I’m really digging your channel and content! I have always loved box turtles 🐢 and had a few as pets years back so I’m glad I found your channel 👍 your son is a hard worker I see. I used to work in landscaping for the last 25 years here in Florida. Great work on these videos!!
Do you ever worry about turtles hibernating in your wetland filters? Here in Michigan, my shallow wetland ponds freeze solid so I have to always remove animals from hibernating in them.
The ponds that have filters in some way are basically multiple ponds where as the filter is just a water reserve where pond water filters thru plants for natural filtration. Them turtles hibernate under water anyway and regularly walk in and out of both . So I don’t use the type of filter that a turtle can get stuck in .
Years ago I had my diamondbacks in a pond that had a skimmer box and they did used to get stuck in that thing so I did away with traditional filtration
These fish are incredible, they may be small but very hardy. They can get up to 2” but average one inch and they do just fine in winter . I don’t feed them until spring and they thrive .
Good question and I’m sure it would be worth a try . It definitely couldn’t hurt . Mulch like Root mulch is actually warmer inside and under it because of the reaction to breaking down organic materials . If I were you I’d look into grass clippings piles and root mulch

What is the name of the grass you call turtle grass and would it grow in east Texas.
I use a Tall Fescue Grass . I’m sure it’ll grow in your area , as it gets taller it gets soft and can easily get shin high .
Would this method work for colder climates like Nebraska/Colorado?
