  • Many people shy away from grading. This discussion explains the two major different approaches to grading, and highlights resources that will aid you in expanding your grading knowledge.
Welcome to the American Numismatic Association channel! Rod Gillis, ANA Education Director, is here to demystify the art of coin grading. In this informative discussion, Rod shares invaluable tips to help both novice and seasoned collectors navigate the grading process with confidence.
Grading can be daunting for newcomers, but Rod reassures that with time and patience, anyone can learn to grade coins effectively. He emphasizes the importance of understanding grading to fully appreciate the hobby and maximize the value of one's collection.
Rod distinguishes between two types of grading: technical grading and market grading. Technical grading focuses on the state of preservation and wear of a coin, while market grading assesses factors like luster, detractions, strike strength, and eye appeal. Understanding these nuances is essential for accurately assessing a coin's grade.
Despite its importance, grading remains subjective, with professionals often differing in their assessments. Rod highlights the significance of education in mastering grading techniques. He recommends resources such as the ANA's diploma program and live classes offered at various coin shows, including the prestigious Summer Seminar.
At the Summer Seminar, collectors have the opportunity to delve into three levels of grading: Introduction to Grading, Intermediate, and Advanced Grading. By investing in learning how to grade, collectors can enhance their understanding of coins and derive greater satisfaction from their numismatic pursuits.

I have a 1989 silver bullion eagle coin that was graded a 68 by PGCS. I took it to a reputable coin dealer in business for a very long time who said it should have been graded at 70. Ever heard of that before?
