@@jazzwell You're right, in a sense, but the the fact is that hit songs usually have a certain tune to them. There are some complete "accidents" where non-typical songs just hit some certain spot in the populace, but more often than not, they are made with either complete awareness and intention of making a hit song, or at least crafted with the same style and sound that can't go completely unnoticed. Hit songs tend to be very pop-ish, and if a band suddenly starts leaning away from their original sound and into generic pop, with simplistic chord progressions, they know what they're doing. That doesn't still mean they're automatically ready for explosive popularity, of course.

That's a rather simplistic look at the Beatles, isn't it? John could have a lot of fun and silliness with his songs, and Paul could capture real poignancy. And in the collaborative process, we often got songs that differed greatly from their first drafts. John could complain about Paul as much as he liked, but he loved him, and his music. They kept each other's creative edges sharp. Hell, we wouldn't have Double Fantasy if it weren't for McCartney II.

"And in the collaborative process, we often got songs that differed greatly from their first drafts." - exactly the same thing as saying 'the songs were written solo and then brought to the band to be fleshed out' XDDDD ooh the pretension of a beatles fan.............
"John could complain about Paul as much as he liked, but he loved him, and his music" ....? Please explain to me in tiresome detail why you think that is any less 'simplistic' a look than 'they had different ideals on how to approach the writing process'...? As much as any of this kind of pissed me off for how much of a diversion this title was compared to its content, listen to GG Allin's Don't Talk to Me
He wanted to be something entirely different, if you read up on him, any compasionate human being could see that his life is quite a tragedy.
All of the groups mentioned in this video don't actually hate you for listening to their music, most of them just hate having a single song being loved over all the songs they funneled their hard work and hardships into. Imagine working on 14 pieces and only a single one is being praised and appraised as being invaluable, while you think it's the least worth of attention as anything else you've ever made, for how easy and stolen the chord progression is. Meanwhle, you're dealing with personal struggles. The entire situation is messy, but to say that they hate you for loving that single hit single? That's a bit extreme. I doubt anyone ever reads this anyway. I'm kind of screaming into the void here. All I meant is that you can imagine that if you ever made 14 beautiful pieces, and a single one you thought as being cheap becomes praised as the only thing that matters, while your other ones are neglected, you'd kind of feel misunderstood. That shit hurts. It might not prompt or warrant throwing shit at an audience, but now that you mention it...

Speaking as a musician, whatever issues they have about how fans might perceive their music, they gotta let that shit go. Or at least keep it from the fans. Because they will never get to know exactly how their fans do feel about their music and will only overgeneralize them and end up breaking the hearts of those "true" fans when they ultimately decide to walk all over them. Worst case scenario, those fans don't get it at all but still are giving those musicians the support they need for them to be able to live their out their dream life of performing or being in the studio. There are certainly worse things that life can dish out compared to being misunderstood. And to shit on your fans is a lose-lose for everyone involved. All it does for the musician is push them further down the road towards being the condescending bitter alienating prick that a lot of musicians end up being.

Rivers Cuomo has actually kind of changed his tune on Pinkerton in recent years. After the conclusion of the Memories Tour, where the band played the entirety of both the Blue Album and Pinkerton live, he said in an interview that it was "incredibly validating" for him to see thousands of fans singing along every word to each song from Pinkerton, whereas back when the album was first released those songs would "sink like a lead balloon" live (see www.mtv.com/news/1654191/weezers-rivers-cuomo-reflects-on-memories-tour-plans-more-shows-in-2011/ for the whole story). Also, I've been to personally see them twice in the past year, and both times they played at least one or two songs from Pinkerton, including the one that Cuomo personally considers among the hardest to play, "Falling for You", both times. So I don't think Weezer hates their fans for liking Pinkerton, I think they hate them more for not really embracing the more experimental pop direction they keep trying to take.

I photographed Thom Yorke solo last year. It was by far the most bizairre, beautiful, lush, intense, and violently jarring sounding gig I have ever been to. He posed for me several shots, and it was really cool, except, he is really Odd, even when I met him years earlier, he was shocked that I didnt know who he was when we were at dinner. I told him my honest opinions of some songs, and he thought it was nice that I told him, not knowing who he was. He introduced himself to me, and appreciated my honesty and opinions. And told me I was totally wrong on a statement of "Overproduction" on an album. That show I shot was historic for me, and absolutely stunning, visuals and sounds, but I would never wish to re live that one. Any other production of his would be great.

If certain bands or singers write a song that they hate or wrote as a joke it is really simple, don't release it. Joe Elliot once said in an interview that whatever song that you officially release as a single to be ready to perform it at every show for the rest of your career. There are many bands that most likely have songs on their setlist at every show that they perform every time because they know that the majority of the fans want to hear it every time. Aerosmith has been doing Dream On for over forty years, Metallica has been doing Enter Sandman since 1991, Kiss has been doing Rock N Roll All Nite for over forty years and so at every show that they have done. Most bands are probably tired of performing their biggest hits but do them because they want to continue touring so they can get paid.

And George Harrison's too, come to think of it, Ringo is the only Beatle whose ALBUMS I never bought. I loved a few of his singles, of course, and still do "Snookeroo" and "It Don't Come Easy" for example. But he never held me for an entire album. Not like the other three.
