  • Here’s a FREE theory/technique lesson of mine on improvising for semi-advanced musicians.
Caveat.. Learning to improvise in any genre is probably best achieved by studying the oral history (or in this case the “aural” history) of that particular genre. In other words, transcribe a ton of solos from the masters and hopefully the metamorphosis will begin. Having said that, sometimes it’s helpful to look at things from different angles. This can be beneficial in a couple of ways. 1. It gets you to move beyond your comfort zone. 2. It enables you to look at something from a different angle, which can be useful in the heat of battle. If you have more than one way get to a certain destination, it’s more likely that one of the options to get there will reveal itself in real time.
Ok, so here we go. I’ve been teaching on line via SKYPE and at Musician’s Institute for many years and I’m always a bit uncomfortable suggesting what scale should be chosen for a given situation when asked. It’s not that scales and patterns aren’t valuable, thinking that way can tend to be fools gold because the potential lack of attention to harmony and phrasing. One of the exceptions to my hesitance to talk about scales is the pentatonic scale which acts more like an arpeggio than a scale. Major Pentatonic 1 3 5 6 9. Minor Pentatonic 1b3 5 b7 11. I think you see what I’m getting at. Back to scales for a moment. The melodic minor scale is interesting for a number of reasons. There are no “avoid” notes. (avoid notes are notes that don’t sound quite right as a destination over a particular chord. i.e. F on a C maj.7 chord. Of course there are exceptions to every rule. Actually, there are no rules!) The various degrees of the scale act in a similar way to the modes of a major scale. Scales with names like Mixolydian b6 and Lydian Dominant are derived from different degrees of the melodic minor scale. Back to pentatonic scales. An interesting and common way to alter a minor pentatonic scale is to change the b7 to a natural 6. Example. A min.6 A C D E F#. It just so happens that 2 of these Minor 6 Penatonic scales exist in the melodic minor scale, so I started experimenting interesting ways (at least interesting to me) to use that information.
If you take two chords, for instance, A minor 6 and E7 altered (derived from F melodic minor), there are two minor 6 pentatonic scales available for each chord.
A-6 and B-6 for the A minor 6 chord. F-6 and G-6 for the E7 altered chord. Since there are no “avoid” notes, these scales are interchangeable over their designated chords. You can also look at these scales as being a Minor 6 arpeggio with 4th or a Dominant 7 arpeggio with a 2nd. A C D E F# , D E F# A C.
In the video, I am “soloing”over A-6 and E7 alt. with strict adherence to notes of the minor 6 pentatonic scales. I would recommend transcribing what I played to see how I’m manipulating the available options. Of course, this is just an exercise, so it’s a little limiting and therefore not free in terms of a stream of consciousness or story telling.
The groove along with the chord changes continues for another 3 minutes so that you can experiment with this theory/technique.
If you’ve got questions about this or want to get more out your guitar playing or whatever instrument , I have a few slots available for SKYPE LESSONS. I also teach at Musicians Institute in Hollywood every Tuesday. You can message me here or contact me at DeanBrownWeb@gmail.com for more info
Have fun with this, I’m going to! ~DB
