📚Description: Recently there has been a Reverb Ad playing all over UA-cam about a half-price Guild Surfliner only available on Reverb and I was curious if they were any good because I genuinely though the shape and headstock was pretty sweet. I reached out to Guild to see if they had any marketing units they could send me. Since this was an EOL (End of the Line) model they didn't, but within 2 hours, I got a message from Reverb saying I could have the two demo units they had at their HQ! This video was technically sponsored by Reverb with my payment being getting to keep these two guitars. My thoughts and opinions are my own and neither company was allowed to preview the video before posting.

For $269, if you need a new guitar, I don't think you can go wrong!

Yup, I don't need a new guitar at all but I still want it lol
Pro-tip: I hit the heart on the Reverb listing, and shortly after they sent me an offer for another 5% off. So that took it to $255. After taxes it was around $280.
I miss the "1st Fret Neckdepth" shirt popping up at the appropriate time 😔
Already gone 😢
sorry poor english.
is there shipping in Ukraine?
I ordered one of these. And it came in the basic box which was clearly not appropriate to ship in. I’ve never received a guitar in such condition. Yours was shipped in a 2nd box. Mine was destroyed when the guitar arrived. When I gave it a look-over, the body had a crack in it near the heel. Also, I thought the finish sucked and the maple neck was not finished well. I returned it to guild. I shipped it back in my own 2nd box because there was no way the guitar was going to make the return trip in just the original box. I got my full refund.
A quick wipedown of the neck will do wonders for the tacky feel of the neck out of the box. What issue did you have with the gloss finish? These were double boxed since two were ordered and Reverb supplied these rather than Guild
Mine also came in a single basic box that wasn't very good for shipping.
Given that the video was sponsored, it is NOT unbelievable to think they sent him the best they had as best as they could. I don't know why they would do that as Trogly ALWAYS discloses everything from how it's boxed to a small ding.
A Squier Bullet with Guild on the headstock. Obviously, Trogly is making a small commission on each one and is being dishonest about the quality. I’m done with this channel.
@@APMTenants As someone who actually bought one I have to disagree with you here. I will concede that the tone and volume knobs are not good. They are very loose and it can sometimes be difficult to engage the coil split because of that. But that's my only complaint. While the neck did feel raw and tacky, it got smoother as I played it, unlike the Squier Affinity strat I had, and the Guild now has a smooth satin feel. The frets have been done very well, there's no sharp edges and if the frets are uneven, I haven't noticed, which is more than I can say for my Squier 40th Anniversary Tele's neck. I got it roughly a month ago and it's been my main guitar since (although I'll have to see if that changes if/when I get a new neck for my tele). Like I said, the setup out of the box was great, it feels great to play (aside from the knobs), and sounds incredible. I don't know what other reasons you have for not trusting this channel, but this really shouldn't be one.
In case anyone is curious, that headstock is identical to the old microfrets guitars from the late 60s and early 70s. Super rare and super cool!
Is it me or does this thing sound amazing with gain!!!!?
I love Guild, but damn, those switches are ugly.
Agreed.
😂
The switches are personally really cool looking to me
It’s the 23 frets for me. Should’ve gone the whole way and made it 24
This would be a good guitar if it has a regular five way
That thing roared to life with distortion. Sounded thin before.
probably due to the amp, to my ear a small SS practice thingy.
Trogly's setup makes most guitar demos sound thin...
@@lichbricksI think even audio from an iPhone video is better
I love the shape. Now if Heritage would have made that shape within the revived Harmony line I would be be very interested.
Wow that's pretty specific
Those distortion tones were really good.
I have the OG HSS version and play it all of the time. Weird neck to get used to, but i like it now.
I want the white one from those
I've got a Guild Polara Standard, rocks my world. Guild make great guitars for the price point. Also they are friends with the word distortion, the Guild pickups really like that, makes them sound very meaty indeed and they also have a lot of sustain as well
The distorted overtones of that guitar reminds me of the guitar tone in "Stars" by the band Hum. Suffice to say, I dig it.
The original HSS was a mini-humbucker, the new ones with the vibrato have swapped that for a full sized humbucker, and a more traditional 5-way switch.
I play the Surfliner HH and I love it. The exact same one you have the Shoreline Mist.
I just got a canyon dusk one and I love it! I also painted the headstock black and its pretty tough
I've played one of those HSS ones at my local music store, the orange looks nice in person and they feel real nice. If I joined a surf rock band as a rhythm guitarist it would probably be my go to as a unique looking not fender specifically still surfy guitar.
Hey, that's the Micro-Frets headstock shape.
Yeah, similar, but different in the way that Epi-and Gibson are... just enough! Either way, great eye, man! Most people wouldn't notice that obscure of a guitar similarity =)
Guild actually started using this headstock shape a couple years before Micro-Frets was even founded.
I thought the same!
I really hear a difference in your playing you have more of those harmonic feels down on your picking exspecially my compliments to your practice paying off please more good feels it so tastefully works. please do more noteworthy licks of the great music you like to play they are so note worthy. Again my compliments to you Mr. Trogly's
I have never seen a guitar with a maple fretboard that doesn't look aesthically pleasing. This one is no exception.
No way, man, the bridge split with the full neck HB was the best sound as far as I can tell.
Guild makes very high quality twelve string acoustic guitars. Roger Hodgson from Supertramp has used one religiously for many years.
Tom Scholz always has played a guild 12 and a 6!
YES!
There's way more fret variety besides 22 or 24. Fender typically does 21, and 20 isn't super uncommon on some vintage based models as well. While 23 is more rarer to see, it's not uncommon. Anything between 20 to 24 is normal.
oh wow, I was like duh once you stated what the guitar was :) Seems like an absolutely killer deal for any beginner, tinkerer, or even a gigging musician that needs a simple workhorse. I just can't justify it right now. I'm down to 14 guitars ;)
If you can't justify buying a new guitar just build a partscaster. You can get a brand new guitar without even buying a guitar.
I was thinking with the right delay or reverb there were some nice clean tones coming out of it. Then you hit the distortion and I kinda fell in love. I like the offset and overall it's interesting enough, but I would have to try those switches to see if I hate them or could get used to them.
I think the guitar is super good , was really surprised
15:30 reminds me Bon Jovi, but played by Kyuss!
Nice comparison there. I hear that.
Kinda gives off Fender Jazzmaster vibes to me. Sounded nice tho especially on the dirty side ....
I had no idea these were being so heavily promoted haha. The first time I saw one was when I was looking for unique bridge/tailpiece assemblies to use with an offset hardtail partscaster I was building. I loved the look of the tune-o-matic with string-through ferrules. It has so much character that I eventually bought one. It reminds me of some of those classic 60s guitars that you don't see often anymore, like mosrites or danelectos.
On the looks of it, it's definitely a Fender Jazzmaster body shape, I'm not fond of the string-through design though. That blue one is so IN TUNE, it boggles my mind.
Would have been nice to get an hh and an hss
Actually I have been curious about those. Thanks for reviewing it!
TBH, as a die hard Gibson fan, I must say that Guild makes a darn good instrument. I think their decal on the headstock could be tarted up a bit though.
Nice looking Surfliner, Silver Mist is sweet. Pickups seem a little thin yet muddy, distortion covers (most) sins. Two switches where one would suffice? Lots of real estate everywhere for mods a plus but is it a good enough platform?
With 2, you can turn all p'ups off, and use 1 in a fun way ^^ with only one switch, you'd be searching for that right position, sometimes in the dark, I like that you can't miss, and no chance of knocking it out of position on accident. Reminds me of Fender Jaguar, or those 80's guitars with push button selectors. It's a unique look, I like unique, but it's not for everyone I get that too.
The silver one (silver? Im bad with colours) looks FANTASTIC
This would do alt rock shoe gaze things so well
I'm holding out for the deluxe to go on sale. or a nice used one. I checked out a green one at GC and it was surprisingly nice. it played nice & sounded great. Guild makes great acoustics though so not too surprised.
I quite liked these apart from the fretboard edges not being rolled, it looked as though they didn't even have a little sanding done to them to take the sharp edge away.
The natural neck and fretboard combined with the very basic screen printed logo makes them look cheap, like Squier Bullets do.
A slight tint to the maple would make a massive difference to these guitars and a two colour screen print would not make much of a difference to the price.
Talking about the price, to me they look like a $200 guitar
Canyon dusk is great, I have a polara deluxe in canyon dusk but on the surfliner I like the other color. That said I like the deluxe better, but this is a great deal.
Hoping this leads to Trogly deep-diving on vintage Guild USA guitars. They rival Gibson. Trust. I collect vintage Gibson and vintage Guild
I have a couple of 1973 Guild Blues Birds. Amazing Guitars!!
Guild was always my favorite acoustic company, now I'm loving some of the really unique electrics they're putting out. I hope they elbow into the budget and midrange market with guitars like these.
I have the evergreen deluxe surfliner and it rips. I honestly couldn't recommend these enough. Everything about these guitars from pickups to color to neck and playability is impressive. But if no one else wants them, not a problem for me I'll continue to buy them =).
I got the Shoreline Mist one and I love it. I'm surprised you said the neck seemed thin because I thought it was kinda chunky. But I'm used to a Tele, so compared to that, it kinda is. I couldn't pass up the price, though, and the quality is great. I'm glad you reviewed this one because I was curious what it looked like under the pickguard, but I didn't want to tear mine apart. I also think the switches are kinda funny because they look like consumer grade switches that you would find on a desk lamp from Target. 😆
By looking at those cavity sizes i’m pretty sure they have other models that comes with more features. This one is the basic one
The selector switches would take some practice. For those of us who switch pickup settings multiple times during a song, and need to do it very quickly, it could be challenging to avoid accidentally flipping both switches at once when the intent was to only flip the front one.
Otherwise, looks like a fun guitar that has a Fender-ish look.
BTW, while I love my Gibsons, the Guilds that I own, and those others I've played, are very high quality and sound great. Now to find someone who can play them well enough to bring their great sound to life. 😉
For 269 thats a great guitar if you like interesting shapes. id like to try one out myself. thanks for posting finally a affordible guitar here lol. buy a dozen for the price of one les paul standard from gibson. with that said what does that tell you gibson and i love my les pauls
Love the neck pickup. Really cool looking. Might have to get one and rout it for a Floyd.
oh hey, I have the surfliner deluxe! Cool guitar with a unique vibe. Love it; one of the main guitars I play these days.
I want the sunset orange one. I wish it was HSH with the push pull knobs for coil splits.
I took a chance on Canyon Dusk, keeping my fingers crossed that it arrives in good shape. Looks like a fun guitar to mod.
The blue one has intonation at least luckily set up right and just makes everything sound better and cool price.
Had one and sent it back. It's ok but honestly reminded me of squier affinity quality, kinda crazy they were asking $500 originally. Switches are interesting but too small for my taste. Neck is kinda meh feel for me. Fit and finish was honestly pretty good. Pickups weren't to my liking but I'm picky so YMMV. I'd say only get it if it's really your style and nothing else will do.
Those are nice looking guitars plenty of tone options and looks to be well made
Needs a rosewood fretboard neck version
Did you not see the pink one with the rosewood board and block inlays? It was literally in this video...
Love my Guilds. M80, S281, top notch. I will try one.
I like the guitar.. it sounds like a fender, but brighter.. but when you did the “chug” thing, I really didn’t care for it.. it reminded me of that guy who drives down the road with the speaker in his trunk trying to show off his bass, when in fact it sounds like his speakers are blown and it’s just rattling his windows, and every window in the neighborhood.
I own the HSS version. Absolutly love !!!
I think the switches are great. Picked one up myself a month back and I was shocked how good it was. Also I noticed the packaging was identical to the Indonesian squires so maybe same factory?
This seems like a very good product for the price. I’m very happy to see a guitar with this many features at this price, it really says a lot about Guild and their attention to working musicians and beginners alike. I wasn’t even compensated for saying that
This seems like a great kind of guitar if you really wanna muck around with ideas due to the large cavities for everything
I just bought a nice 5 string Ibanez bass made in Indonesia. Indonesians seem to make quality instruments!
There are several manufacturers abroad that do pretty damn good work .PRS is using Indonesia and China. I've heard that Indonesia is superior but that's probably just rumor mill. After all, Eastman is fantastic out of China
With the CNC machines it doesn't seem to matter too much as long as the QC is there.
Love that you’re giving Guild some attention. Check out the Starfires too (I-VI)
There is nothing Guild about these aside from the decals and parts "look", otherwise it's the same generic stuff you get from Amazon that massive factories in China and Indonesia crank out by the hundreds under various brand names per day. That being said, it's not necessarily a bad thing. Depends on what you want and what you get for your money. I've played some of this stuff from Amazon and eBay that have better components and quality than Epiphone for a quarter the price. There are higher levels of import Guilds in their traditional models like the Starfire or Polara lineup and the DeArmond versions from 10 years ago built mostly to original specs. I bought a new Starfire bass a couple months back when Sweetwater was blowing them out during a clearance for $799 shipped with case ($1499 previously). Made in Korea to perfection and good as the vintage IMO. Korean instruments are at Japanese quality levels these days from my experience. This Surfliner would be a fun mod guitar without too much to lose.
Evening Troglodytes!!! Canyon dusk all day!!
Seems strange that they went with a FRONT input jack, even though they were already routing the guitar from the back for the control knobs... If you're already doing a 'back route' then why not do a more convenient side jack?
I have daydreamt of purchasing this guitar after having owned five Guild acoustics (two of which I still have) but never an electric guitar of theirs. Only thing, I keep wondering if I want another solid body guitar. I've grown partial to thinline models lately, and the ones built by Guild may be awesome, but they're not really for me.
I’d mos def play a Guild if I was still gigging etc Surf 🏄♂️ Liner and Polara are sweet and Bob Marley acoustic too
Fender jazzcaster by guild
Thats a great looking guitar, not so hot on the headstock or switches but it Oozes cool and I'm a Jackson player!
Sounds cool. Had a dearmond I liked but gave her away.
These are very similar to the ibanez jet kings from back in the day.
Great "dirty" segment! 🤘 Thank-you! You should play like that ALOT more often!
Salutations Austin!
This guitar seems like it must better than the price bracket it is currently in, and that it is easily worth every penny, I have seen the advertisements for this model and was astonished about the sales price.
I have to really consider getting one now.
At this price, I would not be surprised to see some of these models being modified at all, a couple of extra potentiometers would be very easy to add, along with a three-way toggle switch, I suspect we will be seeing some of these being modified in a variety of ways.
Thanks for sharing this with us all!
Please have an excellent and awesome day!
☀️✨🎸
These remind me of a Mustang or Jaguar or JagStang. I don't care for the looks of the two on/off switches. I have a few guitars that arrived with a satin finish like these. Once I played them a little it felt normal.
Just swap their necks, Austin!
😄 😉
The blue-ish one as it appears on my phone's screen appeals _more_ to me, but they're both quite nice guitars 😊👍
That is a good idea… haha
@@Trog - Yeah I'm not only a handsome face! 🤪
😄 😉
Cool , awesome , great , neato !...I like the Silvery greenish hue finish guitar , love the headstock shape , overdriven tones sound veddy noice , Ide rock that chunk of timber ! Thanks Trog !
That neck pick up should be in a silver burst aj
Now if they could just build one that sounds like their early 70's acoustics.
Maybe it was just that one but man I've never heard anything else like it.
Everybodys ears are different and to my ears it sounded horrible but for $269 its cheap enough to put some good pickups in it.
I like it I would buy one thanks, Austin
Your playing has come a long long way from a few years ago. Cheers matee
Very professional review
That looks like a compound radius fretboard. I bet it’s 10-16
I still kick myself for passing on the Guild Crossroads double neck I could have gotten for $2k! They’re crazy money today!
I like it other than those switches, they look like the power switch on a vacuum cleaner or something, just doesn’t fit a guitar.
that massive routing is NOT a feature I would appreciate...
When you plug it in, do you have to wait 3 seconds to skip?
What a great guitar for a great price! I want one. Great demo
I like it ,sounds killer distorted
Reminds me of a Music Man Stingray II from the 70s'
sadly, as much as that guitar COULD do, it wont do the one thing i wanna do, which is find a cheap platform for a floyd rose. those string holes kind of mess everything up
Holy crap! I freaking want one!!!
Aw it's so nearly a nice shape, I do like the headstock though. Less than 300 bucks looks like a deal regardless.
Guild's tag line should be "Home of the weird switches".
My name for the master volume knob is "The Suck Switch" because it makes everything suck unless you bypass it.
What of the You tube ad guitar in title?
Those labels on the Puckups look an awful lot like what came on the old Epiphones.
Sounds okif Iwant twangy Il Get My Custom Made tellie . By Forest Lee JR OUT Dixon TN . That guitar you cant go wrong . If that was in surfer Blue it would have kinda 50s vive .
I noticed that some people are getting soft cases, and others aren't Oo BTW, I ordered one after watching, thanks! =) ABSOLUTELY worth double what I paid just from what I've seen and heard.
No such sale price in Canada. All $650+
Zero “honk”. Would be great… Sitting around a campfire. When you’re done, you could toss it in.
One big ball of meh. Don’t love anything about it. String through is cool. That’s about it.
Yeah, that plus the odd switches reminds me of the first version of the Ibanez Jet King (though on that the switches worked the coil splits)
I actually like these. Very cool.
