I'm glad to find out someone else plays rpgs like this! My last fallout nv character was John Gun, a chronic nudist that prided himself on his ability to hide an arsenal in his boxer briefs. Most people in the wasteland thought the gunslinger was a weirdo, but when Arcade tossed him his ranger armor, nobody wanted to mess with him. Despite the atrocities he committed, most factions of the mojave loved the naked man. Small communities like the boomers and freeside always greeted him with a smile while major players like the NCR and the Legion constantly sent men out to get his bare ass. It's so much fun using your imagination and it makes me sad when people say it's weird. Thanks for the great video dude

I find that's a hard temptation to break out of, especially in games I've already played many times over. In Fallout NV, for example, I'll often wander around a locale to level up if I need more points to pass a skill check in dialogue, even if the skill doesn't really match my character. It's hard not to be "optimal," even though that optimization impedes the interactive storytelling that makes this kind of game really shine.

I know that feel in Nv too where it "if only i had this leveled up just a bit more and ill miss the EXP if i dont..." but lemme tell you its not worth the exp points if youre not even furthering in that skill anyway. like easy petes explosives, none of my characters have used explosives much. I tend to sell them because theyre worth a ton of caps. And with my most recent playthrough its just been more fun to ignore the desire of "i need all this trash i could find and put it in my bag to sell later" and even ignoring the speech check requirements if i dont have the points or skill mags to help reach it right now. this behavior just lets me go back to continuing the game and enjoying it as is cause that continuation is part of the story too.

I never actually role-play in these games, I just explore the world and story in a way that fits me, and usually RPG games give me the most satisfaction because of it.
And through all these games I play the exact same character, with the exact same play-style which I find the most enjoyable.
The more I feel like the world reacts to what I do, the more fun I end up having... Reacting to myself in my head without the feedback of the world will just feel depleting...
There are very few games that actually react to what you do - Gothic 2 had that part where if you choose to enter the city through the sea, there will be a reaction to it... And these type of reactions make you feel heavily rewarded.
I think that combining elements from The stanley parable with RPG games will be the perfect experience for me - because it'll feel like a world with choices that actually reacts to how I interact with it, giving me a consistant feeling that the world plays together with me, rather than with myself.
The more I feel like I'm trying to play with toys, the less satisfaction I get... Because the world will never be consistant with how I play, and it'll be a deflating experience.
The whole "play someone else" concept eludes me in video games that grant me the option to just be in the world... It can work with friends while playing pen and paper role playing games, yet, with myself it won't speak to me as much as just being the highly specific character I like to play as.

    • @cabbagemontage6999

@@stayskeptic3923 What I do is not real roleplaying, it's more just reacting to the world... And projecting my own morality and ideas into the gameplay itself.
I never remember a story of the character, only the world.
Heck, I don't even remember my gameplay... Only the bits and pieces of the world that called out, or certain design choices and encounters, like, seeing a couple dead on a bed... I don't think about how my character reacts to any of it, there's only my reaction, and the fact it made an impression on me.
What Leadhead is doing is real roleplaying with the game, and it's incredible.
Because he does make a character, and the reactions/interactions he plays out come from that character, like, he might decide not to enter a place, because his character might just think it's a bad idea, or, he'll actually not progress the game, but, sit in a location, and have his own inner story moment that is completely irrelevent to the game, but, for his character, it's actually a key moment of his experience.
I remember an episode on fallout on zero punctuation where he made fun on the whole concept of trying to actually role play in fallout even, he already noted the key reasons why such a thing is always off.
If anything, Leadhead managed to make something big out of it, and shared it with us.

    • @sweetpeabee4983
      @sweetpeabee4983 3 роки тому +2

Yeah, I get this. For me, it's less world-building that I get really interested in and more just...talking to people. I love interacting with NPCs and care about learning all about them _way_ more than I do building up my own character. This tends to mean despite my best efforts, I always end up playing an extremely nosy, inquisitive character that way too aggressively tries to befriend everyone lol. 😅
But tbh I've found this is less of a problem in RPGs that are a little less open and more towards binary choice on the spectrum -- for me, stuff like Disco Elysium is just the right balance between choice & direction for RP in a game (tho ymmv ofc). When the character is more "written" but I get several really solid options, then it's way easier to feel like my character is also someone interesting to learn about, if that makes sense?

This was great! And a really good example of real roleplaying games, like new vegas. On the part where you described things that you don't need to do but for the playthrough, I was roleplaying as a Benny clone, I was sent to replace Benny an basically my goal was to find Benny and replace him, but I didn't want anyone to even know about me killing people so in the hotel with powder hangers I deliberately placed all of the hangers bodies and certain positions to make it look like they killed each other and the last one killed himself in the closet. Speaking in terms outside of the playthrough, it was unnecessary, but it is by far my most memorable moment in that playthrough so far and I haven't forgotten it despite not being able to play for months

I don't know why or how, but recently I've been think of how do I play roleplaying games, a genre I've never been able to really enjoy. Ive played fallout, fable, sorta popular rpgs, like dues ex and whatnot, but I could never get into character. I always chose things and options that were most convenient for me, and I've only recently for some strange reason, thought of this very question in the title. I hope this a possible answer to this question of mines. Cause holy heck that'd be cool and inspiring!

I wish I could play RPGs like you can.
I simply find it too hard to be someone I'm not. That doesn't usually bother me in games like GTA because I can actually distance myself from the ppl I play as, but in games like nv, I just play as myself, spending time to painstakingly recreate myself as best I can, and playing the game as I would if I were there. That's why second playthroughs never work out for me.
I'd rather spend 300 hours as one character than have the same amount of playtime across different ones.

I kinda of do something similiar but I try to mix things up by roleplaying as characters from other media, on one Fallout playthrough of mine I played as Dell Conagher A.K.A the Engineer from TF2, while I wouldn't really roleplay minor choices I wouldn't choose ones that would completely contradict Conagher's character, such as being mean if he wanst previously provoked to do so.
I would however roleplay major choices, such which faction he was going to go with (in that playthrough I believed he would pick Mr. House solely due to his pragmatism, and also because he has a robot army), meaningful interactions with NPCs would count too, such why he would try to convince Ulysses to step down, or talk philosophy with Caesar, or ultimately decide to go with Joshua's plan etc.
this way I can still be mostly myself but still have variety in my playthrough, since I would modify my playstyle and perk/points distribution a little to be more akin to the character.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that you don't need to go head in into roleplaying and take a lighter approach, basically having your cake and eating it too.

first four minutes of this video really spoke to me. you're absolutely right, the greatest RPG games stimulate your imagination. you find yourself practically welcoming the omissions left by the game as it lets you fill in the blanks yourself. Every item, '10MM pistol', 'lead pipe', will adopt it's own unique story in the protagonist's hands and contributes to an accelerating sense of depth which culminates in a sense of immersion that leaves you feeling like you've just finished reading a novel. So gratifying to hear my own thoughts said by somebody else, and presented so well. thank you.

Before I saw this video, I did actually try making up stories in my head for my character as well, but I thought it was sort of cheesy and played it like a looter-shooter without thinking much of the reason “why my character did it”. The one thing I love about NV is the DLC's.

You'd didn't change my view on RPGs, but rather brought the light I needed in order to see that view. I could never explain it any better.
I remember having a interesting story for a Skyrim character (although I did mod it to the point it made my computer cry literal tears), and I'd usually play Skyrim around Christmas time but it would take some serious work. It's been so long I forgot most of the details, including all the characters' names, but I think it's still a cool story.
I had to put in the replies because it was longer than I thought it was.

This is the story of a weak and feeble want to be merchant. He wakes ups by some rocky misty area lying right by a broken carriage. he completely forgot most of his far past, but it was coming to him slowly. Not wanting to be left alone in the dark, he decides to go east.
By more dumb luck than anything, he survives and ends up in Riverwood. He goes the tavern and finds a bard playing, with it being clear she doesn't even know how to hold a musical instrument right, wanting to ask her for water so he doesn't starve to death. The bard explains she wants to go out and adventure out into Skyrim. Our protagonist asks whats stopping her, and it comes down to she doesn't know where to go, where to start, how to be diplomatic, or even when to know not to fight.
So a deal is settled, she follows him around, and she stops our protagonist from being killed. though first fight in and our protagonist realizes that his companion: She was able to make a man fall off a cliff with her voice. He tried to ask about the matter, she didn't give him a straight answer. Then in another fight, she managed to make the orc bandit leader cower in fear. Then in another does the same thing, excepts cooks a man alive. And it's clear that she has some magic power. But our protagonist doesn't ask, afraid that she'll turn him to ice if he pushes too much.
During this time, our protagonist realizes his fighting stye: don't get caught, bow to the head then slice the guy closest to him, using a sword and shield for everything else. He also spends his time to try and become the best blacksmith in Skyrim, with so far little success.
At one point he goes into Riften's prison because he can. He finds a note talking about a Khajiit that wants to be locked up in a cell. So much he's paying the guards to keep him IN prison. Our protagonist wants to meet this interesting character, so he finds the key to the cell and meets up with Inigo (the only character I remember because the mod is the best I have ever seen for the game). So Inigo starts begging our protagonist to kill him. He says no, mostly because being charged for murder is less than preferable other than him trying to be a good person. Inigo explains why he wants to be killed: that he betrayed the protagonist and and left him to die, and it left a guilty conscious.
Our protagonist, still not wanting to murder some suicidal Khajiit, even if he did betray him, goes "Alright, hows this sound. You fight along me, prevent me from being killed, follow my orders, without pay, for a few months and you can consider yourself redeemed."
He accepts the deal and now we have a party of three. Our protagonist slowly feeling as if he is an important leader, a feeling he never had, one that made him have confidence for once in his life.
After a long time, our protagonist manages to start competing against the man who forges the companions weapons and armor, the best blacksmith of all of Skyrim. Creating equipment near equal, if not better, than him. Another boost of confidence.
He goes to Solitude, the wealthiest-- and also the least racist for Inigo-- city in Skyrim. The plan was to buy a house there, start getting materials and extra merchandise from adventuring, then start selling everything in Solitude where he could inflate the prices.
The trio get a deal to investigate a cave in exchange for the opportunity to buy a house. After casually stopping a Deadra reincarnation attempt, the trio managed to haggle money also from the Yarl. But something was happening to Inigo, he was having visions and constant headaches; A healing potion didn't solve the problem. Our protagonist thought to shrug it off in case it's something just in Inigo's head.
One night at the tavern, or out in the wilderness, somewhere... Our protagonist reads a book about a legendary hero called the Dragonborn who was to save the world at some point. And after thinking about it. He realizes his female companion was it, she was the Dragonborn (and I will be refereeing to her as such from now on). This hurts his confidence, thinking that he's not as special as he first thought he was. But he had Inigo at least to relate to.
At one point, Inigo's visions became extremely frequent and surprisingly clear. Because it's now clear it's a evil magic user issue, the trio start to follow the trial.
They get there and find out that it wasn't a evil magic user issue, just a Regular magic user issue. This wizard guy explains that Inigo was supposed to be the chosen one, for something, and was meant to save the world at some point. This creates a massive drop in our protagonist confidence in two ways. First is the obvious of our protagonist not feeling special in the group, that he's just the compass to lead the way and the silver tongue to keep them out of trouble. And the second needs some explaining.
See, The Dragonborn and Inigo did not get along at all. They would insult each other, "Accidentally" hit the other maliciously, to even literally trying to kill each other. And the only one keeping them working together was our protagonist. Both felt as if they needed to stay, one to repay their debts, one to continuing adventuring. And now, our protagonist had two world saving heroes he needed to get along. Heroes that he knows could overpower him in combat. He could barley fight, he was easily overpowered, and is a barely passable excuse for a leader. The only thing that he had going for him was he was on the near top level of blacksmithing. but this was not meant to last.
After awhile, our protagonist starts losing to his competition. Never figured out why. So what money he had, he bought the house and started planning his very early retirement. But he wasn't sure if it was just having someone to look up too, the fact he was about to give up adventuring, or if it's genuine. But our protagonist starts to fall in love with the Dragonborn. Something about her decapitating a bandit made him realize that. Inigo's time was almost up, he was soon to leave with his debts re-payed. So, our protagonist starts figuring out how your suppose to get married in Skyrim, while also buying whatever he needed to help make Inigo's dream life in the Rift easier to get to.
But then something horrible but amazing happened, he discovered a cave in some old destroyed fort where there was a Storm-cloak and a Imperial soldier on the ground trying to get a bear to not kill them. Clearly the trio skin the bear, but not after the Storm-cloak got eaten.
The Imperial solder thanks us and explains that a dragon attacked the fort about three months ago. This was a big "uh, oh." for the protagonist thinking that the Dragonborn, that he wanted to marry, was going to leave and never come back. The soldier also explains that he has an uncle in Riverwood and we should visit him sometime. So the trio does. The soldier's uncle was a blacksmith and naturally gets into a conversation about the subject. The uncle reminds our protagonist a trick that brings him to the peak of his ability, also the uncle didn't mind his stuff being taken right in front of him. This was it, the thing he needed to be the greatest blacksmith in Skyrim.
The trio accidentally get into a battle with a dragon by Whiterun and win. Our protagonist takes the the scales and bones and realizes what he can do. Dragon armor, it's brilliant. Our trio go on a quest to kill dragons for the sake of armor. In the middle of it, our protagonist figured out he can make an explosive powder with fire salts and charcoal. He has created a weapon that can fire a bunch of rocks at high speeds or it can fire a ball of metal that can explode in great force. Creating the ultimate dragon slaying weapon. With this our trio create great armor, and face off the most powerful of foes.
The protagonist manages to propose to the Dragonborn, who apparently was waiting since the first few months they met for him to make the first move. After preparing for a wedding and a new life, Inigo explains to our protagonist that he plans to stay a long time. As Inigo's debt is only payed when he says it was payed. And with Inigo as our protagonist's best man (-essentially- don't think there's a Nordic equivalent), nobody showed up to the wedding except some naked(accept for a lion cloth) Khajiit who took the middle row who left the moment the ceremony was over. No body knew who that was.

    • @PantherCat64
      @PantherCat64 3 роки тому

It was going great, our protagonist opened up his own shop and started making so much money, he might have caused mass inflation in Skyrim at one point. This was it, our protagonist didn't need to be destined to fight great evil in order to be as great as the heroes who fought by him. At one point the Dragonborn explains she's pregnant (first, if it wasn't clear this game was modded, it is now. two, didn't think I had the mod installed yet). Which creates panic within our protagonist. He started hiring mercenaries to follow the the trio, and at one point decided to join the legion. Our protagonist was thinking that he didn't want his child to be born in a state of civil war, and wanted to end it.
The Dragonborn stopped following at this point, and our protagonist started to lose his humanity as he fought every battle. Being very cruel and merciless in his tactics. But he got to Ulfric Stormcloak and couldn't bare to kill him. Our protagonist realize, though his original intent was good about fighting the war, he could not kill a man who brought his country to ruin to try and bring a form of religious freedom to Skyrim. Yeah he was a bad leader in every sense, but in a weird way, our protagonist saw a bit of him self in Ulfric. A man who had originally good intent, but was a horrible leader, seekd to succeed and prove himself. It was only a matter of time our protagonist would have been just like him, destroying everything he knew and loved without realizing it. To kill Ulfric is almost like killing his mistakes, instead of learning from it.
That was it, the war was over. Our protagonist won the war, but lost more importantly: a piece of himself. how did he go from wanting to sell goods and be the greatest blacksmith in Tameral, to killing hundreds by himself or his leadership for the sake of a cause he didn't even think about the future about? Was this who he wanted his child to look up to, a man who killed many not for trying to do good but rather his own self insecurity?
He goes on one last adventure, he accidentally breaks into the temple of Dabela. No really, it was an accident. Though Inigo never said anything, so who knows. The priestess' got mad at us and said "Either help us or die". We helped them rescue a kidnapped child. And in the middle of saving some little girl, our protagonist with a clear conscious. Sees a black figure and then...
He's back lying at the cart, except in the snow. He asks directions and travels to Riverwood. He finds the same bard in the same tavern. He asks about many questions, only to freak her out. Our protagonist thought it was a dream. But a voice in the back of his head said "This is what you deserve."
He was in horrible sadness that everything in his life was back to the beginning. But felt as if it could also be a blessing. That now he has become a better person, he can prevent the mistakes he made and create a better life for whoever he could. Also maybe a larger wedding reception.
Pretty much the same events happen except our protagonist already has the knowledge he had before, but not the same straight. He made better choices, for example this time and ended up adopting a Khajiit son from the caravans, as that was one his regrets not doing. and got his armor and weapons early, and also is trying to run a business into bankruptcy for some reason. (This last part was my in lore explanation for the corrupted save files and having to restart the game)
Holy crap, this took over five hours to write, and I did it one session! woo go me. I'ma gonna have some salsa and chips

Update: Her name is Sophie. She was originally a farmer living on a ranch with her family but due to the NCR moving in and taxing, she had to do additional work for her family. She now wants to get the NCR to leave her family. She has an alcohol addiction and really hates attention and much rather steal stuff (hence why she hates the strip).
She recently met Lily, a Nightkin who lives in jacobstown. She really wants her to stay sane and so she has started researching on her own when she can to help her. (Get a high enough science stat to pass the science check with the doctor).

I always struggled with choices in role play games and was always ending up with a badass altruist. I was just living in the character I'm creating.
About half a year ago I decided to play New Vegas the second time (first time was not long after release. I pirated it and stopped playing when lightning fried my PC.)
First time I played it as I wanted, ended up with badass high-tech altruist - Daniel Decart. He had a good story tho. And then I was committed to play as an absolute villain. But not "Kill everyone challenge" it's boring.
    Second character - Fail.
Principless assassin, who came to Mojave from the southeast to escape Legion's presence years prior, becoming NCR spy, has started to look at the bigger picture and reevaluated everything she new after she was convinced by the Caesar himself (Hegel Rhetoric), after that, following him exclusively. Joined Legion, removed tumor. And in the process, becoming some sort of a puppet master. Felt bad for people and tried to make the best she could so their lives under Legion will be as painless as possible.
Third Character - still uncomplete, but obviously - fail.
Previous ones was quite easy thanks to good management. This one is 1 int. terrifying presence hardcore close combat-based Tarr who's being idiotic potato in the past and taking simple courier jobs to survive, gets two 9 mm in the head. Now he's an idiotic Devil killing NCR and Legion on sight. And yet... Well... He teamed up with Arcade cause he really needs help (1 int. remember?). Then becoming smth of an antihero. "Lethal Force man". And as he's stupid enough to think that he's a superhero he's helping people of Mohave exclusively and fighting all of the bad guys there are.
Fourth? "Kallie". This one is finally what I was looking for. Cannibalistic selfish criminal with the devil's luck. With the trick. She has 1 strength and 3 stamina 'cause she has an uncurable undisclosed condition. But she cares only about her own good, so it is possible that she'll seek treatment...
It's funny how against my intent their personality shapes in the process of playing. In the end, first two already felt like the real human beings. I understand now why NW is so praised.
Thank you for coming to my TEDtalk.

I honestly have a really good time finding RolePlay aspects in games that arnt meant for roleplaying. I did this in Far Cry 5, Red Dead Online, Halo, and WWE games just to name a few. Something about a game not being meant for that playstyle, insintivises me to try and do it even more. The only thing I need is a character creator(or even just the option to change up my clothes if the character creator isnt totally in depth) and I will be well on me way

Loved the vid, but I have to mention one thing. When just getting into an rpg, I usually play the character how I would, or how I want to initially. I learn about the different factions and make my own decisions based around my own morals. This makes it so when you finish the first playthrough it’s what *you* did that leaves an impersonation on you. I mean I can still remember parts of my first fallout nv playthrough vividly, and feeling emotional about the ending and what happened through it because I experienced it. Though this impact lessens on subsequent playthroughs, and that’s when I start to play as a character. So that it’s like playing it for the first time again through different eyes

I think I like the moment to moment experience of role playing in a situation without much as jank as possible. The broader story or motivations I don’t think I really care about.
I think that’s why I enjoyed (parts) of Metro Exodus so much (especially in the Volga), where you just have ur guns and are trying to ‘be’ (survive) as “realistically” as possible. The nice graphics and the current gen handling, as hudless as possible, really inspired (?) me.
The bigger story and the paranormal elements I didn’t enjoy so much, the Caspian see neither as it felt too over the top, not like I’m trying to survive moment-to-moment, as much as with my thoughts as the reality of the situation.
Similarly, or differently (depending on how u look at it) this makes me also check corners. But I’d look away from some set pieces like the ship you mentioned (can’t risk them seeing me), and id slowly walk along the Volga instead of running even tho logically I know it’s safe, because “realistically” I’m tired and cold and running might make me stick out more anyway - better to slowly crouch walk along with the cover of the hill.
This is a way that I most enjoy to play these sorts of games.

You are a magician. I've always wanted to poses this mindset, because I love rpgs too. But usually I digress to a do good, be a hero, loot everything free type of guy. Because it's easy. And because this way you don't skil any content.
Actually it's a pretty important point. Only if you fill your gameplay with imagination you don't feel left out of the missed content.

This is my favorite aspect of a game like new vegas. New vegas is one of my favorite games period. My first hardcore run was a dude with no charisma, high int, high luck. I really came to embody my character and would really think about each decision made. I got to the point that I had different outfits for different occasions. If I was out on the town gambling I would be in my finest leisure suit.
Once I finished the gauntlet that was the end of the game I ended up booting up a pacifist medic character based upon a character from a fallout fanfic. This was from back in the days when I was a brony so it was Velvet Remedy from Fallout Equestria. Still a really good fanfic that was loved enough that it's been printed multiple times as 5 hardback books. I haven't been apart of that fandom for 4 years now but still keep a couple backgrounds from fallout Equestria specifically because of how much I adored the series. Though I never finished it project horizons is a great extension that is twice the length and even darker.
Fallout used to be my life, which is why Fallout 4 felt like such a let down. I bought the pipboy edition and the mini nuke anthology collection. But fallout 4 felt like it threw away all the roleplay aspects that made the series good in exchange for shitty voice acting and slightly better action. I would rather have fights be entirely conveyed by text rather than sacrifice the heart of the series for mass appeal. This is why I have come to love games like NEO Scavenger which are exactly that, text based in terms of conveyance.
It is like the old adage of horror films that an unseen terror is much more terrifying than seeing the monster. The human psyche can construct infinitely more detailed and engaging stories than any single person can convey via visuals or text. Give us the platform for our imagination to go wild.
A great example of how inadequate visuals can be is adaptations of books, I grew up reading the artemis fowl novels in elementary school. When I am reading about a dwarf and hear that he can unhinge his jaw and has certain grotesque features my brain conjures up a ratfink art esque design. Because the ability to unhinge ones jaw and eat dirt and rocks seems entirely divorced from a human esque appearance, thus I prescribed an entirely cartoonish and animalistic appearance. Then this year when a trailer dropped for artemis fowl all the designs for the fantastical creatures are just people in costumes or with pointy ears etc. The entire luster and inherent fantasy being sucked out of it.
I've rambled, but the point is less is more. If you give a strong framework and allow people to have interpretations and freedom it will make the experience wholly rewarding. But if you are obsessive about not letting anything be withheld, take the mysticism away, and take away choice for fear of confusion, it will only lessen the value of the work as a whole. Curiosity is what keeps a property alive, so long as there is mysteries to be solved people will engage with it because their brain wants a solution to the problem. In the case of a fallout game it is curiosity about how the world functions in the post apocalypse, what infrastructure has arisen, what factions have come about, how is everyone being fed. The fact that the world is fragmented due to the lack of large infrastructure means the only way to get answers is to explore the ruins of society. This means that you can practically have a fallout based anywhere and the core conceit should have no end to the depths that it can reach. Boiling it down to a simple shooter entirely squanders that potential. Fallout 4 isn't a bad game, it's just a bad fallout game.
