Over the last few months, it seems like a new crime wave has emerged in New Zealand: ram raids, where people drive cars into shops to bust them open and steal the goods inside.
Last year there were around five a week across the country - and the crazy thing is, it’s mostly teenagers.
Police say nearly 90% of ram raid offenders are under the age of 20, and the majority are under 17.

My husband is African-American and his father owned a liquor store in Inglewood, California.
One night, whilst he was closing up the store, three teens armed with baseball bats and machetes went into his store, smashing up stuff and grabbing whatever bottles they could.
My husband's dad then pulled out a revolver and shot one of those teens through the neck, causing the other two to just drop the stuff they were trying to steal and run away.
A lot of the businesses in that street were robbed but for many years after that incident, his liquor store wasn't. It was firebombed in retaliation because the teen he shot was the younger brother of one of those other teens who were smashing up his store, but he wasn't robbed again since.

I need to explain a few things about these ram raids and the young people doing it, I,m a Maori and I know that the majority of these young people are Maori and Pacific Islanders we don't preach what we say as communities especially the leaders of these communities and iwi, point in fact we have gangs that come onto Maraes thats right with their patches and colors on that's great isn't it. Most of these young people who are brought up in gang families, drug addicted and alcohol fuel whanau groups, just imagine a 3 to 5 year old in that situation that is imprinted on them for life future gangsters and hoods. The gangs are pulling the strings behind the scenes that is fact! how to fix it get these young people back to school employ truancy officers, if they refuse they go into a controlled facility to get help. Time to outlaw gang club houses, restrict their movements only in groups of 4, if they have a criminal record no association with gangs ever and Kainga Ora you are one of the main facilitators in housing gang members and their whanau no more.

Another solution would be to go back to having cigarettes which seem to be the main item targeted in steel vending machines, and you purchase a token from the counter, for your cigarettes, if nothing more this would slow down and help to eliminate the opportunistic criminal. It’s easy to empty a cupboard, but imagine having to put a token in each time and then only being able to remove one pack at a time. It would just take too long to steel the cigarettes.

Note anti ram bollards are around under $500 and average shop would need 3 possibly 4. Less than the cages some owners have installed and less than steel shutters that just collapse when rammed. Note the anti ram ones are the ones where there is an underground part, so not just bolted to concrete.

When people are not invested in their community they have no care about what happens, no amount of services trying to educate people will change anything, in order to stop these types of issues everyone must see the benefits of society, unfortunately when your at the bottom and all you can see is a life of hard work for no real gain taking the short cut of using other peoples hard work to benefit yourself is an attractive opportunity, today the use of the word pride is seldom connected to the whole, society is busy being divided into separate groups all vying for top victimhood spot, to paraphrase a great film ‘all people once were warriors’ and we had the community spirit to protect everyone from our enemies, today we do not recognise the enemy of our community so it gathers ever increasing control and keeps people from living the lives we should, it’s not about giving people benefits it’s about giving people pride in themselves and their community, so they are invested in what happens, if you see yourself as being separate to others why care about them, if your all one community then you have care, people need work and income that sustains at least the basic needs of life without fear.
