At Cincinnati Children's, we care for the body, mind and spirit. The Pastoral Care department welcomes Clinical Pastoral Education residents to join our challenging ministry at this Level 1 trauma center, inviting you into one of the most exciting places in the country to do CPE. Using the traditional action/reflection process, experienced supervisors lead a small group of carefully chosen peers. Our goal is to equip Clinical Pastoral Education residents to provide outstanding professional spiritual care. Our program provides strong support for this level of development. Graduate residents have a high rate of board certification and employment as chaplains. Lectures focus on many topics, including ethics, pastoral care research and leadership. Residents benefit from in-depth mentoring from seasoned staff chaplains, working together to care for our most critically ill patients. You also will have a clinical setting for which you will be the sole chaplain. Service as a chaplain exposes residents to children's illness, accidental and intentional injury, and, sadly, sometimes death. Seeking to understand how the holy challenges you means staying present to your own emotional struggle and requires vulnerability. Residents bring their stories of ministry to verbatim sessions, emphasizing self-awareness, spiritual assessment and theological reflection. We encourage exploration of the spiritual issues that arise. Individual supervision provides a supervisory alliance, offering support of care, balanced with individualized feedback.
