Thanks Nikola, always enjoy your videos, super high quality. I also have used the Pure Drive plus since 2012, have switched to the 2018 version you have and actually prefer the slightly damper feel. I need the extra .5 inches as 5ft 10 so helps with my serve in particular to get extra pop!

Hahaha!!! I was the same as you Nick! I played the Prince Graphite 110 because of Agassi (and to lesser extent Chang and Sabbatini), then played with the Donnay before he switched to Head. Never did his denim shorts with neoprene liner, but sure did the loud Nike shoes. I love Agassi so much that it was a HUGE compliment to me when you confirmed my forehand is styled like his. Success!!

I know what you mean with the hyper hammer 5.2. In HS/USTA play as a junior, a leaded up Pure Drive Roddick (10 grams lead in the throat + grip, brings it to 12.0 oz strung) just worked really well for getting the power and stability you need to control big hitters/hits.

Enjoyed hearing your journey with racquets interesting and entertaining informative as I am experimenting after deciding my older ie 2003 Babolat Pure Drive Teams needed upgrading. Have been using Pure Strike 98 16/19 not totally convinced so just bought Head Speed MP seems a bit tougher on my arm but never had issue with tennis elbow. 100 sq inc head may be better for me I remember hearing how Roger Federa’s game improved when he went to a bigger head. Also just watched your string video also really informative and interesting. Thanks for sharing your experiences much appreciated

You made me laugh out loud twice in this video. The idea of a racket having healing powers is hilarious. I had a similar thing happen but with a particular set of strings. Tried some Luxilon Banger and my arm couldn't handle it! Had to have the racket restrung after two weeks. I think it makes sense though, getting used to a certain racket. Speaking of Agassi, I played with the Head Radical for 10 years and had a hard time switching. And we know what trouble Federer had truly switching. He had them repaint old Pro Staffs for a long time! Though I think now he has switched for real and in my opinion this has extended his career.

Yeah. Head Flexpoint Radical Oversized here too, and I still use them. Only 2 points HL. Tried Babolat (can't remember the series) but it was way too HL for me. It's interesting that people have very different tastes for racquets and probably it's something good about tennis.

That was excellent racquet .I went to Mexico for vacation and my suitcase was lost in the airport . A couple days later they found it but my only 2 racquets were gone.I couldn't find the same Kennex racquet on the market so I switched to Willson Pro sraff 6.1 Stefan Edberg was playing at that time..I was playing with that particular willson for 15 years..untill I swiched to Babolat aero prodive..For me this is the best racquet just made for me.. Sometimes just for fan I try to play doubles using Willson Pro staff and even I played with this racquet for such a long time , I do not feel it the way I feel aero pro drive now..

Hi there, I used to play with Prince racquets back in the 80’s and early 90’s. The Prince Graphite and the Prince Woodie. I remember the Prince Company sent me replacement racquets free of charge when my racquets warped from leaving them in the trunk of my car. I thought that Prince was a great company especially the way that they treated their customers. It’s a shame that Prince kinda disappeared from the tennis scene. Back then many people played with Prince racquets. Thanks for listening.

I used to use a Play with a pro-Kennex, it was given to me by my coach I first started playing tennis, it was a much heavier racket, it was low power, and it was much older, it was called pro-kennex Cooper ace 90, it was an older racket from the late 80s or early 90s, and the racket was absolutely impossible to find, I couldn’t find it on eBay, I search pretty much everywhere, and eventually I had to get a new racket because the racket was so old the paint was wearing off, and I just need a switch. And even before then my dad and all my Friends, kept telling me to switch, they were like who plays with a pro-kennex.

  • @DonYang73
    @DonYang73 3 роки тому +2

Very interesting and coincidental. I think it has to do with the era that we were in. My most competitive years were as a teenager in the mid 80s to college in the early 90s. I also started out with Prince and had the Graphite as that was Michael Chang’s racket. Then, i used Donnay briefly becos Agassi did. After that i moved to a Pro Kennex Destiny whcih was arguably the first widebody racket. Also tried the Wilson Hammer but chucked it due to its over stiffness. Continued using the Pro Kennex from 1991 for the next 15 yrs until now with a “beginner” Head TiS6 and occasionally S5. 😅😂 in between, i even tried Lendl’s adidas, Beckers Puma, Edberg’s Prostaff. Just last week i tried Babolat pure drive and pure strike and played pretty fine. Maybe my next ?? 🤭 cheers

Hi Nick, thanks for this interesting racket history. I agree with your opinion about the new pure Drive plus. I played the Pure drive tour for 17 years. This racket becomes better and better since 2003. And for me the version 2015 was the best ever. The more I am dissapointed while testing the new pure drive dampened to death. The new feel is less „pure“ than ever. I hope babolat will go back to the roots of the pure drive tour (Roddick) plus.
Please let me know, what strings and which tension do you prefer on your pure drive plus 2015.

Interesting. I was playing with the Wilson ProStaff 6.1 back in the 90s, it was mean and heavy, no problem.
The first Babolat Pure Drive came out, light and stiff, at 300 grams. For the first time I started having elbow problems, and I mean serious epicondilitis. Had to stop playing for 6 months. Went back to heavier frames, pain disappeared. Ended up with the Babolat Pure Control at 320 grams, and now use the Wilson ProStaff 97 at 315 gr. No problem.

Ended here on a rabbit hole chase, it's funny I have a somewhat similar later history; although I'm an older and rec player, I switched to the wilson profile in the uh late 90s I think, and when it discontinued I soon adopted the hammer and very quickly the hammer stretch. That's 28 1/2 long. Loved the net reach and the stiffness got me cheap power especially on chip-and-charge. I used them for over 10 yrs, chased them on eba, etc. In my mid-50s it became too heavy for my melting muscle mass, and I switched to the tour plus... And for the record, confirming what Nic says here, I use a pocket radar during about a third of my serve practices, and the Babolat adds 5mph to my best serves compared to the hammer stretch. My serve isn't what it used to be, my back stiffening up got me from the 100s to the 90s, but I still think the tour plus would have been an asset even back then.

also bought a solinco tour bite soft strings for it...hopefully that will help me, after string change

Do you think Roger Federer uses the heaviest raquet (Wilson pro staff rf 97 autograph) because of his aggresive style of playing making more powerful shots and putting opponents in pressure so that he can go to the net more often? And is his type of raquet more stable on the volleys?

Pro kennex came out with many rackets, they were quite good. I remember John Fitzgerald used a pro kennex black ace and they were a great looking racket, unfortunately the cost was way above my budget

I mean if you get new grommets for the racquets and change them once you worn through especially on the sides. They should last as long as you still have grommets for them. I know they the carbon does give in to stress and soften up eventually, but it shouldn't make that much of a difference.

I used to play with the Graphite Pro Classic, still have a frame leftover even. The CTS series frames I just couldn't handle. Killed my elbow. And now 3 years later, I play with an "arm friendly" series of frames by Volkl... and my elbow hurts like never before! LOL!

I am not an advanced player but decent enough, and I was playing with the Wilson prostaff classic 6.1 for a long time. For some reason, that racquet suits me well. I feel very confident returning big serve and volleying at the net . But there is a price to pay, because it's pretty heavy. When I was younger, it wasn't a problem. Now I'm near 60 and can only play well with it for about one double set and half a single set. Then I started to feel the weight and my shots started to lose everything, power, precision, in serve as well as ground strokes and quickness at net . It still felt really good when I could strike with authority, but a tennis match is not about just a few good shots. The last time I played a bit too much and started to cramp a little after two double sets. So I need to switch racquet out of necessity now. The challenge would be to find a new lighter racquet that will give the same confidence as my current racquet. I imagine it's a common thing to switch racquet when you can no longer handle the stick you played well with in your younger days.

I don't know if I'm at the right racquet yet, but it seems like RF is good enough so I'm sticking with it, but if anyone know better let me know.

So basically a racket has a finite lifespan. Even if you’re careful, it seems like the frame takes an eventual beating from string stresses and ball shanks. How many rackets would you say you’ve tested/played with in your lifetime? Do you do your own stringing?

Amazing that you haven't redeveloped tennis elbow with the PD, Nick. I guess it shows that stiffness alone (assuming your string setups were similar) doesn't predict arm problems. I would have thought that you'd have tried a ProStaff leaded up sufficiently to match the HyperHammer's swing weight and static weight. But racquet choices are so subjective that it's a fool's errand to try and predict what racquet a given player will end up loving.

You think your Hyper Hammer was a woman's racquet? I just finished demoing the Hyper Hammer 5.3 Stretch OS and it's only like 255g. That's some breezy swinging. Would probably be great for beginners or elderly people, a bit too light for me tho.
