I enjoy Dos Equis when it’s about 85 degrees out. I like Pacifico when it’s in the 90s. I love Corona with lime in 100+ weather. Modelo is my preferred winter Mexican beer. Tecate is year round.
Damn…that was well thought out and well stated. No nonsense, I dig the comment…and could honestly say that I’ve tried all 5 beers, and never put thought into the temperature outside…and now I want to consider this moving forward
I love Dos Equis and now I know I’m not alone . I knew there was a reason why it was my favorite. Just a nice solid beer . I only drink it in special occasions. 👍
Glad Nate mentioned the fact that there are inherent storage issues with these imported lagers. I did plenty of “field research” when I lived in Tucson, where MX lagers are cheap, fresh & abundant. For my tastes, Pacifico is my favorite when fresh (driest, most hop flavor), followed by Carta Blanca, Tecate, Dos XX, Mexicali, Modelo and Corona. Honorable mentions: Bohemia, Victoria…doesn’t qualify because Boh is more like a German pils and Victoria kind of a Vienna thing.
After a couple of years of home brewing we (my son and I) have decided that Mexican beer-style is our favorite. And after a few brewing sessions (around 10-15). We decided on these hops. We tried different recipes, all the way from urquell type to Pacifico clones ect. The hops we use are warrior, crystal, saaz. Nottingham yeast seems to like my recipe and skillset. I would love to see your recipe and try. BTW, my favorite Mexican beer is always the "gratis" one. LOL
Tecate is a very solid beer for the price point, it's usually always a few dollars less per case than the others. I probably buy/order Dos Equis the most often though.
Mexcan lager is hands down my favorite beer style. Pacifico and Modelo are easily my favorite, but go with modelo from a can though. Stone makes a great salt/lime cerveza that I love.
I work in a bar and whenever we put Dos Equis on special we sell the hell out of it. So much that people always say how good it is after ordering it because it's cheap. So now when it's not on special it's still a top seller.

I used to love Negra Modelo, but either my taste or it changed, as it tastes like there is a lot of added caramel to me now. Pacifico is great, but the less widely distributed Bohemia is my favorite.
For me- 1. Pacifico- cleanest-tasting consistently 2. XX- I have had some extremely metallic batches though 3- Modelo- not bad but have had many a batch with an off-taste or rust taste; better in cans 4- Corona- so damn skunky, but with lime I won’t say no 5- Tecate- the most cheap-tasting
Lived in San Diego and went into Baja many times. My fav is Pacifico and then Dos Equis, particularly with food. My everyday beer in the cooler or out fishing is just cans of Tecate on ice, not a big fan of Corona or Modelo although I love mexican beer over domestic stuff overall. Fun experiment!
Pacifico is my favorite to drink at a Mexican restaurant, it's light and crisp and works well with a bit of lime. I don't if it's just my palate, but XX Lager has an odd metallic flavor to me, it might be just the minerals you were hinting at. It was also from a bottle so it wouldn't be from can packaging.
I only drink "beach beer" while in Mexico so I don't notice the storage issues you mentioned. I generally find them pretty weak, but that's why you can spend the day drinking them. When we go to dinner, I'll order a Modelo Negra, Bohemia Oscura or XX Amber. They have a lot more flavor and go better with dinner.
That was the first beer I ever had when I was 13 and was staying the night at a friends house and we snuck into the garage at 1am and grabbed a couple beers out of his dads fridge and XX was what he had lol. I remember both of us drinking three each (his dad had so many beers in the fridge he'd never notice) and I remember us getting drunk and puking the next morning. Probably because after we had the beers we snuck a few shots of Jagermeister each. We got so drunk that we ended up crawling on the floor and rolling around while laughing lol! Then we played Vice City on the PS2 and took turns going on rampages until we died before passing out, good times!
I'd be interested to see how the review would change if you added a squeeze of lime. I get why you would want to judge them on their own merits but there is just something about adding a lime to MLs that unlocks so much to them. A local craft brewery in my area has an amazing dark ML that they make and while it is fantastic on it's own, adding that squeeze of lime just seems to unlock a whole other level to the beer.
Dos Equis Amber is everything I want in a beer but Modelo works in a pinch only because Estrella Jalisco (should have tested in place of Tecate which is garbage) isn't available here.
You should check out "Wallace Brewing" in Idaho, their "American Lager" ... it is excellent, and about what you just described, but perhaps a little more malty. Kind of hard to find though.

Great stuff. Thanks. You say: "Based on the way that it clings on the side of the glass I can tell you that it's probably a touch drier than the one that I just tried". Could you elaborate on that?
I have certainly had all of these beers but usually have thought of them as cheap go-to party/get together beers. In my experience, the Mexican lagers at craft breweries usually blow these out of the water, I think for two reasons. One that you mentioned was a bit more hop character, especially highlighting a floral note from noble hops like you pointed out in the Dos Equis. But secondly, it also seems they always include a more notable amount of maize in the grist. It gives a really nice sweetness and almost a creaminess to the mouthfeel (or at least perceived creaminess) while still drinking so light and crisp. Just wanted to toss my 2 cents in about my experience with Mexican lagers in craft breweries. As far as my experience goes, this include many breweries in the states and some in Ensenada down in Baja.
I have found that Modelo tastes different (and better) out of a can rather than a bottle. Anyone else experience this? Or is this somewhat common among all beers?
Bohemia was always my favorite mass produced Mexican/Vienna lager, Pacifico number two. Nothing wrong with a nice cold Carta Blanca, last I looked it was #1 in Mexico
Gotta try a dos equis again it’s been awhile. Modelo gets no love from me. Tastes off a lot of the time. Can’t hate corona but I sometimes dig a Sol too. A similar but better/cheaper Mexican lager
Ask your guys which packaging they picked up. I've been a shelf man for a major distributor. 6 packs and things open to the bright lights of the cooler and the variety of light sources in backrooms results in 6 packs usually having the worst quality taste for clear glassed beer bottles. A 12 pack or larger is usually in a solid box. Will producers ever change from their iconic bottles for flavor? Almost never. Modello has a shorter neck and more coverage of it, so I thought the skunking would affect it less. It is my go to mexican lager when there is no better alternative. The dark lager-esqu varieties of Dos Equis and Modelo are my preferred choice for these brands though. Tecate and Corona make me cry, especially when people are drinking them at parties like they actually taste good
So difficult to know if you're getting a good representation of the beer.. That Modelo could have sat in a 110 degree warehouse for a few weeks before getting in your hands. Trying different samples could give you completely different results. Great video!
Dos equis is usually the cheapest and most widely available at mexican restaurants, love it. Ambar is fine too. Pacifico is clean and cool cans, corona is too sweet but love the skunky smell, and tecate is simply the best and cheapest. Last time i was in Mexico we would buy a box or two every day and just spend all day drinking it in the pool. Hard to tell if it was beer or pool water we were drinking but it was the cheapest by a few dollars. I made a good mexican lager with kveik yeast, 1 oz liberty and 1 oz motueka hops. Very clean and no lime needed. But in general I'd prefer to drink micheladas
Pacifico is always my go to for a Mexican lager.

cool. i always forget about DosXX
Dos Equis cans are great but I can't find them often where I am, but on Mexico I crushed so many
Ask your guys which packaging they picked up.
Great video!
indeed, a very important caveat. still a fun exercise!
Dos Equis Amber is my favorite.
Interesting that Modelo is biggest selling beer in America. I prefer Pacifico and Dos Equis. My house beer is Natty Light.
Shout out to the fresh hops at 4:03
👍🏻👍🏻
I think a second round should be done but looking for Mexican lagers in a can instead.
For sure - popular suggestion! Would definitely level the playing field
Dos Equis is so underrated! if people just tried it once they would fall in love with it. Tecate is a close second in my opinion.
🙌🏻
I love that light struck aroma and taste of Corona....am i weird lol?
It’s common to like it
Its the urine.
Thoughts on Sam Adams?
Need to do it again with lime wedges
I’ve been to Treehouse. Insane beers there.
