Observant folk who've seen Chinese action films especially of the historic/acneint setting may have noticed a red tuft or cloth that is usually seen attached to a variety of ancient Chinese weaponry. That red tassel would be the inspiration for this tune. There are a few theories as to why the ancient Chinese would decorate their weaponry as such. Some say it's a simple decoration that just stuck for the sake of tradition. Other reasons were more practical, such as a distraction against the opponent's vision, or to absorb the excess blood that would flow down to the hands otherwise. Whatever the reason, it sure has become a symbol of ancient Chinese weaponry!

Bright eyes, a blazing soul. Armed with a spear in hand, she looked down upon the enemies with scorn as her hair fluttered in the wind. They may have an army to wage war against her nation, but she alone was enough to defeat an entire troop of soldiers. Gripping the weapon with her blistered fingers, she took a deep breath and joined the battle with no hesitation.
Pierce, slice, thrust. She was like a lioness hunting her prey, cutting down every and any soldier that dared to cross her path. Blood splattered on her face, trickling down onto her clothes and forming a path stained in red behind her. Gone were the days when she would struggle to hold the weapon for a few seconds, her body too weak to handle its weight. Gone were the days when people would mock and look down upon her for dreaming to achieve the impossible: becoming a warrior. For how can she, a young lady of a clan, dream of ever wielding something that was heavier than a hairpin?
Surrounded by killing intent, she cleared a pathway for her comrades to follow. She was a goddess of bloodlust, a mighty warrior that strikes fear into the enemies' hearts. Yet no one would know of the struggles she had endured to master the art of the spear. Outcasted, betrayed, mocked, scorned-- there were times when she wanted to give up, wrenching her hair in despair. There were times when she felt a sense of defeat so overwhelming it felt as if the whole world was against her. Yet each time she felt she could no longer stand, her body was still placing a step forward, forging her will and determination. Her hands which once resembled porcelain have now been dyed with scars and wounds as proof of her training.
The clash of metal against metal, and the shouts of battle cries echoed on the grounds. She held her stance, refusing to let anyone get past her. As the stories were passed down, all the soldiers that were present there would tell the story of a delicate-looking woman guarding the borders of the nation with all her might, igniting her courage to leave behind a trail of flames, guarding the lands she cherished.
As long as she's still standing, no one can hurt the people she loved.

*I was in awe after hearing the cover, so I went ahead and did a little search about it :D For those who are curious, this is the theme song for a character called Yun Ying in the game called Honor of Kings. The instrument used in the video is the Pipa (琵琶), and I think it really fits with Yun Ying's personality! So I decided to draw some inspiration from her character and write my own version of her story through the music :3*

*This is a story inspired by the song. I always wanted to write about a woman fighting saint similar to the likes of Wang Lin and Fang Yuan. This song and Xin Tan's story was push for me to move towards that. Hope you like it. Thank you!*
The smile of death is amazing yet terrifying, isn't it not? Laughing in the face of death, she didn't gaze at the fallible heavens or the chasmic hell but at her blood washed stygian, crimson sickle, as it was her dear lover. Her dark black attire fluttering in the icy wind shown like Yama in the face of the raging sun casting no shadow. Standing at the desolate peak of **Liushi Shan** (Kunlun Goddess), she looked down on the whole world with indifference from the towering stalwarts of Kunlun, the only woman ascetic to become the Demon Ancestor. Although she was surrounded by hundreds of righteous immortal cultivators who wanted to kill her, her laugh blew away the fighting spirit of her enemies as if they were some meagre candle flame. A young cultivator lost his courage when his enthusiasm plummeted and tried to console himself, "Is the demonic path so mighty? But anyway, no matter how powerful she is, she has faced her moment of death at last.". Legends say that hundreds of years ago, Ruan Anying in her young age chose to pursue the path of Tathāgata, but just because of her low status and gender, she was rejected by the Buddhist monks. Then she went to the many low and high ranked cultivation sects, but was further rejected, ridiculed and pushed over the cliffs like leftover because she had no talent. At that time, she swore,whether she attain nirvāṇa or not, whether she rise to become a God or Devil or not, but she would become a real Demon standing above all the gods and saints who enforce True Righteousness, being the Yama of the seven realms.
Pointing her trusty sickle, she saw through the fate of world and dissect the myriad illusions of māyā like an arahant, accusing everyone, "You righteous hypocrites are only concerned with fame, power and materials. Whoever becomes more powerful than you, you stoop to no extent to suppress them. You think that is your strength? You fear your own suppression, you fear death, loss, talent and poverty. Clinging on to love, hate, money and life, you only become the slaves of heaven. Only those of talent and future are your concern, as to how you can use them, and those without talent and potential are trampled upon by you. Are you the Primordial will to decide who is to live and how they are to live? And you dare say that you can perceive and comprehend the great Dao. With such a mentality, even if you ascend to the heaven, the heaven itself deserves to fall. Fools of the seventh Hell! I hope you suffer each and every life in the tenth hell until Kṣitigarbha herself takes pity upon you. " She spat on the ground to show her disrespect, infuriating a clan leader. But the moment he moved a step to unleash his sword, his neck was slit apart by the sickle.
Everyone was shocked at her nonchalant ruthlessness. And yet some marveled at the strength of the sickle. A farming tool which few warriors would even think of refining to a heaven defying state, generating fear and awe in everyone. Fear as innumerable souls cried in it due to being denied reincarnation and contradicted the very laws of rebirth. The saint cultivators could only watch it with slits of greed, desiring to possess it.
"Do you know the name of this sickle? This is refined by own essence and the blood of millions of hypocrites for nine hundred years. It's known as the Blood Devouring Sickle of Doom. I know you all wand to kill me because I hold this sickle which is almost a divine weapon now. With this, many of you may hope to probably trigger the celestial tribulation and then with your cultivation ascend to the divine realm. But remember that before me, none of you can even think of ascending to the divine realm. Till my will survives in the seven realms, no hypocrite would ascend to Godhood." Her words struck deafening thunder in the sky, seeming as if the nature itself supported her will.
An old sword saint cried, "That's enough evil witch! Today you will die, your demonic activities will end. Is there no justice in the world that a vile person such as you survived and refined a hellish weapon with the blood of innocents. You violate the laws of heaven and earth and we take upon the task of heaven to enforce righteousness. Being the demon how dare you stop us all. It's truth which wins at the end, you stand on the side of evil, you will never win us." An alchemist shouted, " Kill her and restore order in heavens and earth! Whoever cuts her tongue would get a Millennial life extension pill" Everyone joined in, "Kill her! Kill her!" They were all fueling with the surge to purge the evil, but at the same time, their hearts were on the rewards put upon this Demon Ancestor's head by innumerable experts while the experts eyed the Blood Devouring Sickle of Doom. What is righteousness? What is demonic? All is skewed for these people in the eyes of profit and benefits. That who stands on their path is demonic and is representative of evil. But the urge to win is not there in whom? Even the seekers of enlightenment have the urge to win, it's just that they seek to win over their own attachment and bondage.
As everyone unsheathed weapons, Ruan Anying teleported fighting valiantly each and every cultivator. But her smile had not faded despite her being overpowered, "Even if I die so what? Those who hold on to life can never comprehend the world? Only those who can let go of life and death can apprehend the great dao." The rotating sickle engaging hundreds suddenly split into afterimages, each entering the snow crystals falling from skies. This was famed technique invented by Demon Ancestor herself, Chaotic Scourge of Hell, by fusing the aura of slaughter and self-sacrifice, she could change manipulate the very laws. Each drop of snow that fell turned red as if frozen blood was raining reddening the white snowy peak. A storm rose up as it transmuted into a hurricane of blood storm with its eye as the very sickle itself. How can the Demon Ancestor witness her fall so easily when the very fate is in her hands?
The sky shook suddenly at this moment and a huge fissure opened from the void, dark blue sword emerged and transformed into a blue robed sage, pitch black flowing hair, he projected an aura of netherworld. Waving his deft hands he imprinted a tattoo adorned with multiples flames each stroke drawn by his control of the sword manifesting the truth of Primordial will :Wu Zu (Fighting Ancestor). The tattoo imposed a gigantic pressure on the whole mainland crushing the mountains. "This is not even a gifted planet in the rims of Eastern Chasms supercluster but seems like after searching for hundreds of years in countless divine realms, I have found the one capable enough to inherit my demonic legacy. Hahaha! Even if she dies, there's no problem in resurrecting her since her will is extremely strong." He stood beyond the confines of righteousness and evil, as he could observed unbiased and see through hypocrisy, with one's very heart as the sword and manifesting the order of the world. "Interesting battle! I will let her fight and witness defeat so that she can learn victory is not the truth despite her being on the demonic path."
