I remember reading somewhere that this toy had a bit of a troubled development, due to the designers not knowing Hot Rod was going to be the new leader and Rodimus was his upgraded form. According to some accounts, Hot Rod's original prototype was a lot bigger than it would eventually end up being, but they had to shrink it down to be smaller than Rodimus, which is why Hot Rod is so much more complex.
If Rodimus Prime does not transform into a Camper Van THEN IT IS ABOUT FREAKING TIME WE GOT A TRANSFORMER THAT TRANSFORMS INTO ONE! House, Camper Van and House Boat transformers are but a few things on my bucket list I want to see being turned into a Transformer.
I guess the idea of giving him a big massive gun was his trailer is offense, Magnus's was defense, and Optimus's was Support. If I were the person making the decisions back then, I would want him to be a flying car like Tracks. Having the ground guy able to fly is cool, As shown by optimus many times in the 2000's
Great review! By the time Transformers: The Movie was released, I was well rounded into the changing characters of Doctor Who. Each companion and incarnation of the Doctor brought new stories and different points of view. So when Optimus Prime was killed off in the movie, I was like, "Cool, new leader, new stories." At my school, kids were DEVASTATED! I couldn't understand why. The toys were neat, but I didn't get many of them. I just enjoyed the new stories with new heroes while all the whimps..uh other kids lamented the loss of their hero.
Little me was gifted this one night, was excited as hell for about three minutes at seeing the camper van, transformed it, and had the biggest "That's *_IT!?"_* moment of my wee life. And then I got Springer and had an even bigger one.
I just bought into this monkey comic. I don’t really read or collect comics anymore but this looks really cool and it’s for such a great cause that I had to!
I never realized how similar Kingdom Rodimus was to his original toy. And just how much better it was too. Everything wrong with this figure is basically fixed in the new Rodimus. The car is an actual car, the trailer has a ramp, the trailer has actual storage, the turret is removable to make room for a transformer in alt-mode. There's just so much more playability with Kingdom Rodimus.
Fantastic review as always, and it was a hoot to see the gremlin appear. I never had G1 Rodimus, I almost hope they rerelease him with a Pink Color Scheme like Hot Rod got as I’d jump in for that.
One thing this toy is good for is slamming at speed into a wall or other obstacle. It is so sturdy in alt-mode that it can just take it. And suddenly, I have an idea. They should have included the greatest pull-back motor and made Rodiums _specifically_ leader of the Throttlebots. There's your missing gimmick.
How funny it should be that I, a fellow Monkey Shelf-haver, also have a Rodimus! "All right" just about sums him up; he'd probably look better a head shorter and with less fussing over the spoiler, gun and--above all--those vexing blast shields. But both overcompensatory barrels of the Winnebago Winchester are great fun to wheel around!
You know, I think we have a bit of Rodimus Prime fatigue at the moment, but can you imagine a truly faithful modern version of the toy - As in no Hot-Rod car mode forced onto the robot - Then you have the opportunity for THE MOST articulated and least-restricted robot mode ever with whatever joint is possible!
@@manjackson2772 Oh you mean the Titanium one? I agree it could do with some improvements. What I meant is a version of Rodimus that splits from the trailer like the original - no Hot Rod transformation involved - while having the most unrestricted highly articulated robot mode as a result.
I bought a reissue figure from 2007 in 2016-2017, of the original Hot Rod, and.. As much as I used to hate Hot Rod as a character.. You have to admit, the designs are pretty cool. And Hot Rod has really grown on me as a character.
I had Hot Rod too, and always thought Roddy would be way better, as good asOptimus even. Now as an adult I can see that having Hot Rod was my best option and my childhood truly pretty ok
I got the trailer for this when I was a kid from a Garage Sale. I found out that the Cybertron Clocker Mode just barely almost fits into the front. So I used the Red Swerve Repaint as my Rodimus prime.
😂I absolutely 💯 love your vids but crave more! Sure you’ve heard this before but I wish you had a second channel: TRDL. Oh well, in the meantime, Thanx for all the content. 🤔Concerning RODIMUS, I personally don’t collect these relics, (I’m a relic myself, 50+yo) but I actually owned quite a few & much rather prefer all the new versions of G1. I cannot help but feels that some figure just cannot win. rodimus is one of such, and many incarnation keep bulkind gown on the wheight arguably, the Potp figure is the only one that nails the concept, as the car on it's own is just rodimus (and if we ignore the inability to sit down, a pretty good version of it), while combining with the rest is rodimus (or the evil repaint), but even then, the thing is absolutelly out of scale with everything rodimus just can't win, can he?
honestly i had no idea this guy was so stiff, i feel like as a toy he’s kind of a downgrade from hot rod. also, i already thought kingdom rodimus looked severe for no good reason, but it looks like his grumpiness goes all the way to the top.
I did meet the designer of Rodimus briefly when I interned at Tomy and we had designers from Japan visit. Maybe two minutes tops of talking which gave me the knowledge he had worked on Rodimus. Little did I know that meant he had worked on… kind of everything else…
I remember back in the day I was more hyped about the trailer then the crap figure. "Sadly," I only still have the crap figure as some ahat pal of mine had the better judgement to just steal my trailer. I mean, steal the whole damn thing if you are gunna swipe it, why are ya leaving me the figure? Rub salt in the wound why dont ya. It's peachy in full vehicle mode but that's like display choice for me, but aw my poor trailer!
Such a downgrade from Ultra Magnus! I got the reissue when they did it in the early 2000s, unlike my original it's got rubber tyres and diecast feet. Still doesn't save him from just being a bit naff.
Not as nice looking as Hot Rod and nowhere cool as Optimus Prime...the leader no-one wanted but...we needed? Did we? Naw...not really. Should have just giveb Magnus a matrix upgrade.

It’s like the original Hot Rod ate the weird Luigi mushroom from Mario maker.
Perfect
The most unrealistic thing about the toy is Hot Rod went from being a teenager to a middle aged adult and actually LOST weight.
