Maybe the solution at number 6 will not be fixed by a "deep lying 8", but with an excellent possession-oriented defender (which is what Rodri is)...maybe someone with a similar profile to Kimmich (6+RB) or a Scalvini (6+CB) Also it wouldn't overcrowd the advanced midfielder department (which can wait until next year for a rebuild) and leave some money for an alternative to Harland (a 9½ type of player?)
You say that as if Brighton dont almost always effortlessly replace the players they sell with even better players almost immediately after selling them
Brighton is also at a level where they can take risks on unknown but promising players that scouts at bigger clubs recognize but doesn’t fit the club yet. Hint, hint, mid table clubs. Taking risks on young players, develop and selling them is a viable niche to occupy.

Ola Aina at forest for right back would make sense. Only 6 months left on his contract and has been brilliant in the prem for us. He obliterated walker in a foot race last season whilst playing at left back for us. He is very versatile. I'm a forest fan and don't want to see this happen. I thought that a perfect option for City would’ve been Leon Goretzka considering his shaky standing with Bayern as of late, and his good history with Pep and his defensive, physical and support qualities that fit the check mark.
Might be difficult in January, but going back to Laporte's transfer- it was because of Kompany's constant injury. Based on that theory- they would need someone to play in Rodri's position and I would go and get Fofana from AC Milan. While most of the praise this season in Milan's midfield has gone to Reijnders (and rightly so). He is the same age as Zubimendi (who will be the most prominent due to being Spanish and playing backup for Rodri in the national team). Fofana has just arrived in the summer so an important fee will be required for Milan to sell him, but as they just got a new manager they are in a momentary reset phase and could cash in to then go and get Ricci from Torino. When Rodri comes back Fofana will also be able to play as an 8 and for a fee between 40-60M I do not think there is a better option for City in the market right now.
