Check out what Wikipedia says: "The 'hanging outside of the skyscraper' sequence used techniques similar to those on Lloyd's most famous film, the silent Safety Last! (1923). Actually, I watched a documentary on Harold Lloyd and the making of "Safety Last" and "Feet First." I wish I could remember more about it. I've been trying to find it, but have been unsuccessful so far. I do remember that there were some precautions taken, like a mattress underneath him. But the safety measures were not great. Let's just say, you wouldn't catch me filming something like that at actual height, fake front and mattress notwithstanding. :)

Then I remembered that when I was a kid I used to like this Harold Lloyd guy, so I did a search and found The Safety Last. We had such fun together watching it. She's asleep now, as I'm watching these. I am literally crying tears trying to suppress my laughter. This is funnier than I remembered. And I can see the resemblance in the extremely funny Frank Drebin's concrete dildo scene. :)

I know they used fake building fronts with a short drop mounted on top of actual tall buildings & filmed from a cute angle, but I'm not sure they used such camera tricks on all these "thrill" flics; is it true that on some films Harold was actually climbing the building front itself all those storeys up?
i find the stunt very good but the sequence of events while hanging isnt realistic. people from down the street may have notice a man is hanging on the building or flatform especially waterhose segment. its just a performance.

The gantry going up and down. Really, those two up there on the roof couldn't decide which way they were going? Couldn't they feel the difference in weight? I guess those bars are a precaution against anyone falling out of the window. Interesting as today's glass building windows won't open or if anything no more than a crack. Guess they've had a few jumpers.
