Great video! I have an old HO scale 2-8-2 steamer from about 1948 that I bought on Ebay. It has sloppy wheel axle spacing from, I'm sure, decades of prior use. I am trying to figure out how to remove a lot of the slop so that the locomotive runs smoother. To it's credit, this old engine still chugs along even with it's handicap! Thanks again.
I wish I could help you, but never having had one of those or even seen one of those I wouldn't know where to begin. If you wanted to send me some pictures of the running gear and the weak points maybe I could suggest some kind of 'fix". You may email me at theshadetreefixitman@gmail.com Thanks so much for stopping by
Sadly, I no longer have my layout or any of my train related parts. I moved 4 years ago and had to dismantle my layout before moving and gave away most of my stuff. Sorry
Wow quite an ingenious method of repair. I have a bachmann 2-8-0 with the same issue that's been a shelf queen for a few years that I'll have to try this on.
+model railer I am preparing to sell the locomotives on eBay, since I hadn't heard from you regarding the swap in several months again. I don't have the money for shipping to you now, so perhaps we should just let the deal die. I am in need of some $$$ right now which those engines might be able to help provide. I'm sorry it hasn't worked out.
Will the shrink tubing work for the other axles???? Im having the same problem and now my drivers rods are bent because the plastic axles inside the locomotive are not doing their job. Ps. Plastic Axles inside the train ain't holding the wheels straight and proper and it is forcing the drive rods to Bend because the plastic axles are being stubborn. For anyone who didn't understand. Lol.
Good fix ...I have plastic welded parts with a soldering iron and having an extra piece of the same stuff for filling in It doesn't work on everything but worth a try
+not2fast4u2c This is so small and it needs to remain relatively balanced and I'm not sure how well welding it would work with this nylon stuff. I have used it in other circumstances though and a good resource when the time is right. Thanks Jim
This was a common problem, and even being NOS the parts are still subject to the deterioration of time. I hope this will help get you going again. Thanks for stopping by.
George there is this chemical that actually welds plastics, I have used it to repair my hot tub and also the interior of my car, you can mix paint into it to change its color its called plastease, it comes in a kit small bottle of powder and larger bottle of solvent. it actually intertwines with the plastic molecules and becomes one, water proof and solid. It sells for around 18.00 a kit but you can use it to repair a lot of plastic problems and it doesn't go bad. Check it out on ebay it may be useful on your trains.
+Mike Fifer I tried finding replacement parts on eBay, with no success. I haven't tried contacting Bachmann themselves though. If this fails again, that might be an avenue of fix. Thanks for the kind support Mike.
I tried super glue, same exact engine. It doesn't work on these plastic tubes at all. I would totally try this, but the largest gear has a few teeth missing, and I don't know where to find a replacement. I'll keep it around just in case.
I can understand your dilemma, but you might try taking a DVD player apart some time and experiment with the gears inside one of those, they just might work! Thanks for stopping by.
i picked up a bachmann challenger set with the yellow union pacific set at the goodwill for $7. the motor turns, light come on but will not pull. im just getting back into the hobby after many years. any recommendations on how to fix?
Dig in until you find the issue. It may be a broken or a stripped gear. Hard to tell without actually seeing it. You'll have fun in the process, which is the name of the game. Thanks for dropping by
Could be that the quartering is off. My Bachmann 4-8-4 ran beautifully until it did exactly what you explained. After tearing into it, I found the first axel came apart, the drive axel slips (so the tires slip out of quartering after 10 minutes of running) and it locks up. When I check, one of the drive wheels is off. Check there, you’ll probably find that’s the case with yours too.
Great fix! It's sad that Bachmann know about the split gears and axles issue but stop making spares :( It would have been useful if they at least passed on the tooling etc for someone else to continue producing them? 3d Printing might be one way of making them?
+Rusty “rustyglovebox” Glovebox I'm wondering how long it will work, but for now it is running. Thanks Lloyd. If it dies again we will have to think of something else or rust it up and put it on the scrap pile.
I had the same exact model I got in a set from hobby lobby and the locomotive broke 4 days after I got it while it was running but I couldn’t fix it and I ruined it :
oh well, mine was a christmas gift in 2010, not sure if they were originally plastic axles and Bachmann switched to metal to improve or if they switched from metal to plastic to shave costs.
+Scott Downey I am sure it is all a matter of how fast and cheap it can be done. Mike Pfifer says this is a common problem with Bachmann, and not just with this particular engine. Thanks for stopping by Scott.
A very creative repair George. Great job!. If you get a minute, please check out my video called "something old #7, the Christmas train". I think you may enjoy it.

It's a runner! You have done it again my friend, Good video, nice lookin engine...enjoyed it, as usual. Thanks, see ya next time.
+joel mccoin Thank you Joel.
haha a thats awesome George! I love that little thing running down the track.
+model railer It's not smooth, but it runs and cheap transportation. Building the steam fleet. They are ALL running now!

You truly know how to run a railroad George!
+cutworm59 As long as the wheels turn. Thanks Steve

And George, the fix-it man, fixes it again! Good work!
+kd5gbb Thank you for the encouragement.
I have the exact same train with the same problem lol. Helpful video!
Glad it helped! Thanks for stopping by.
I have a new old stock 2-8-0 it has the same issue. It ran great for 2 days.
This was a common problem, and even being NOS the parts are still subject to the deterioration of time. I hope this will help get you going again. Thanks for stopping by.
Great idea, but I would put some locktite super glue on it to. After a good cleaning with Dawn dish soap and hot water.
Good idea. It is still working 6 years later, though I don't use it a lot. Thanks

+The Shade Tree Fix-it Man That is a VERY common Bachmann problem. I replaced the gear in my G Scale with a Northwest Shortline metal gear.
Mike
+Mike Fifer I didn't see anything listed on eBay. The Walther's catalog perhaps?
+The Shade Tree Fix-it Man I am not sure if they make those animals for HO.
Thanks , Mike
I have that same bachmann locomotive going to try that great idea
Enjoy fixing it up! Glad I could help.

What size heat shrink tubing did u use
I don't remember now, sorry, but the smallest one you can fit is what you want. Thanks for taking a look

You can get 3d printed axles on a website called shapeways. I have fixed 2 of my split chassis engines with them.
Nice deal on that for sure! Have a good'nnn

lol
not bad for $2 plus a bit of shrink tube

oh well, mine was a christmas gift in 2010, not sure if they were originally plastic axles and Bachmann switched to metal to improve or if they switched from metal to plastic to shave costs.

Enjoy it, mine is still going strong after 3 years since the repair. Thanks for stopping by.
The Shade Tree Fix-it Man do you have a fix for this engine for when the engine keeps on bouncing and the front wheel always derailing?
If there is a way to fix it you will find it. Some times I wonder what in the ?#@ they are thinking when manufacturing things.Scott
