I remember the principal slapping all the pupils involved in a racial dispute in my day. He made both groups stand outside his office, during the main lunch break, and we all got a show of each of the boys receiving a hot tight slap and that was the end of it, they all got very interested in their studies after being laughed at for a few months.

Sadly, for those who cry foul over the fact 12 kids were suspended over the messages we saw are missing the point entirely. (1.) The suspension would not have been allowed to carry out if there was nothing that meets the eye. (2.) one is being naive to think that words at face value are enough. Context is important, which everyone who's commenting seems to be missing.
My advice is that inasmuch as you feel you're emotionally invested in this story it would be wise to exercise patience and see if more light could be shed on this matter in order to make an informed opinion on it.
