- Food waste is a massive global problem: the EU alone throws away 88 million tonnes a year. Much of this ends up in landfill and produces dangerous greenhouse gasses which contribute to climate change. In Europe 53% of food waste comes from households, and one woman has made it her mission to stop Danes throwing away food. We travel to Copenhagen to meet Selina Juul, a key part of Denmark’s food waste revolution.

It takes many months to grow a simple vegetable like a tomato, an aubergine, or whatever you could think of. In light of this hard work the money we pay for the food item we eat actually means nothing. I would suggest all those people who waste food, to start an exercise in growing a simple vegetable in their own homes and find out the amount of hard work and patience it takes to grow the vegetable that you eat on an everyday basis. This will automatically cultivate real respect for food and in no time you would think many times before wasting any vegetable.
if it takes one passionate individual to save the food waste fiasco in denmark, it should invoke passionate groups of people in america to find solutions on our horrendous food waste business, stop being in denial, start in your own home, spread the mentality and message like fire. while should our land fills become full with food, when the stomachs of our own children are empty?
Stop wasting food - very important message! I wish more countries would follow suit. Waste of food is violence against the earth. My grandmother was from the Great Depression Era, and taught that food waste was not an option, as many times the family went hungry. Great and inspirational video.
Please get the USA on board next. The amount of food wasted there is astronomical.
Can comfirm. As someone who works produce in grocery store, I'm forced to throw out food that has even minor imperfections. I hate it and I wish I could do something about it
The worst thing about waste is the plastic waste. Everything is wrapped in plastic even fruits and vegetables
Beautiful and ambitious, but honestly the food waste all over the world well not really all over the world but here in United States where I live it is pretty excessive
Amazing video, great girl - and a very important message. Thank you.
Give her a medal.
I can fully understand her. I inwardly cringe when I read about the enormous amount of waste every year. In our household we have a simple formula.
Buy very small amounts, more often (3-4 times a week).
Important work. And also, some food for thought: Supermarkets need to start selling things in single servings. When there's only one or two of you, it can be difficult to get through things in time. It's like everything is set up in family portions... If I could go and buy things in the actual quantities I needed them, it would help me to manage the food waste in my house.
I used to work in the debenhams restaurant a year ago and I cannot even believe how much food they would waste at the end of the day. In the handbook it was stated that the food must be thrown away and the staff are not allowed to eat it either. It was so surprising to me.
So much of the food had been freshly cooked and barely even touched and it just made me wonder why they didn't save it for the next day, or even give it to homeless people. Sometimes as the staff were walking to the bin or clearing the food at dive, they would sneak a few pieces into their mouth so that they wouldn't get caught by the manager. It's just sad.
This is awful to see that much food is being wasted.
Nice video. Glad atleast someone is taking initiatives. She definitely brings a positive message. Good luck!! :)
Awesome work. God bless her.
@Ralph Bernhard:
Thank you for you good advice on buying very small amounts - and more often. It really works!
what a great story!!!
the same thing is happening in sweden2
I don't believe that we could possibly waste one third 33% of world's food but I love this Russian girl & she's doing good things tackling food that is wasted
Every walk has to start with the first step...
Great job - fingers crossed ! ! !
far the best news i saw in a long time
Those Danes are just smartest. The world should be run on the Nordic model for real.
And the Finland 's education system
Life is boring there
God bless your kind ❤️ Keep up the good work!
In Islam 10% of all produced food is taken as a charity tax and given out to the poor. If this was implemented around the world there would be no food hunger
She is a hero.
This video is more like advertisement than story. There is missing lots of what she did to change somebody´s behavour. BBC should do news better.
Indeed. This video dosen't explain much about how it's done. The video does, however, sum up a tiny bit at 2:29. I guess it's hard to sum up 9 years of work into 3 minutes... CNN also did a TV feature about her work, and it's a bit more detailed than BBC.
I do not understand, why is it important for hungry poor people, that well to do people stop putting left over food in the bin. -If the hungry people are still not being fed....
Never underestimate the Russians
Come to the US please
In my country, if the food which was expired, staff is going to change their label instead of new expiration date....wow Abracadebra...we have had new food already!!!! =.=
I would totally want that hair colour o-0
Im from Denmark. Still alot of food wasted. Never Heard of her
She's been on national TV just two days ago.... She's been in Danish and international media hundreds of times within the last 10 years. Just google her. And Denmark's food waste has been decreased further by 8 % within the last 6 years. I see that you don't read newspapers or watch TV....
Juul lol
Oh okay thanks
This is very yummy
Crazy girl achieves crazy goals))
Bible, Matthew 14:13-21 - Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”
Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
“We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.
“Bring them here to me,” he said. And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.

The message to stop food waste is universal. It is even in the Bible. Jesus preaches it. This blond Christian girl preaches it. All sane individuals all over the world preach it, no matter the religion or color.
Shame on you, Chuck Yews, Zombie Holocaust, cary bary, Charlie Hawtree, Chris Wheeler, Emmanuel Goldstein and others like you for your horrible comments here - and shame on you for casting a disgrace on such an important cause.
