode and so far so good... But i just tried a selfie using the live view, and i couldn't get any thing to show up in my monitor. I changed my mode to aperture priority and then shutter priority and both of those gave me a preview on the monitor.
Can we not use auto ISO with manual with a live view?
I have never tried it. Maybe you can't use it with Live View. I will try it out myself and see...🙂
@@photographersfreedom Yeah, it's just strange. I've googled trying to find a definitive answer and can't find anything. I was hoping there was just a setting that needed changed to be able to use this in live view.
Do you ever have the problem of it bumping up you ISO too high and causing too much noise in your photo?
It will do that if there is insufficient light in the scene. You can set a high ISO limit in the ISO Sensitivity Settings in the Shooting menu under Maximum sensitivity.
